BCB Mobile Commenting Premieres Today!

You asked for it -- now it's live. Here's the official announcement re: SBN mobile commenting. Here are the key details:

There are two things to note in this release of mobile commenting. First, mobile login is not network wide. You must sign into each community individually. Second, we did some cross browser testing with as many phones as possible, but we cannot test each phone. If you have any issues with mobile commenting please let us know at support@sbnation.com or using the contact form at the bottom of each page in the network. Please be sure to provide your phone model and browser type along with a very detailed description of the problem in your email.

I know this will keep a lot of you who use iPhones or other mobile devices much of the day in touch with BCB. Let us know how it goes.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

First....

To post with this feature. Very cool. It works like a charm with my iPhone.

Looks good!

Note that it says “via mobile” next to your post.

YSWYDT?

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

Excellent

I like the “via mobile” addition and it’s not in the way of the post or anything. Not sure if you had anything to do with the whole deal but thanks Al!

Takes quite a bit longer to load

Almost unusable unless you have a fast data connection and great mobile browser

I haven't had too much trouble with the iPhone and 3G.

Unless it’s a post game wrap up thread. I learned quickly to not even bother.

Awesome!

This is the best invention since sliced bread! I’ve been hoping this would be a reality so I’m glad it’s finally here. This is going to save me from falling asleep in the majority of my classes haha

Any idea if we'll get fanshots on the mobile site?

Obviously videos would be difficult, but it would be nice to see the comments in addition to links and photos.

The mobile site gets me through my 8:30a meeting every day . . .

by madcow256 on Jul 7, 2009 10:45 AM CDT reply actions

Will do, thanks.

Wasn’t sure if you were privy to any of their plans.

thanks SBN

now if I can find a way to post and listen to wgn radio at the same time.

I'm still having problems accessing the mobile version of the site.

Let me begin by saying that I did contact the SBN support guys about this back in April. They didn’t reply back to me until last month (which isn’t a huge deal), at which time they said they were still working on my problem. Anyway, here’s what I’m encountering:

I entered " mobile.bleedcubbieblue.com" as a favorite on my mobile phone and, when I click on that link, it appears to take me to the regular version of BCB. That is, I get a huge log-in screen and the huge BCB logo and then my phone freezes up until it finally gives me a: “Insufficient memory for this operation” error message.

Oddly enough, sometimes (about once every 10 tries or so) the link seems to work and the mobile-friendly page shows up. But when I try to view comments or one of the Fanposts, the site again takes me to the regular version of BCB with the huge log-in screen and massive BCB logo and the error message. I just tried it again and the regular version of BCB showed up – with the "insufficient memory" error message.

I’ll follow up with the support guys again, but is anyone else having this problem?

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

What kind of phone?

"Pounding sand since 1982...."

by cubswynn on Jul 7, 2009 10:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Oh, right.

I have an account with Verizon and am using a Motorola Razor phone with an Openwave 6.2.3 browser.

by daver on Jul 7, 2009 10:57 AM CDT up reply actions

daver, this is an unusual problem

Sorry about this. Send in a support request and we’ll try to reproduce and see what we can do for you.

Any conclusions you can draw about when or how your getting through 1/10th of the time would really be helpful. We’re trying to figure out how best to test across the gazillions of browser / phone OS permutations.

Thanks - I'll forward along the e-mail thread of the support I've received thus far.

I may just have to wait until my wife and I upgrade our phones later this year.

Have you tried accessing the site without the 'mobile' bit?

If you just go to bleedcubbieblue.com, the site appears to do a browser check and then spits you over to one of the sites based on what the browser tells it.

Might be worth a try.

OK, I tried that...

…and it did take me to a much more “readable” version of the site. But I had to scroll through five or six “pages” of stuff (basically the bars along each side of the home page) to get to Al’s main post, and I still wasn’t able to post comments. I got an error message along the lines of “Unsupportable content type” when I tried to post one.

Sounds like it still didn't put you in the right spot

Hopefully, the SBN tech guys can figure it out for you – since they’ve just debuted this new feature, maybe they’ll be more inclined to look into it now than they would have been at other times.

Yeah, thanks for your effort.

I’m a little surprised my phone doesn’t work because I’m on a pretty common carrier (Verizon) and it’s a pretty common type of phone (Motorola RZR). Maybe it’s me.

You should send this to support@sbnation.com

… so they can find a way to test it on the Rant.

If you can download software to your Rant, download Opera Mini — that browser has been tested and works.
