Is that it?!?

I'm know I'm certain to draw the ire of many of you with the timing of this post, but as of now it's 4:03 and it seems the deal with the Pirates is the only deal the Cubs will make.  To which I say...

Is that It!??

Star-divide

Look at all of the other division leaders - Cards, Dodgers, Phillies, and the moves they made.  Ours looks pathetic in comparison.

I understand we have a lot of guys under-performing, but to think most of them will magically turn it around, and that others will not take their place on the slump-list, is just ridiculous.

And I'm not buying the "our hands are tied" by the ownership situation either. 101 years should mean the team should do whatever it takes to win, and anyone who needs convinced of that, should not be running the team or taking over the team in the near future.

I think it's more incompetence and lack of vision by management.  And clearly they got out-executed by the other teams' management.

Shame on you.

With the economy the way it is, you will probably see a lot more trades after the deadline, than usual.

upgrade 2B, SS, get another solid starting pitcher

in case you haven’t noticed, our SP’s are falling like flies. And don’t tell me you want Marshall or the newly acquired Gorz.. to step in.

You could make the same argument about the Phillies. Did they NEED a #1 starting pitcher? No. But they got one, it’s called going the extra mile to win a championship. Do whatever you need, and then do more.

by CalDeano on Jul 31, 2009 3:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Upgrade with who? There aren't any SS available that are an upgrade over Theriot. 2B maybe. SP are costly.

Halladay wasn’t going to happen. Most of the other SP weren’t much of an upgrade over what we have especially with Lilly coming back in a few weeks.

by thehat34 on Jul 31, 2009 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions

why the hell not put Marshall in the rotation?

He has proven to be solid in the rotation. Our pitching is fine and much better compared to anyone else in the NL Central.

Theriot isn’t going anywhere when he is continuing to produce.

What 2b would you want that is available?

I'm a lefty, maybe Lou should give me a shot for a position in the bullpen!!

by Chanman25 on Jul 31, 2009 3:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe because he has been quite effective in the pen

and they need two lefties in the pen. Leave him where he is doing a good job. Gorzelanny ( a guy who won 14 games with the lowly Pirates two years ago) fills in for Lilly and Grabow joins Marshall as the two lefties in the pen.

by Al Yellon on Aug 1, 2009 7:28 AM CDT up reply actions

With all due respect...

I understood it perfectly. Nietzsche, it was not.

The first point of the post (after some trading deadline anecdote) reminded me of our former President saying “it’s hard work”. No shit its hard work, but that’s what they get paid to do.

The main point seemed to focus on people who suggest “trading players with huge contracts for other players with huge contracts”, etc, which I didn’t do.

I don’t think expecting management of a team with the history the Cubs have to do whatever they can to win is expecting too much.

by CalDeano on Aug 1, 2009 11:14 PM CDT up reply actions

You missed my point, then.

The point is that you can’t simply package together three mediocre players and get a good one, like you can in a fantasy league. There are an enormous number of other factors.

The other teams in the division did what they felt they needed to do. So did the Cubs. The cost for Roy Halladay, both in terms of players and money, was too high for the Cubs.

It was too high for everyone, apparently. Have you noticed he’s still a Blue Jay?

Other teams needed to make those deals

and just because some other team makes a big deal does not mean you have to make one in return. The biggest boost to the Cubs in the 2nd half will be ARam’s return and the reawakening of the bats of Soriano and Bradley. If two of those guys hit per usual, that will be better than any trade would have been.

BTW, the Cubs acquisition of Grabow is impactful IMO.

I haven't.

If you read my posts over the last week or so, you’ll see I stated multiple times before the deal that the Cubs needed another starting pitcher (more than they needed another 2b) in light of Dempster’s and Lilly’s problems. Getting a LH reliever was essential, but getting another starter was almost as necessary.

Frankly, I thought we were fine before, but having Grabow in the pen will be nice, and maybe Gorzelany can do something as a starter. We improved where we could. well, we still have a couple of short-term holes to fill at C and RH CF

but those are holes that you should be able to fill from the minors, not splashy deadline deals.

Unfortunately we don’t seem to have that in our system so hopefully Soto heals quickly, Dome/Fuld hits lefties better and/or Jimbo scrapes something up via a waiver deal.

