MEMO TO HENDRY: Pirates "Pushing Hard" To Trade Sanchez

The Pirates are "pushing hard" to trade All-Star second baseman Freddy Sanchez, according to a National League executive this morning.

The San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies are two of the teams with which the Pirates have spoken, the source said, but there are as many as four or five more.

I really hope Jim Hendry is all over this...trade them Fontenot, some cash and Guzman...done deal?

After all...this is the cash strapped Pirates our personal trade partner 3x over.  Does the Baker signing make this moot?

why not?

You have to give up something to get something like Sanchez…AAAA Fontenot isn’t going to cut it.

I am not sure....however...

It is 10x easier to replace a bullpen piece then a upper-tier NL 2nd baseman. Just my opinion.

Or are defense and hitting? I’m guessing the hitting….we need more hits, more speed, more defense….

I understand

But that is someone I would not want to give up. I personally dont think a bat is needed. We have the bats, they just are not hitting. Career numbers of most off this team shows that they are under producing. I dont know what they need to get a spark and start hitting, but I think the offense will come around.

agreed

I like what Huntington has done there overall. Seems like he has a real solid vision of what he wants to do to rebuild the team and is willing to do what it takes to get there. They’ve also shown willingness to spend for the right situation (forking over money for Pedro Alvarez – although right now, that looks like a bad decision).
____________________________

The Rockies rumors on Freddy suggested EY Jr. as a piece. I imagine they’ll do their usual and target a quality young talent and maybe a ready piece to step in. In terms of talent, could we land Freddy Sanchez? Sure. I imagine they’d ask for a high upside kid to go with a ready talent, which would make me say no to it. For example, I could see them asking for say, Ryan Flaherty and a pen arm (let’s say Kevin Hart for the heck of it right now). I would not fork over Angel Guzman for Freddy Sanchez – it’s just not worth it to our pen right now, and pen assets are much costlier at the deadline. I wouldn’t fork over any of our top 8 or so prospects (such as a guy like Starlin Castro). I’m not even sure I’d go for a Flaherty/Hart deal.

Is it a move we can make? That’s a big question that seems to have been skimmed over in the comments ahead. He has around 3 million left on his deal this year (and 600 grand buyout next year – can’t see anyone giving him that 8 mil club option), meaning that a move for Freddy Sanchez might be out of our budget, or it would push us to the end of our budget, which brings us to

Is it a move that we have to make? Eh. I’m not sure on that. The power’s come out of nowhere this year, and he’s had a smidge of luck on his side. There’s a perfectly good chance that he regresses a bit the 2nd half. If the cost in talent is low, then fine, you take the swim if you want to. If not, I’m fine with letting Jeff Baker and Mike Fontenot play (assuming Baker will actually get some regular AB’s).

He has a really good reputation defensively.

that Sanchez is overachieving a lot, and that Fontenot has had some bad luck, but at the end of the day, value is based on production. Furthermore, Huntington is building his core for 2011 or 2012, and Fontenot likely wouldn’t be a critical piece in that endeavor.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/07/rockies-interested-in-freddy-sanchez.html

The pirates want prospects and I don’t think it would take TOP level like Vittters to get him. Sanchez has an $8million option for next year about to kick in. Maybe its time to use some of those pitchers we got in the Derosa deal as trade bait. Throw in Fontenot if you have to, he is cheap and under team control for a few more years. Personally I would rather keep font because he is a GOOD bench guy and let Baker go. BUT YES, lets hope Hendry is ALL OVER going after SANCHEZ….316, .355 ob, 33rbi…would look lnice in the number 2 hole.

But they posted a “rumor” about a Bradley for Ordonez shop the other night.

Cubs are trade candidates for A-Rod in 2006 offseason at one point lol.

Yes Guzman

Reluctantly, I would trade Guzman for Sanchez. It leaves the bullpen shorthanded until they can put Hart back in the bullpen. Guzman has been out on the DL too much. That’s what sways my thinking in addition to what Sanchez can ideally offer. I don’t think they would have to include Fontenot or any other player. But they could relieve themselves of one of the 2nd basemen through another trade to get the overflow of offensively challenged 2nd basemen off the roster.

I'm warming to the idea...

And I guess to address the comments made by others here, I think Guzman is too much, and probably a bit too important for the Cubs to let go this season.

Honestly, I would probably try dangling Fox and Ascanio before anything else, but that’s just my opinion.

It's fun to speculate, I guess but...

