The "Alternate" Blue Jerseys spread like Crabgrass

I have weighed in on this topic before, but it has been a couple of years, so forgive me Al, here I go again:

I start with my conclusion: The so-called "alternate" blueberry jerseys are more appropriate to a Pony League team in Winnetka than the Cubs.

Ever since the John McDonough (he of blessed memory) imposed "no Blue Jerseys" edict was removed upon his departure to the Black Hawks, the wearing of the Blues has become the exception, not the rule, both at home and the road. Apparently, the decision is left up to the starting pitcher. Zambrano and Harden always wear blue, Dempster and Lilly wear whites/grays. Wells has worn both, but has lately shown a weakness for the blueberry. In the most recent homestand, its been 60% blues and 40% whites.

My theory is that as players come up through the minors, the jerseys worn by the Helena Hushpuppies or the West Covina Watermelons tend be garish, befitting the carnival-like atmosphere most minor league franchises try to construct. So when they arrive in the bigs, the players tend to opt for the Technicolor look familiar to them from college and/or minor league days.

I'm sorry, but Wrigley Field is different...it is the high cathedral of baseball. Wearing the clownish blue jerseys, with the oversized, cartoonish cub ensignia, is like attending mass at St. Peter's basilica in a Hawaiian shirt and flip-flops.

One of the greatest things about the environment at Wrigley Field is that it is mercifully free of the sausage race shtick and the constant between-innings sensual bombardment from the outfield big screen that almost every other franchise features. Wrigley is different--it offers a little more traditional, baseball-centered experience. The Cubs, particularly at home, should look like a traditional team and not a five year old expansion franchise--more like the Yankees, Cardinals and Dodgers, and less like the Rockies and D-Backs

My personal preference would be to reimpose the "McDonough Rule". But, at least, the Cubs should exclusively wear the classic white pinstripes at home, and mix and match the blues with the grays on the road. The blues are advertised as "alternate" jerseys.....they should remain as the exception, and not the rule.

i like your points but i disagree

I actually like the blues, but I do agree that they are worn too much. Once per series is the limit I would set. Where I also disagree is the so-called lack of stupid games on the scoreboard. I was at 3 of the Brewers games: between the paint the scoreboard race, the puck shuffle, and another shell game race – that’s just not true that they don’t do that at Wrigley.

Make it happen baby: Cubs, Jaguars, FSU, Jazz, Thrashers.

Never Wear Blues At Home

The Cubs should never wear the blue uniforms at home. I like the blue uniforms myself, but they belong on the road for half of those games. I’d like to see the whites for the 81 home games, the grays for 41 of the road games, and the blues for 40 of the road games.

While I would prefer they never wear the blues

only wearing them on the road would be tolerable, but there should be a constitutional amendment banning them at home.

I prefer the whites...

but I could care less if they wore tin foil uniforms as long as they win. They may feel a little different to some pitchers and as long as they are comfortable I’m fine.

Its funny, you spend most of your life gripping a baseball. And in the end, its almost always the other way around.

+1

As long as their winning, do we really care that much? If the players are more comfortable in blues or whatever their preference is, and they have success in them, then GO FOR IT

Well, I think jersey colors is a reasonable thing to care about.

Have you seen the old Oakland jerseys of the 1970s? How can anyone be a fan of a team that looks clownish? I agree that pinstripes has that elegant, classical look.

Hands down the worst uniform of all time

Shorts?!?!?! It is not easy to beat out the Padres Taco Bell unis and the Astros’ rainbow jobs. The Giants had some pretty hideous halloween orange jerseys in the 70s. And lest we forget, the Cubs road unis for much of the 70s, those lovely light blue numbers with the white pinstripes. I guess the pinstripes were supposed to make the whale look slimmer?

Here's one that was worse.

The all-maroon version in the middle was worn for exactly one game. After that game the players all voted to refuse to wear it again and management had to eliminate it. Smart move, IMO.

You mean the 70s Oakland teams

That won 6 division champs and 3 world series?

Who cares what they wear, as long as they win.

I think part of this camp that prefers ‘tradition & class’ may also attend a number of games each year and even live in the greater chicagoland or in close proximity. You have come to love and enjoy that when you go to Wrigley you can trust in the product that is being delivered…whether its the bleachers, ivy, etc.

I live in FL and attend 1 game a year either at Wrigley or in ATL, and consequently I could care less if they wore pink zubaz unis, as long as they bring home a WS.

I’d like to think deep down all cub fans share that view, but I understand why some prefer the classic look

it was the disco era, so the various colored jerseys fit right in, right along with the white shoes, moustaches and the long hair.

Seriously though, how could you not be a fan on some level of those A’s teams, three straight World Series titles, and there would have been more if Finley didn’t break the team up.

I respect your opinion, Al

… but I think “tradition” is often used to prevent changes that can make things better. I’m a fan of the wild card, the 1990s realignment and (for the most part) interleague play — all things that broke from the traditionalist mode.

Granted, uniforms are far less significant than the things I just mentioned. But I think changes should be judged on their merits and not rejected because they’re new and/or different.

But, Al — why can’t the blue tops be the same shade of blue as the hats? Is there a story behind that?

Blue is a nutroriously hard color to match...

and when you consider that they use two different manufacturers and two different fabrics, it’s almost impossible to get it done exactly right.

