Cubs add two nice Jewish boys on same day

Sorry but I can't resist. I have been thinking of this ever since Grabow's name has been in play. Tomorrow according to reliable reports Sam Fuld will rejoin the team and John Grabow will join it. Technically Sam is not Jewish since only his father is but he celebrated Hanukkah and Christmas so I give him a pass. Grabow on the other hand is one of the few Jewish players who comes from a "practicing"  and conservative Jewish family. His mom keeps kosher. I am totally non practicing myself but still proud of my heritage . Right now there are over a dozen Jewish players ( including Cub fan favorites  Ryan Braun & Jason Marquis. A few years back the Red Sox had 3 Jewish players on their roster, Kevin Youkalis, Gabe Kapler and Adam Stern and GM Theo Epstein said they were working towards a minyan ( 10 Jewish men which under the rules is what is required to hold a service).Well we could work for that. Let's see Youkalis, Ian Kinsler, Braun ( suck it up people) and we are half way there.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Close enough

I think Karros might have been been a baklava eater, but I had heard he wasn’t. Might have to go back to Harry Chappas to find the last one in a Chicago uniform.

Being Greek doesn't always mean Orthodox

There’s a Byzantine Catholic denomination that shares many similarities with the Eastern Orthodox Church, but if you had to put them on an org chart, they’d fall under the Catholic side.

I'm agreeing with you here

I’m not indignant or pissed off…if this was just a response in a thread I doubt I’d even notice much less care. But a post with some thought first saying isn’t it nice we have one religion on a team? It’s uncomfortable. I’m usually angry with people that are overly politically correct in censoring so this surprises me… but religion just is not a great idea to post about to me. My 2 cents. along with the report of JDate you have to wonder if it IS random. It may be one of those things where some ads do try to link to topics. I see it in general and sometimes it funny how off they are in just picking up one word. Some blog of outdoor folks might be discussing cubs as in the REAL baby bears and an ad for Chicago Cubs hats comes on. Most of the time these things are way off the mark.

But we’re all people with differences between us (both in the physical sense, and just as importantly in how we think). It’s what makes us interesting. but I see no humor in any of this. People are people. I only wish that mankind can look past what religion we follow, or what color our skin is. Try looking at each other regardless of what others see, but what you see. Accept all for what the person offers, not what pre-conceived thoughts that society brings.

Honestly I do not care if a ballplayer is black, white, jewish or christian or even an atheist. All I have to say is play ball.

So we can't comment if player are Cajuns, Canadians, college graduates,

etc because all of those have been the subject of posts more than a few times. This is not a religious issue. Fuld just had a nice wedding in a Catholic church. It is about the oddity of two players from a background that traditionally is not noted for athletic prowess. It is fairly similar to noting the oddity of having two Canadians and two Cajuns on one roster. Is it offensive to call Youkalis The Greek God of Walks ? . We talk about non athletic parts of players background or personality all the time.

Good questions

I do however question your comment “This is not a religious issue. Fuld just had a nice wedding in a Catholic church”. You say this is not a religious issue, but in your next breath you mention he was married in a Catholic church. Personally I do not care what religious ceramony he had. You are confusing religion with nationality and college. I think those are apples and oranges. My point is mearly we are all the same. Religion stirs up all sorts of mis-guided opinions of many. Which is a shame. Face it Jessica, many people are not nice. This post has the possibility of a forum for some to come forth with less than positive thoughts. I do applaud Al for keeping a close eye on this. Why? Because as I have stated religion for whatever reason can be a very explosive issue.

Fuld is Jewish by heritage not by religious belief

this is the point I have been trying to make re his recent wedding . I am honestly stunned that this post would generate controversy and I am sorry if it has. I know it may sound strange but I really don’t think of it is as being about religion at all but about what we tend to call ethnic background. It was meant to be lighthearted so if it really a sore point I will delete it.

You know,

You go post to post correcting spelling errors and grammar. I don’t remember seeing a grammar police on staff! You never post a opinion on baseball matters but are quick to jump on the bandwagon when you feel the poster’s opinion is incorrect.

Would this post have been made if the new player was a Christian? Heck no! So why are they so special because they are Jewish? This is exactly why these post don’t belong on a “baseball blog”. For one I get sick of these kinda things being shoved down my throat all the time. In one breathe everyone screams equality etc and the next breathe we wanna constantly give certain religions or races special recognition like this constantly! Thus making religions such as Christianity seem inferior. Like I said above if these ballplayers were Baptist or Pentecostal etc, they wouldn’t have been given special recognition.

