Seems like an ok pickup
Depending on who Pittsburgh gets in return, of course.

Hmm....
I hope there’s still room to address 2B (or possibly OF).

Some live under the delusion that Chase Utley or Robinson Cano is readily available for a bag of magic beans
Cubs will win 79 to 83 games. Season has been over for weeks. St. Louis will eventually run away with this division. And you can print it. BLou (7/21/09)
Most wanted Sanchez
And reports this morning said they were after Teahen.

Not I.
I don’t expect something for nothing.
But I also don’t buy the typical talking point that nobody is available, and even if they were available the other team wanted Zambrano, Ramirez, Vitters, and 20,000,000 dollars in return.

Why do we want Grabow?
Lefties are hitting .275 against him and he has a 1.62 WHIP. It’s a small sample size but his career numbers aren’t much better. I thought the idea of getting a lefty specialist was to, you know, use him against lefties to dominate.
Yeah, I was looking overall #'s when I posted above
This should be exciting.

Semi-Annual Bullpen revamp...
…is a Hendry trademark.
Bullpen arms are much cheaper to acquire than, say, RBis guys -and it makes you look like you’re feverishly making moves every offseason and trade deadline.
Now grab the patented utility guy who bats .265-ish with no real power and you’ve got a “busy GM.”

Won't matter to Lou
If he throws with his left hand he is a LOOGY. His value is that it frees Marshall to either start or do long relief and for Lou to stop using HIM as a LOOGY.

this must be the trade al was talking about. i hope the particulars are good.
Apparently
The deal includes Gorzelanny.

That's what I think too
THe Cubs surely are parting company with an upper tier prospect at a minimum. Grabow and Gorzelanny together would not have come cheap.

My bet is
One of the middle infielders will go to replace Sanchez, probably Lee or Flaherty, and then probably one or two pitchers, mayve Mitch Atkins and Veal?

atkins or hart would be fine
but flaherty and lake aren’t ready to play short in the bigs. nate samson, junior lake, or darwin barney would be closest.
That's why
They play second. As sad as it is, I think they want Onedec at short.

gorzy can start in iowa
with grabow in the pen. ryan to join as well.
Gorzy will be the 5th starter until Ted Lilly is back
Which gives you a pen of Gregg, Marmol, Guzman, Marshall, Grabow, Heilman, Stevens

would Gorz be acquired? He is terrible. I would much rather have Hart pitching. Gorzy is complete rubbish.
Its funny, you spend most of your life gripping a baseball. And in the end, its almost always the other way around.
He's still 26
And had a great year a couple of years ago. He’s been in AAA a lot this year, and has been pitching fine there.

Well, first...
thats AAA, not the bigs. He was putrid last year. Just rancid. I see no point in trading for a guy like Gorzy when Hart will surely put up as good of numbers as Gorzy will.
Its funny, you spend most of your life gripping a baseball. And in the end, its almost always the other way around.
Gorzy has a good arm and potential
Larry Rothschild might have a nice impact. Kevin Hart is what he is. One good start should not change assessment.
Cubs will win 79 to 83 games. Season has been over for weeks. St. Louis will eventually run away with this division. And you can print it. BLou (7/21/09)
That's two good starts,
and a mountain of dog shit starts from Gorzy.
Its funny, you spend most of your life gripping a baseball. And in the end, its almost always the other way around.
its not all on gorzy
You do remember the team we got him from, right? I mean the Pirates? Christ, any pitcher pitching for the Pirates is going to have horrible numbers.
so was jamie moyer at his age
if he’s a cheap add (pleeeeze be right, al), i’m all for it
i'd guess
that ascaino is going to pittsburgh in this deal. either hart or gorzelanny will take his rotation spot with the other filling in as the 5th starter until lilly returns. seems likely that pittsburgh will get a middle infield prospect and one or two other pieces.
????
Pittsburgh will surely get a quality return for Grabow and Gorzelanny. Neal Huntington has made three great trades in a row and sure in the heck isn’t going to accept marginal garbage from the Cubs now.

yup.
onedec and a guy that doesn’t play any defense seems good for jack wilson
Jeff Clement is a good get
A risk, yes. But a lot of potential and upside, yes also. Clement can rake. He needs to play 1st base full time and be done with it.

most of the arms they've been getting
are a ways away. brian schlitter, maybe.
people may not know this about clement, but...
he is the all-time home run king in the state of Iowa.. Dude had some big-time pop at the high school level, wondering what he could do if he got regular playing time in the bigs.
get this game over with
so we can hear what the trade is.
Its hard to evaluate a trade without knowing who we are sending
I am curious who the Pirates are receiving.
"It's been my policy to view the Internet not as an 'information highway,' but as an electronic asylum filled with babbling loonies." - Mike Royko
I'm guessing
A guy like Ascanio and Darwin Barney, plus a lower level prospect or two if Gorzy is in the deal.
I am like your Dan Aykroyd and biglow would be Jane, the ignorant slut. -Chad
I'm guessing the shortstop kid Lee and something like Stevens is the return deal

i don't see why we give up lee.
adding gorzelanny isn’t worth it. (and i like gorzy long-term.)
They'll probably want a lefty

just thought about hoff myself
i’ll go hoff, cariman (AAA starter), barney or lake, and schlitter.
If they give that up for
2 months of Grabow and that heap of nothing Gorzy its a terrible deal.
Its funny, you spend most of your life gripping a baseball. And in the end, its almost always the other way around.
Grabow is an "in-demand" commodity right now and Gorzy is a lefty starter with talent
Pittsburgh isn’t going to trade those two within the division unless they get a true quality return.