…from what I’ve been reading, the Cubs’ payroll is essentially frozen right now and so, unfortunately, adding a contract like Sanchez’s (even if we did/do have the chips to deal) seems pretty much impossible.

But, for what it’s worth, I’d be VERY tempted to add Guzman to a package to get him.

+1 for the first part

Sorry didn’t see your post until now. Sanchez’s 3-4 million remaining might be too much, or it might push us to the edge and not allow us to make other moves.

I wouldn’t part with Guzman though. Pen arms are costly at the deadline.

I had to look. With another streaky

bat second baseman on the market making good coin, I had to verify he was less than 6 feet tall.

At 5’11", Freddy fits the Hendry bill. Is he better than either Fontenot or Baker? Probably. Is he worth acquiring? Probably not.

if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand

Interesting...

Was watching the cards/brewers game and it was interesting to hear the Cards Announcers bagging on the Cardinals hitters because they are a station to station team with a bunch of singles hitters and only one homerun hitter, obviously Albert. I mainly watch Cubs games and rarely get time to sit and watch another team, but I have always classified a Larussa team as a true national league team, advancing runners, stealing bases, etc…

Other point, Sanchez would be a nice fit, I WOULD trade Guzman (not untouchable) and keep Fontenot on the bench. Maybe Baker can go with Guzman in the deal.

Sorry for another post

Its being speculated that the ROCKIES want Sanchez. Why would they trade one of their top prospects Eric Young, Jr for Sanchez. EYJ is a solid young 2b and I would rather hang on to him. Plus, Clint Barmes and Ian Stewart have been playing second there.

Hey, Hey! Hey, Hey! Hey, Hey!

by TheCubsGuy on Jul 9, 2009 3:29 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

because...

the Rockies find themselves battling it out for a wild card spot. Although everybody predicted the NL West as a weak division, the Giants and Rockies have been playing much better than expected. Colorado is 11-4 in interleague play, while the Giants are boasting a record of 12-8 against their division. I think with weak teams like the diamondbacks and the padres in the NL West, the Giants and Rockies both have a decent chance at capturing a wild card spot. The NL East is a tough division, and so far, the NL Central has been close. Look for the possibility of 2 NL East teams in the playoffs.

I don't get their interest either

BArmes has been alright this year. For the right price, sure, you make the deal. But giving up EY Jr. makes little sense for them, imo, when they have other needs to address.

Go get him Jim

I think it could be a big boost to the team

You'd have to send the Pirates a contract...

… worth about what Sanchez’s is, to make up the difference. The only tradeable part who has such a deal is Rich Harden.

I’m not saying the Cubs could or should make that deal. But there’s no way they’re taking on Sanchez’s deal without getting rid of one.

That said, I’d love to have him.

seriously, the pirates have

2 middle infielders within two years of the bigs. one is sanchez, the other is jack wilson, who is also on the block. while pitching is king, i would think pittsburgh would like a guy that they can plug in for a few years at both positions.

i don’t think “blanco and fontenot” would do it. i would imagine pittsburgh wants two of a/ legit pitching option (more guzman than ascanio), b/ a true shortsop option for 2010 and beyond (darwin barney?) or c/ a true second base option for 2010 (fontenot or blanco could fit here, maybe. though they’d prefer tony thomas, i’d guess)

Not going to happen

Hendry has already maxed out his credit cards at $136 million. Unless he can move salary there is no chance Freddy Sanchez is an option. Hence why the Giants and Rockies are mentioned as the serious pursuees.

$136 million payroll for a .500 style ballclub. Good work Jim.

Agree...

…I would doubt you see anything more than a bullpen piece added before the deadline. Anything is possible, but it’s not likely.

It would be one thing if most of the star players had been playing to their potential in the 1st half, but that is not the case. The Cub’s improvement needs to come from certain core players performing like they have in the past.

I agree

Baker has helped balance the bench, while adding Fontenot insurance. The Cubs may try and add a bullpen piece – especially a LH one, but I’m not expecting a big deal. Hendry will keep working the phones and see if a bargain is out there, but I don’t think it’s even the financial constraints so much as it is that Hendry expects his players to play up to their levels.

that makes no sense at all

we would effectively have no bullpen

awesome idea

then we should shut down ARam right after, so he can rest and be healthy next season also

A closer

they don’t need, who will pitch for two months then be a FA, and a set-up guy with control issues, can’t see how the Pirates wouldn’t jump at that. Get it done Jim!