I better stop there before I say something I shouldn’t and this is exactly why religion and politics should stay far far away from the intended subject of this blog “Chicago Cubs Baseball”

might I suggest you go to other sites? why bother reading this post if you did not find it to your liking?

Jessica was commenting on a minority not known for its athletic prowess (I am a proud member of this group!). To say that a post like this is making Christianity seem inferior is just insanity. The whole point of this point is saying how inferior we are as a minority so when two are on a team at a time, it is like lightening striking. I did not see a discussion of cloning and a mass takeover of the bench…let’s lighten up!!

To interpret this post as calling others inferior is a stretch. It was Jessica being self-effacing of her own heritage. That is the way I took it too, being of the same heritage. Let’s all have a beer at the White House, OK?

So it ok to talk about since you are a part of the minority

I think it doesn’t need to be brought up at all. If the response it has stirred up isn’t evidence enough that it doesn’t need to be a part of the discussion then I don’t know what is.

A lot of people, myself included, come here to discuss the Cubs, not who is what religion and whether they practice or not.

If this wasn't worth discussing a little

Then they wouldn’t make a Jewish Baseball Card series each year. I don’t think they have one for other religions.

People in the Jewish Community take pride when someone of their faith is part of a team. We are minorities in the field of sports so its a rarity. So as I stated before, maybe this isn’t the best place to post the comments, it’s still something important for this poster and other Jews to discuss. And perhaps, the person who posted this has nobody to talk about it with.

The first point, yea I did not mean it like that at all.

As for the second point, there are many locations around the US where there are very few Jewish people.

Plus I don’t know Doggie Stalker but he/she might not live in Illinois. Therefore this person might not have anyone to talk about the Cubs with in general. It’s not about not having friends outside of the internet, it’s about not having friends to talk about this to.

Back to the thread about Fuld

Who goes down? Hart leaves, Grabow comes aboard. I assume Atkins or Stevens goes back down? 13 pitchers is too many, but I could see Lou wanting 12 with 6 more games in 6 days on the road coming up. Then 4 in Colorado which still isn’t the most friendly place to pitch. Humidor for the balls or not.

by Nibbles on Jul 30, 2009 8:59 PM CDT reply actions

My money is on Atkins

Though personally I would not mind seeing Shark go down. If they plan to bring Gorzelanny up soon than another pitcher would go down when they do. The more interesting & difficult question is who goes down when Geo comes up ? Fonty, Hoff ?

Yes Shark should go down. Actually he shoud have never been called. The Cubs at AAA had him starting. They pull him up and walla, he sits on the pine. Put him down to learn the all important 3rd and 4th pitch.

To pitch in AAA just like he did for the Pirates ?

Hell if I know. I am kind of prejudiced by seeing two of his starts last year Vs the Cubs in which he was just horrible. Worse
than Ortiz or at least as bad. Blou also assures us that he is a good back of the rotation guy so that again makes me nervous. Ideally he could just be a LOOGY or long reliever and Marshall could start but I have a bad feeling that is not what will happen.

Braun said he really didn’t know much about Judaism. I actually remember reading an article saying that it was his grandmother who was Jewish, which makes his father Jewish, but even his father wasn’t a practicing Jew. Braun has not had a Bar Mitzvah or any other formal Jewish participation

And it’s something I would love to comment on (my family and I always get into the Jewish ball player discussion). However I agree with most that this might not be the most appropriate place to talk. I don’t really know where that would be.

Thankfully, and I’m quite shocked to be honest, there really hasn’t been anything offensive written on here in regards to fellow Jewish ball players.

Regardless, I wish our new acquisitions the best of luck and hope they will help us win in October.

Why is a player's religion allowed has a topic ???

I’m sorry, but I don’t get why we have discussion thread on the fact that Grabow is Jewish. Should I start another thread about those players who happen to be Lutheran like me?

What exactly is the point of discussing the Jewish players within the Cub organization? Are you trying to bait the anti-Semitics or something? It’s great that there are a host of Jewish ballplayers in baseball. But why are they being singled out? It is irrelevant whether a ballplayer is black, white, Jewish, Muslim, Christian, whatever.

Poltics and religion should have no place on this board.

Cubs will win 79 to 83 games. Season has been over for weeks. St. Louis will eventually run away with this division. And you can print it. BLou (7/21/09)

I agree with BLou.

So Obama is a White Sox fan, which clearly indicates that his policies need to be rethought. His comments about the police were totally out of line and for him to encourage drinking by having a beer with each party was totally uncalled for.