Gorzy does not have talent.
He is terrible. Two months of Grabow’s productions is not worth that trade.

I'm with Blou on this

you seem interested in including lee
he’s awfully young for being a stopgap. and awfully prized to surrender for two (presently) meh lefties.
Cedeno is the stopgap
Look, I’m not advocating the inclusion of Lee. All I’m doing is stating that Lee is my guess of the primary trade bait. You ain’t going to get the in-demand Grabow AND Gorzelanny for a bunch of triple A shit ladies and gentleman. Cubs are parting company with something good.

junior lake and darwin bareny aren't
excremental
I imagine
given Gorzo’s lack of success recently at the MLB level and Grabow’s impending free agency, there won’t be anyone in the deal that we can’t live without. I wouldn’t have an issue with Hoff leaving, but Stevens seemed like the centerpeice of the DeRosa deal, so I’d be surpised if he went.
DEJESUS!!!
I don't think
They’re looking for players in their late 20’s, early 30’s and in their prime. If they were, they wouldn’t have traded McLouth, Wilson or Sanchez

The Cubs knocked him out of the major leagues!

Oh man. I feel bad for him. Kosuke and Fox ought to buy him a steak and a beer tonight.
One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.
i don't feel too bad
he’s made his money. if he wants to keep playing baseball he’ll catch on somewhere eventually.

Right, of course. But
it’s gotta be a terrible blow for his ego and his self-worth, dont’cha think?
One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.
Wow first Tavarez and now him.
We are just knocking people off now.

on the pirates board
one person floated “vitters for grabow/gorzy?”
someone responded “i’m not sure we win that deal”
It better not be Vitters

Jay
Jackson was pulled from his start
so there is one piece
On mlbtraderumors.com
4:47pm: ESPN Chicago says the Cubs sent pitchers Kevin Hart and Jose Ascanio to Pittsburgh for Grabow and Gorzelanny.
Harry Caray: Marshall is going back to LA to get cocaine for his injured foot.
Steve Stone: Harry, that’s Novocaine.

That’s fine by me.

are no longer with their teams.

I wonder the last time 2 pitchers faced each other
and immediatly after the game, both of their teams got rid of them.
(Astors released Ortiz after the game.)
Hey, it's a new century!

4:47pm: Ed Price, via Twitter, says the Cubs are also sending third baseman Josh Harrison.
"Stay thirsty my friends."
That's apparently true
He’s th only one I’ll miss, really.

Its Hart
and Ascaino
Hey BLOU- Guess you missed that one
I don't see the point of this.
Both of these guys suck. Why are we acquiring bad pitchers from last place teams?
Josh Harrison is in it too

Harrison
has had a good year thus far, but with the depth the Cubs have at 2B he was expendable.
by circuitclout on Jul 30, 2009 4:54 PM CDT up reply actions
So let's see.
Hendry turned Freddy Bynum into Kevin Hart
and didn’t he turn Jacque Jones into Ascanio?
Hey, it's a new century!
Jones for Infante, then Infante for Ascanio

Maybe we should
Stop criticizing him,

I would
If only he’d stop acquiring guys like Freddy Bynum in the first place
by Jody Jody Davis on Jul 30, 2009 4:57 PM CDT up reply actions
Yes, but he got Bynum for John Koronka.
Hey, it's a new century!

Jackson
wasn’t pulled from his start, he was demoted?
and 3B Josh Harrison.

i'll miss harrison
ascanio unneeded with bj ryan and stevens in the picture.
and hart is “a guy”
Hart could turn out to be a decent pitcher
Like you said, Ascanio really isn’t needed anymore.

So to sum up
Gorzelanny takes Ascanio’s place in rotation at Iowa, Marshall takes Hart’s place in the rotation, and BJ Ryan and Grabow become the left side of the bullpen.
So what happens to Marshall when Lilly comes back if Ryan doesn’t stink?
He stays in the rotation to replace whoever goes on the DL next
Yikes! Did I just say that?!?!

...who wouldn't be ready until 2013
at the very earliest, assuming a lot of things (he’s healthy, he can hit breaking balls, etc.)
DEJESUS!!!
Hey BLou
You can say that I was right and you were dead wrong at any time….
Must be tough for Hart
Win a game for a team in a the hunt for a playoff spot. Get cheered by 40,000 fans. Then you get traded to a team fighting for the lead in the race to be the worst organization in baseball. At least he avoids being demoted to the minors, as he surely would have been. He can keep his major league clock running and get out of Pittsburgh earlier now via free agency.
i think the only reason any veterans ever sign with pittsburgh is
that they know they only have to play their half a season and then they can be traded to a team in a pennant chase. i dont think it would be worth it to me. but then again i would only play for the cubs, for the league minimum.
dammit
i told myself not to spell there ‘their’ but i did it anyway. gahhh, i hate myself.