Not really sure if I care at this point

I am just talking off the top of my head without looking but what has our record been since Soto went down? Hill is no Johnny Bench offensively but he has handled his duties fine and I am almost conviced that Soto should be backing him up with the way we have been playing as of late.

That may be the baseball superstitiousness coming out and it’s more of a gut feeling right now than anything else that I have to back it up. All I’m saying is that I don’t feel that Hill is doing anything to adversely affect our chances of winning games.

by Basman on Jul 31, 2009 4:36 PM CDT up reply actions

well

I’m not disagreeing with you at all, but I really don’t think Koyie Hill has been the reason we have been really good as of late….what kept us .500 earlier in the year was the pitching….so if anything, Soto helped that cause not hurt it. The reason we have been winning is because we have been scoring runs offensively from the top of the order and the power hitters…I think adding Soto back in will only strengthen our continuously getting stronger offense. But yea, I am definitely extremely baseball superstitious too…I HATE it when Bob and Len have to bring up some stat that makes our guy look amazing just to have a no-hitter dissapear or a hot hitter strikeout.

by HardForharden on Jul 31, 2009 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

Like I said, it was based more off of a gut feeling than anything else. I also think I knid of harbor a little resentment towards Soto for coming into the season out of shape and following up his ROY campaign with a dud.

by Basman on Jul 31, 2009 4:57 PM CDT up reply actions

well, from an offensive perspective, look at it this way

if Soto can swing any kind of a decent stick (doesn’t have to be like last year – just a little pop now and then), that’s a pretty good stick to be swinging in the 7th spot in the lineup. And that means the likes of Fontenot or Baker is batting 8th. Again, not bad for the 8th spot.

Would've been nice to bring in

someone like Scutaro (and Theriot/Fontenot/Scutaro rotating between SS and 2B with Fonty at 2B exclusively) or Teahan to platoon with Fontenot, although it doesn’t look like he was actually available. I don’t really see a RH CF as that big of a deal because Fuld has shown he can thrive in his role as a spot starter. He can hold down the fort admirably until ReJo is healthy.

That being said, I’m still very pleased with the players we have now and really like the way the bullpen is shaping out. Let’s Go Cubbies!!

yeah

nothing beats those old Farrah posters. RIP.

it's not just the "new" posters...

grizzled old veteran posters are equally adept at ignoring posting guidelines and/or coming up with nonsensical comments. Also ready to pile on at a moment’s notice.

I beat this drum pretty loudly, but for one last time – a lot of the 2B options out there weren’t really going to be an upgrade on what we have, especially if you take salary into account.

and to disagree in a different way

Hendry ought to consider the future important. sure, he could have sent off major prospects for this, that and the other thing. but money aside, 2010, 2011, and the years going forward are of value as well. i’m probably guilty of overvaluing prospects. but the cardinals have done us a huge favor by gutting their future for a shot at the present. i much prefer 2010 and beyond with their system (and houston’s and milwaukee’s) worse than ours for prospect depth. pittsburgh’s is improving, cinci, about on a par with ours.

not that you care, because you have evidently forgotten (or never learned) that stupid management is a large part of why we haven’t done well in the past.

i was honestly hoping for freddy sanchez

or dan uggla (i heard he was on the market too), and i dont think we need a starting SS, theriot is just fine to me. We do need a more steady 2b, but the platoon is working out so far, so o well

he’s honest and not afraid to voice his opinion. If you actually get in a thread with him, it’s a pretty fun conversation.

sorry guys but no owner is really going to handcuff this team. and remember we are not the yankees or red sox. seeing the yanks get jerry hairston jr i guess we did,nt do too bad.

good grief

They had two serious holes to fill, lefty for the pen and another starting pitcher. They filled both needs by the deadline. As for hitters, the hitters who slumped for most of the 1st half are starting to hit. If that continues, the offense will be much improved and plenty good enough to challenge for the division. Having Soriano, ARam and Bradley back hitting per usual is better than trading for some hitter.

Let's bottom line this.

If you were expecting Hendry to do something “impactful,” you haven’t been paying attention.

Oh, and one more thing. Regarding the title of this Fanpost:

TWSS

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.
