Cubs Recall Stevens to replace Johnson
The Score just reported during their most recent update that the Cubs will recall Stevens to take Johnson's roster spot.
Interesting, because that means they're going to keep those 40-man spots open, as I know a lot of us were considering what they'd do whether it be Fuld or a catcher-type.

So who is going to be the backup centerfielder?
Any chance we’ll try to deal for one by tomorrow? I don’t honestly see that happening and would guess we’ll just have to hope that Fukudome stays healthy, and hope that he shows at least some ability to hit lefties until Johnson is back.
Harry Caray: Marshall is going back to LA to get cocaine for his injured foot.
Steve Stone: Harry, that’s Novocaine.

thsi could signify possible trade. That is only thing I can think of.

That's what I was thinking.
I mean—there’s got to be something in the works, right? Not even Jim can have that much faith in, y’know….average outfielding prowess.

Teahen
Teahan is not in the Royal’s line-up today. Maybe a Fuld/Teahen trade is coming. The Royals are looking for a CF.

There you go.
That’s a better idea than mine. I was working to explain away the extraneous pitcher for the day.

Intriguing, or stupid
Not sure which, yet. Could mean something is in the works. Or, it means we’ll probably lose a close game in the 8th or 9th because we can’t replace Soriano in left and he plays an easy flyball off the heel of his glove.
Better hope Fukudome doesn’t foul one of his foot in the middle of a game.

You forget about Fox and Hoffpauir.
Both can play left. They can’t be worse than Soriano. Can they?
by Cubbiegoon on Jul 30, 2009 10:24 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Fox? possibly. Hoff? probably even par or slightly better than soriano.

The roster management this year continues to puzzle me
What do they need 13 pitchers for especially after yesterday’s game? So the backup OF’ers are Hoffpauir and Fox (who is also the backup catcher). Baker could be an emergency outfielder.
Hopefully they will make another move after today’s game.

Realistically...
I think they’re concerned about Hart’s ability to go long today, and we might be seeing someone disappear out of our bullpen in a trade soon?
by KDoggers on Jul 30, 2009 10:24 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think your kinda right
Though, the whole bullpen, but Atkins, got the whole day off. So if they were worried about Hart, he already had rested back up.

Well, given this new interest in Teahan
I wouldn’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility for Hendry to consider Spellcheck for Teahan. The Royals would try to stretch him out, I think.
Or maybe that’s all the energy drink.

One problem.
Spellcheck has an NTC. Would he agree to go to Kansas City?

Milton Bradley in centerfield is probably on its way
It wouldn’t stun me if he started against LHP in center. Its really hard for me to imagine Lou exposing Fukudome to a lot of starting lefties.
Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.

Just checked his career stats
I guess he has played 468 games in CF during his career. Of course most of those came early on. He’s only played in CF in 16 games since 2005 (15 in 2007, 1 this year).

I didn't realize it was that many
How did he fit those in only playing 90 games a season?
by KDoggers on Jul 30, 2009 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Here's the breakdown by year
Games played in CF:
2000 – 40
2001 – 60
2002 – 94
2003 – 93
2004 – 93
2005 – 72
2007 – 15
2009 – 1

Well there you go then.
As a bonus—he’s improved his BA 10 points over the past ten games. At that rate, he could be over .300 at the end of the season!

Fox or Hoff in left?
I’d take Hoff. At least he hustles. It’s just that his hustle is still kinda slow.
The catching situation has Lou boxed in. If you put Fox in, you are now exposed as having no back up catcher to draw upon, or make a switch. Bradley in CF makes me cringe.

I've seen him standing there.
I was so afraid a ball would get hit there and he’d trip over his super gangly legs and then our “not a LOOGY but used that way” guy would be ruined.

Whatever happened to being "out of options"??
It used to be that there was a fixed number of times a player could be shuttled back and forth between the major and minor league clubs. Once a player reached his maximum, he was “out of options” and had to either stay on the major league roster or else be granted his release.
Now it seems like there are no restrictions. The Chicago-Des Moines shuttle is is full gear. Maybe Fuld, Hart, Stevens, etc. should just rent an apartment in Moline so they can be halfway between and ready to head either direction at the drop of a hat.
Does anyone know (1) If there are any such rules anymore, and if so (2) what are they?
by perseman on Jul 30, 2009 10:42 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
From Wikipedia:
If a player is on the 40-man roster but not on the active major league roster, he is said to be on optional assignment—his organization may freely move him between the major league club and the minor league club. If a player is on the 40-man roster and not the active 25 man roster for any part of more than three seasons (in which he spent 20 or more total days of service in the minors), he is out of options and may not be assigned to the minors without first clearing waivers.
However, if a player has less than 5 years of professional experience, he may be optioned to the minors in a fourth season without being subject to waivers. If a major league player is ineligible for free agency and “has options” remaining, his team may option him to a minor league team without consequence. This is usually what is meant when players are “sent down” to the minors. Likewise, when a player on the 40-man roster is added to the active major league roster, he is “called up” to the majors.

Each option covers an entire season
meaning once a guy has his option used he can go back and forth as much as the club wants that season.

Spellcheck?
I assume that is Samardzija given the no trade clause reference. And I wouldn’t make that trade. He has a lot of value to the future of this team, and I don’t trade him and his 40 man spot for Teahan to platoon him.

We've spent a lot of money
Right now the value we’re getting is comparable to a lot of our AAA pitchers making the rookie salary (Wells, Hart, Asciano, etc). Hopefully we’ll start seeing a return on that investment in the next few years, but that remains to be seen.
by madcow256 on Jul 30, 2009 11:13 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Good grief
Jeff Samardizija is terribly overrated. He’s a middle relief pitcher at this peak. I tell ol’ Jeff to waive his no-trade clause and ship his ass out of town if it can mean we get something we need.
