Wow, I didn't think Jason Marquis would be leading the lead in wins, but I would imagine that even if he was still here, our record would be very similar seeing as we've had excellent starting pitching, but until recently, poor run scoring.

Marquis wouldn't be 11-5 as a Cub, even if he had pitched that well.

The Rockies are averaging 5.3 runs per Marquis start, and that includes last night’s one run.

Note that the Rox

are letting Jason pitch past the 6th inning.

He's getting more ground balls there than he did at Wrigley, so...

… his pitch counts are probably down.

Jason was pulled with pitch-counts

in the 80s, regularly last year – 9 xs, plus one 78-pitch outing. He was in the 90s another 9 xs. Lou just didn’t trust Jason.

Jason pitched CG as a Cub

He only got pulled because he got himself in trouble during games.

And I was there!

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

But I will say

I feel like Cubs have pitched significantly less CG in the last 4-5 years than any other team.

It certainly does seem that way.

117.1 IP, 3.61 ERA, 1.30 WHIP

To go along with his record. I’m glad to see him doing well. I defended him so much over the last two years here on BCB. He got way too much crap because he wasn’t as good as the other four pitchers.

Agreed

Although with Marquis gone Wells got his shot and is making the most of it.

Marquis isn't a bad pitcher

He’s got a career 98 ERA+. It’s not spectacular, but he is pitching to the situation he is in. Marquis’ GB/FB is at 1.34 so far this season. I don’t expect him to maintain that level, but he could possibly set a career high there. He’s also got a 2.19 GO/AO ratio, which is a good ratio to have if you call Coors Field your home ballpark. His ERA is down from last season, but could climb over the course of the season. He’s getting the job done, which is what matters.

And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.

He's always been quick out of the gates

and then fades severely in the second half. There’s a reason he has been left off of post season rosters in both Chicago and St. Louis.

Keep in mind

That’s at an extreme hitters park too.

WAS an extreme hitters park.

Not as much anymore.

I still can't quite bring myself to say...

…that I’m sorry he’s gone. But I’m happy for him – and I think it’s fantastic redemption that he’ll get to pitch in the All-Star Game in St. Louis.

Yeah the STL fans will treat him well I think.

But as madcow says above, without Marquis gone, Wells is hanging out at the High Life Lounge in downtown Des Moines.

Clearly, we're not hurting for starting pitching ...

But it’s too bad we got nothing for Marquis. Even if Milton continues to improve, Hendry really had a bad offseason.

How was the game yesterday?

Did you get a good luck at Pink Hat Guy?

I didn't see the pink hat guy

But the game was great! I was in section 121, the Cubs won and it was cool to see Ramirez back.

It was a nice night. Thanks for asking!