You also see that problem a lot on football uniforms. The blues old Giants unis were ridiculously off, and same for the Cowboys. Sure one’s plastic, and one’s cloth, but the same hurdles are in place.

Have the Cubs’ uniforms and logos stayed the same since the team was originally created? If so you may have an argument. But otherwise it feels like the tradition argument picks a year of uniforms it likes and goes from there.

I am absolutely out of this thread after this

I am not calling people out if they “say even the slightest wrong thing about any Cubs player”.

I’m saying that Zambrano is NOT coddled, and does NOT get everything he wants, and it’s ridiculous to suggest that the only reason why the team wears these jerseys is because of him.

Furthermore, of all the things to complain about, this has to rank down around the level of “do they use a stretchy belt or a not-stretchy belt”. The lack of actual stirrup socks probably ranks higher than the alt-jersey color.

As far as Clutche goes, well. Just because we’re not supposed to talk about it, I remember his debt.

I won’t reply to anything else in this thread.

Personally I like the blues

its my opinion and nothing more. The gray I was not a fan of, until I got one and saw it up close, then I liked it more. Home jersey, I wish they would get rid the name on the back again, I liked the old style of look without the names.

no reason to be ashamed of it.

it is interesting how some canot stand the blues. I had more of a problem when they started wearing them with the C and walking cub instead of the traditional CUBS logo. But that has grown on me as well.

LSA!

Grey on the road and stripes at home.

If a “3rd jersey” is really required, restrict it to batting practice only. Oops, forgot, we already have a 4TH JERSEY to cover that. Ridiculous……

The blue softball jerseys suck

I hate those things with a passion. They are something that should be strictly reserved for spring training games or for your local 16 inch beer league team to wear.

my 2 cents

LOVE the blues! HATE the pinnies (a pandering tip o’ the hat to the desxzpicable ny skankmees)

LOVE the road gr(e)ays!

my thoughts: let’s drop the pinstripe pajamas; get a nice white or off-white home set, mix it up w/ the blues & the battleship grays on the road!!!!!!!!!

ps is it grEy or grAy??

I'm a tad confused.

I must not be as savvy about these things as most baseball fans; why do solid color jerseys come off as smacking of amateur softball leagues? I’ve never had that reaction to them, or heard other fans get upset about them before I read this post.

Anyway, I have to say I like the blue jerseys just fine. I know it’s silly, but I have never been overly fond of the pinstripes on the home unis because of the strong association of pinstripes with the Yankees, who I despise, so I’d rather see the blue jerseys. But that’s just me. Have we always had pinstripes on the home whites, anyway?

by owllover711 on Jul 8, 2009 12:52 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree

I don’t understand why they’re considered “softball” or anything. I think they look really nice. I like the color a lot.

I’ve seen people call baseball “classy” but when they’re out there chewing tobacco, spitting on the field, adjusting their crotches, arguing constantly (see other posts that say this is part of the game), what’s classy about that?

by Arbusto on Jul 8, 2009 7:38 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Some (like me) say that

because before colored jerseys became commonplace in the major leagues (the Oakland A’s started the trend in the late 60s with gold jerseys and pants with green/white trim), every team wore white at home and gray on the road, no one wore colored jerseys … no one. However, across the nation, softball teams commonly had worn colored jerseys and pants al the way back in the 1940s. I have a photo of my Dad’s 16 inch softball team (Foxhead 400 Beer was the sponsor) and they jersey and pants were maroon. So when major league teams started to wear colors other than white or gray, many remarked how they looked like softball teams.

not only is the blue pathetic

yea I hate these alternate colored jerseys teams wear these days. What really sucks on the Cubs home white is that stupid C circle registered trademark that the Cubs will appearently forever have unless the new owner does something. The Cubs uniforms are not classic like the yankees and should of been replaced years ago

Not classic? How exactly do you define classic then?

The Cubs have worn a variation of the C logo for over 100 years, as long as the Yankees have had their pinstripes and their NY logo.

Like this one.

That’s the one from exactly 100 years ago — 1909. In the current colors, I’d love to see this return for road uniforms — I like the vertical “CHICAGO” on the road jersey

And further...

… the Yankees’ pinstripes and interlocking “NY” logo dates only to 1915, and the “NY” didn’t appear permanently on the home jersey until 1936.

Excellent post

The blue jerseys should never be worn other than during batting practice and maybe spring training games. For the season, wear the pinstripes at home and the grays on the road, but I am terminally old school about such things. I hate the names on the back of the home jerseys, too.

I dont like them at home

They should wear strictly whites at home. I don’t mind the blues on the road. I liked the late 90’s blues with “Cubs” across the front more, as well as the road jerseys that said that as well. I also wish they could take the crawling bear logo off the blues and replace it with the normal Cubs logo like the home jerseys. The crawling bear is an alternate logo, and should be on a sleeve only.

I got a great idea

why not make the uniforms cotton? That polyester has to get uncomfortable out there in the heat. If the players are more comfortable they are sure to play better.

Sundays

How about wearing the blue “softball” shirts on Sundays only? For me, I love the classic Cub pinstripes and think the blue tops are hideous.

But what do i know? i loved the orange and yellow Astros shirts fromt he ’70’s.

I personally

like the navy spring training unis (before they changed to the ones that look like all-star game unis) better than the royal blue alternate ones. I understand that navy isn’t one of the Cubs colors, but I just like it better, so if they are going to go away from the pinstrip/grey palette, I’d just assume they go there.
