ESPN reporting...

we are finalizing a deal for Grabow.

This season IS over. -BLou 6/30/09

Seems like an ok pickup

Depending on who Pittsburgh gets in return, of course.

More specifically, what’s available that would be an improvement?

Not I.

I don’t expect something for nothing.

But I also don’t buy the typical talking point that nobody is available, and even if they were available the other team wanted Zambrano, Ramirez, Vitters, and 20,000,000 dollars in return.

Why do we want Grabow?

Splits

Lefties are hitting .275 against him and he has a 1.62 WHIP. It’s a small sample size but his career numbers aren’t much better. I thought the idea of getting a lefty specialist was to, you know, use him against lefties to dominate.

Semi-Annual Bullpen revamp...

…is a Hendry trademark.

Bullpen arms are much cheaper to acquire than, say, RBis guys -and it makes you look like you’re feverishly making moves every offseason and trade deadline.

Now grab the patented utility guy who bats .265-ish with no real power and you’ve got a “busy GM.”

Won't matter to Lou

If he throws with his left hand he is a LOOGY. His value is that it frees Marshall to either start or do long relief and for Lou to stop using HIM as a LOOGY.

Why don't you look at his 07 numbers?

And Lou has said, he’s going to get another pitcher for the rotation, and it sure isn’t Grabow.

Maybe Lou misspoke

He meant to say HOLY SHIT SEAN MARSHALL can START games. Ok get me an actual LOOGY and I will try that tall kid as a starter . I mean I don’t mind giving something new a chance.

right

that was TWO YEARS AGO. he’s sucked since. and his numbers in 07 weren’t fantastic. that ERA was lower than it should’ve been based on his other numbers.

by John T. Unger on Jul 30, 2009 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Gorzy fills the rotation spot open with Lilly on the DL

Marshall is too valuable in the pen. Grabow makes the pen stronger. Gorzy also provides starting rotation option for next year given that Harden likely leaves via free agency.

Cubs will win 79 to 83 games. Season has been over for weeks. St. Louis will eventually run away with this division. And you can print it. BLou (7/21/09)

true, i probably shouldn't get worked up about this

until i see who we’re giving up. but regardless, it just seems sort of………..pointless.

by John T. Unger on Jul 30, 2009 4:31 PM CDT up reply actions

His value was when he started against the Cubs last year

And they literally drove his ERA up one run per start. It was great. I have no idea what you people see in him.
If he were a Cub Blou would be saying he was AAAA guy who we wasted a draft pick on who would never amount to anything.

yeah

but hart has done a serviceable job for a fill-in starter (better than gorzy has done the last couple of years), and moving forward, i see no reason to think that gorzy being in our rotation next season will be anything but a disaster. again, he SUCKS! look at his numbers!

by John T. Unger on Jul 30, 2009 4:29 PM CDT up reply actions

did you even look?

because Hart has been a worse pitcher than Gorz both at the major and minor league level throughout his career….

by DartmouthCubsFan on Jul 30, 2009 4:33 PM CDT up reply actions

ok, fine

i don’t care enough about kevin hart to care if he’s swapped straight up for gorzy. but if it’s certain other players we’re giving up, this seems dumb. gorzy’s had his chance to perform at the big league level and he can’t throw strikes.

Never compare Moyer to anyone

He is a freak like Maddux but a different way. It took him TEN years or so to be a good pitcher. Gorzo would be journeyman by the time
he gets good if you use that as bench marker.

Gorzelanny takes Ascanio’s place in rotation at Iowa, Marshall takes Hart’s place in the rotation, and BJ Ryan and Grabow become the left side of the bullpen.

So what happens to Marshall when Lilly comes back if Ryan doesn’t stink?

Must be tough for Hart

Win a game for a team in a the hunt for a playoff spot. Get cheered by 40,000 fans. Then you get traded to a team fighting for the lead in the race to be the worst organization in baseball. At least he avoids being demoted to the minors, as he surely would have been. He can keep his major league clock running and get out of Pittsburgh earlier now via free agency.

by Nibbles on Jul 30, 2009 8:54 PM CDT reply actions

i think the only reason any veterans ever sign with pittsburgh is

that they know they only have to play their half a season and then they can be traded to a team in a pennant chase. i dont think it would be worth it to me. but then again i would only play for the cubs, for the league minimum.