See Politics and Religion are both subjects that should have nothing to do in this forum. Tongue in cheeck or not, they are hot topics and unwelcomed by some.

Let’s all agree that we are here for the Cubs and we can pick apart their moves by what the players do on the field and what the GM and Skipper do behind the scenes. There is plenty there for us to disagree about.

Al is quick to shoot down political discussions and I think religion should be left out of it whether it is a cultural thing or not. And there were religious overtones in the post, I don’t care if it’s a joke or whatever. I want to talk about the Cubs and I don’t care to single out whether they are Jewish, Budhist, or whatever.

I’ve been on this site for three years, and people still don’t seem to understand they are capable of reading (or not reading) what they want. You don’t have to read the site cover-to-cover (and if you do, it’s not necessary to comment on everything).

But its his blog and he can legislate how he wants to legislate.

I will finish this post with one final comment.

We have come a long way from the days when All in the Family was the #1 show on TV. We have come a long way as in backwards as a society. Anything we are uncomfortable about has become “PC/non-PC” issues.

It is a shame that politics and religion can not be discussed freely as it was in the days of All in the Family. I personally think that keeping these conversations private just reinforces closed minds and gives us less chance to grow as a society.

The discomfort expressed in this post is such a reflection of fears that need not be so prevalent in our society. We are better than this.

My drive down to DC and back in one day was so exhausting! Thankfully I brought 3 friends with me to see the game.

Hey I meant to ask you to change the subject, the meetup.com Cubs group I just joined. What the average age of people who go to the bar to watch games? I’m 25. Am I going to be the youngest person there usually or will there be people my age?

Most people are your age

I am probably the OLDEST person there. As I have posted before I don’t reveal my age but older than Greg Maddux and younger than both Francos ( John & Julio) . Mind you all of them were still playing when I came up with that.

I’m looking into taking the train downtown to see the game tonight. I just have to wait and see if I need to come into work first (I’m unfortunately on call this weekend). Plus I also hate watching the Marlins play the Cubs so I might rather just not watch the game at all this weekend!!

I think maybe the list was a joke

hence the “sort of” . There are certainly not enough current Jewish players to make a team let alone an All Star team. I have seen lists like this that take in the entire HISTORY of baseball so Greenberg ( um Hank not Adam) Koufax, Holtzman and others make up a decent team

I just remember the joke with Eckstein

After the Cardinals won the World Series he was invited to be on the Israel or the Jewish ball club in the off season but he turned it down. When he was on Letterman, he was asked why and Eckstein said it was simple, he wasn’t Jewish.

I was wondering who that was

I think it must have been a bad joke as in the Angel Elijah who you are supposed to set out the extra place for at Passover. I think between that an Eckstein we can bet this guy is either stupid or thought he was being funny. I am surprised he does not have a picture of Solomon Torres.

Sue made an excellent point which I have made more than once. If you don’t like a topic ignore it and move on. If there is someone with a gun to your head forcing you to read things you don’t like call the police.

My sister in law is Jewish and my nephews and niece are being raised and taught about both religions. I have learned a lot especially from her Uncle who is a Rabbi and I have a natural curiousity and want my children to learn more about the religion their cousins are part of.

I happen to know several Cubs players are catholic because they happen to go to my church sometimes during the season. (I often go Sunday nights or Monday nights instead of traditional Sunday mornings because we prefer the young priest who conducts them).

Don't know how serious Grabow is

But Yom Kippur — Jewish Day of Atonement — begins at nightfall on Sunday, Sept. 27 and continues until nightfall Monday, Sept. 28.

Cubs are at San Francisco for a 3:05 p (Central) game on Sept. 27 and have an off-day Sept. 28 (barring makeups that the cubs.com schedule hasn’t listed yet)

So, in other words, this might not have any baseball effect, as far as players missing games.

By the way, I would whole-heartedly support any player taking his religion’s Holy Day — it’s not a holiday, it’s a Holy Day — off, regardless of the game.

He took a lot of heat for his decision from some in the media and some fans, but not form anyone within the organization. The heat got worse after Drysdale got knocked around in their loss in game 1.

Now that I have an excuse
Marquis ( who will play on Yom Kippur if he is needed but would prefer not to) and Brad Ausmus were both playing in a game

" I am atoning for my bad first half of the season"
I laugh every time I think about it. A quick witted Dartmouth grad who FYI came in second ( but a DISTANT second) to Maddux in
