Our Visit to Wrigley Field

I created a fanpost on this site 3-4 months ago titled "Future Visitor" I asked for your recommendations of places to stay, visit, and dine while in Chicago. Well, time flies, and the "Future Visitor(s)" are now a "Past Visitors".

My wife, daughter, and I attended a game at Wrigley Field on Sunday, June 21 (Father's Day). It was a great game for the Cubs, beating the Indians 6-2, and with Randy Wells getting his first victory. We thoroughly loved Wrigley Field. In fact, we took a tour the next day.

I wrote up our experience in a fanpost at Halos Heaven. There are photos accompanying the fanpost, and more photos are linked in that post. I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir, but I hope you manage to keep Wrigley around for another 100 years. It's a real treasure!

Good luck to all you Cub fans for the balance of 2009!

I agree! nice post

I’ve been a cub fan since 1947, but only been to Wrigley once. It was as you say an amazing experience. I still keep pics around from that trip, during the Rhyne Sandberg, Lee Smith era.

Tough Crowd! (good editing, 'though)

Ok, so I was mixing Ryne & the nickname sometimes mis-spelled as “rhino”

Rhino

I remember when Steve Stone was doing what I assume was an on-air audition with Harry Caray at the end of a season. He innocently asked, “Harry, why do they call him ‘Rhino’?” Harry replied, “I think they just added an ‘o’ to his name, like calling Gene Tenace ‘Geno’.” You could almost hear Steve hitting himself in the forhead…

Nice post but you missed a few things in your experience

Not sure where you stayed but you should have experienced the “L” as for the ‘Elevated’ and get a piece of living history. The system built in the 1990’s in conjunction with the Columbia Exposition, the ‘Red Line’, now the busiest line transporting about 230,000 persons a day, the 4th line built in the original system.

The living history shows what major community works projects have in value. Now about 110 plus years old I am uncertain how inhospitable life would be like without public transportation.

To me the whole day thrills us as depending on what direction we come into the city, (from the north getting on the Skokie Swift to the Red Line or from the west getting on the Blue Line and then walking the tunnel to the Red Line), is part of the experience.

Then of course is the food fare and just people watching.

We did miss riding the "L".

Most likely caused by our LA passion for self-control in transportation choices.

However, last year we went to NY to visit Yankee Stadium. We rode the subway to various destinations, including Yankee Stadium. The game we attended was a Monday evening at 7:00 PM. As with our other stadium visits, we wanted to arrive early and check out as much of the stadium as possible. So we left about 4:30. We were smushed together so tightly that we later joked no one could possibly have fallen down upon a sudden stop. There was no room to move! Not sure if it’s the same with the “L”, but it’s an experience I won’t soon forget.

The food in Chicago was just friggin incredible. We ate at D’Agostino’s, Giordano’s, Harry Caray’s, Captain Morgan’s (right there at Wrigley) and some other sports bars, cafe’s, and restaurants (no national chains). We most enjoyed Wrigleyville and Linclon Park. Both are great areas to get out of the car and walk around.

People watching? Oh yes. There were more than sufficient beautiful women to give me the equivalent of eye whiplash….and sore ribs from my wife’s elbows.

what i like to call

a good day at wrigley, always involves a few beers at murphy’s watching the girls walk by.

sigh, i miss living in chicago.

It's not about money. It's about winning and getting over the hump. We've had the appetizer now, but we left the main course on the table.

Oh man...

…we ate at this Greek restaurant somewhere near downtown where there were a lot of Greek restaurants. The waitress, was so attractive. I started a conversation with her. It turned out she was from Romania. The face and voice of an angel. My goodness, if I were a younger, un-married man…she was so, so beautiful.
Oh well…it was worth the additional bruised ribs from the Missus. I thought I kept it respectful!

Man, sounds like your ribs got pretty sore!

Glad you had a good time in Chicago. C’mon back soon.

Does Soriano's defense at 2B really cost more runs than in LF? He makes a lot fewer errors in LF since misplays and mental mistakes aren't figured into the stats, but I have to imagine that his mistakes are more physical at 2B. Any thoughts? Is there a statistic on this?
