Cleveland looking at trading Wood and Betancourt
Wood's contract is overloaded for anyone to take him. Too bad, Kerry was always a favorite.

So Kerry Wood is the new Mark DeRosa?
What’s the over-under on “We should get Wood” posts, followed by TWSS replies…? I’m thinking 7, and I’ll take the over.

Wood and Betancourt
for Miles, get it done

I might take Betancourt
That would depend on the price, however.

Why would you take Betancourt?
We have plenty of right handers.

Not very good ones, though.
Maybe we could send them Heilman in return.

Heilman
has been above decent lately. He came in today with runners on base, didn’t walk anyone, didn’t give up any runs, only gave up two hits — in his full inning in the 8th — and got out of it.

If that continues I'd be very happy.

"Only" 2 hits?
That’s not a great inning of work.

for 1.2 innings
no walks and no runs scored against one of the most potent lineups in the majors. I’ll call that a victory and walk away happy.

The no walks is the most important thing.

Closers are overrated.
I laughed when Wood got his deal. For every Mariano Rivera there are 20 Matt Capps. There is a huge gap between elite closers and everyone else.

Matt Capps is actually a pretty decent pitcher, no?
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

I think that's the point.
I would agree that closers are vastly overpaid.

OK, I'd definitely agree with that, too.

Once this makes mlbtraderumors.com
Expect 2 fanposts in the next week saying we should get him back and how we should regret not signing Wood.
Don’t worry, neither person who posts that will have looked at his numbers this year and probably will suggest Wood blew his two games to the Cubs on purpose.

a favor
if you will, to his old team.

But I expect ridiculous comments on here.

Kerry Wood is inked to an insane contract
Nobody is going to take on Wood given his dubious health, poor 2009 performance and THAT contract. Not unless the massively overrated Mark Shapiro eats contract dough or Cleveland takes on somebody else’s bad contract.

Cleveland is not trading Wood
Obviously the person who wrote this does not know baseball. He’s signed for 3 years. You’d only trade him if he was signed through the season.

Jason Stark reported it
I just passed on the news. I am not advocating we pick him up. Someone in need of a closer or has an injury could go this route, but I doubt if anyone bites as it’s way too much money.
This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).

Wood signed a two-year deal, IIRC, not three.

Didn’t mean to say you didn’t know baseball. Jason Stark really is dumb to write this obvious baloney. They won’t trade Wood unless they are giving up on 2010 as well.

Ahem... try this scenario on for size...
Despite his initial appearances, let’s say the recently acquired Chris Perez (in the DeRosa deal) starts to assert himself and develops into the power arm that he’s supposed to be. Give him the rest of this year to take his lumps and earn his stripes. It’s fairly plausible that he could be in a position to assume closer duties in 2010 – or at least co-close with some other stop-gap measure they pick up.
Then it would make perfect sense for the Indians to try and trade Wood now, get what they can for him and/or get out from under that contract, both of which could only help them in 2010 and beyond.

Hendry get's a lot of crap for his offseason...
…but we also need to remember the deals he DIDN’T make.

As it turns out, letting Wood go appears to have been the right call.
I give him credit for that. But the rest of the moves, not so much.

At this point, doesn't that go without saying?

the problem with that
is that “at this point” is right before the all-star break. There’s half the season to go, and we’re still in it. Don’t see how we can make judgment calls on most of the moves at this point. Yes, Miles has not been able to improve, and we wasted money on Vizcanio. But Heilman has, Gregg has, Bradley is on the rebound, Guzman is coming off the DL tomorrow and has pitched well, Dome is resurgent, and the farm system, which is so widely damned with faint praise around here has given us Fox, Blanco, Wells, and more.

On the bright side
Maybe Kerry Wood will go all season healthy.
That alone should be the most important accomplishment of his for the year unless he’s on a team contending for the World Series.

I hope Kerry Wood turns his season around and succeeds..
And I hope the Cubs are playing so well at the time that the BCB response is, as it should be, “Isn’t that nice.. Good for him!”.
