3 runs in 6 innings gives you a 4.50 ERA, not too good in my book. Now if a quality start was 2 runs in 6 innings then I would agree.

KaliCub re quality starts

your criticism was originally made by Moss Klein of TSN, according to the wiki for quality starts:

High ERA
An early criticism of the statistic, made by Moss Klein, writing in The Sporting News, is that a pitcher could conceivably meet the minimum requirements for a quality start and record a 4.50 ERA, seen as undesirable at the time. Bill James addressed this in his 1987 Baseball Abstract, saying the hypothetical example (a pitcher going exactly 6 innings and allowing exactly 3 runs) was extremely rare amongst starts recorded as quality starts, and that he doubted any pitchers had an ERA over 3.20 in their quality starts. This was later confirmed through computer analysis of all quality starts recorded from 1984 to 1991, which found that the average ERA in quality starts during that time period was 1.91.3

I work for the Cubs so I am really getting a kick out of a lot of these replies.

by joeschmitt on Jul 30, 2009 3:44 PM CDT reply actions

Even if 6 IP, 3 ER is the exception rather than the common case

I still don’t think a situation where the pitcher has an ERA of 4.50 should be considered quality.

Either 6 IP and 2 ER or 7 IP and 3 ER should qualify.

by madcow256 on Jul 30, 2009 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions

both of those are probably too rare

it’s not “great start” it’s just “quality”

I work for the Cubs so I am really getting a kick out of a lot of these replies.

by joeschmitt on Jul 30, 2009 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions

The point isn't that it was a great performance.

The point is that it gives the team a decent chance to win — with an average bullpen and average offense, somewhere around even odds to win. If a pitcher routinely gets quality starts he’s routinely giving his team a chance to win.

by aldimond on Jul 30, 2009 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions

But still, can't we adapt the stat to measure 2 runs in 6 innings.

And isn’t this start by Hart today going to be a quality start, and I would in no way say that Hart had a quality start today. He did his job, but not something worthy of a good stat.

Say this much for big league baseball - it is beyond question the greatest conversation piece ever invented in America. ~Bruce Catton

to see contributions from every batter in most situations.

One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.

Could be Fontenot going to Pitt.

Total speculation, of course, but the Pirates did trade away Sanchez yesterday.

atkins no longer perfect

He can throw a fastball at 87MPH and make you look like a fool. He can spray lines drives to right field. He can put up with crappy offense and take the loss. He is Randy Wells. He is the most interesting pitcher in the world. Stay healthy, my friends.

Grabow Trade

Would waiting until after the game be a sign that a player that is currently up is involved in the trade?

"Do you want a bunch of duds walking around with their shoulders slumped and having no emotions, no feelings?" Bradley said. "I don’t think the fans want that. I think they want a guy who’s going to get into the game and feel a little bit. I’ve always said, ‘I don’t really play baseball, I feel it.’ "

They would've pulled anyone involved out of the game. Pronto.

This is an interesting note from that column:

Fontenot? Would that upset people if our LSU connection got broken up?

Again, I know NOTHING. Just guessing a name that is still in the game and that is why the Cub side of the trade is not announced.

Cubs are horrible.

Teams that they beat must be worse.
Teams worse than the cubs shouldn’t even be playing MLB level ball.
Wins against teams that shouldn’t be in the MLB shouldn’t count.
No cubs wins should count.
