Hart sent back to Iowa

The Cubs optioned right-handed pitcher Kevin Hart to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday, and they will make a corresponding roster move prior to Friday's home game against the Cardinals.

http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090709&content_id=5785610&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc

In my mind they wouldn't make this move unless something is going on. They need Hart to start again after the All-Star break for Dempster and he will now not be able to come up from Iowa for 10 days. Unless they plan on going to a 4 man rotation for a little bit after the All-Star break but, this gives me a feeling that something is going to happen in the way of a trade or a Signing.

Peavy!

I was hoping Halladay

Onley said they were interested and may have the package that could get it done.

by oeosoto on Jul 9, 2009 2:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Is there a link for that?

Peavy was a joke BTW.

Got it but

that didn’t seem too promising. I would love the Doc here. I tell you what, if the Brewers get him, a la CC Sabathia…I will be PISSED!

I dont think we have the goods for Doc

nor the need really, hes great sure, but like Peavy, how much would you give up for a luxury?

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

I won't if it costs them a bunch of prospects and the Cubs finish first, anyway

I suppose but

I have always thought that prospects can be overrated. Had Hendry explored trading Pie sooner, we could have had better. I love the “idea” of homegrown prospects but given the Cubs track record, I fear that we are simply protecting something that will ultimately let us down. My true fear is that the coaching system in this organization is weak and this is why our “prospects” often go elsewhere and succeed.

A shame really.

I fear for the likes of Josh Vitters. IMO, if we can get an arm like Doc and lock him up, it’s worht it.

Don’t think the Jays would, though.

Well....

Casey Fossum, JR Mathes, and James Russell are lefties at Iowa. Mathes, I believe, is injured or coming off an injury.

Lord I hope they don’t call up Fossum for a start. Russell’s numbers look pretty decent at Iowa.

by jesus christos on Jul 9, 2009 3:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Aaaaaand optioned to Iowa.

I wonder whether they’ll ever clarify exactly why Waddell was DL’d in the first place.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

by daver on Jul 9, 2009 3:16 PM CDT up reply actions

No

We won’t find out. HIPPA. Federal Law greatly limits what can be released about an employee. In fact, I wonder why we hear as much about player’s injuries as we do.

That's a good point.

I guess it’s none of our business really. Still, it’s hard not to be curious.

Article also says

that Waddell is getting sent back down, but that the team isn’t going to call anyone up to take his place. Brilliant. The most important series of the year is coming up, and the Cubs decided to go with a 24 man roster.

by TarHeelHawk on Jul 9, 2009 2:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Waddell is on the DL

He isn’t on the 25 man roster right now, so a demotion will keep the roster at 25 men (sans the resting Soto).

by Qixotl on Jul 9, 2009 2:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Good

I’m happy he gets his chance, he’s been doing great in Iowa.

Has anyone

heard anything definitive on Soto? I just read on Sun Times that he may be available in late inning situations defensively.

Its funny, you spend most of your life gripping a baseball. And in the end, its almost always the other way around.

by TCobb1911 on Jul 9, 2009 2:54 PM CDT reply actions

Makes sense...

with that sort of injury, I’m guessing he’ll eventually be put on the DL (retroactive to the last time he played). But given how well he was hitting before the injury, they don’t want to force him to the DL unnecessarily. This way, they can wait and see if he’s ready to go after the break.

by SouthernCub on Jul 9, 2009 3:31 PM CDT up reply actions

But Gordo

says he could be available to play potentially late in games.

@cst_cubs: Jeff Stevens, acquired in DeRosa deal, to take Hart’s spot on roster tomorrow, putting Cubs pen back at 7 for Cards.

Well, Twit's not exactly right....

…..they still need a starter for Sunday’s 1st or 2nd game, so that would put the bullpen back at 6.

Nobody cares about your fantasy baseball team

by carmen_fanzone on Jul 9, 2009 3:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Only need four

Harden on Friday, Lilly on Saturday, Zambrano and Wells on Sunday.

http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/probable_pitchers.jsp?c_id=chc

by Qixotl on Jul 9, 2009 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Correct, only four starters needed until July 20...

assuming we don’t have any more injuries or any ridiculously long games that require using an extra starter out of the bullpen, of course.

by SouthernCub on Jul 9, 2009 3:28 PM CDT up reply actions

D'oh. Yeah, you're right.

Nobody cares about your fantasy baseball team

by carmen_fanzone on Jul 9, 2009 3:36 PM CDT up reply actions

This is a non-issue...

Hart only has to be in the minors for 10 days. The team won’t need a starter until well after the all-star break. They’ll go with Harden, Lilly, Wells, and Zambrano against the Cardinals. Then, the team gets three days off, and can go with Harden, Lilly, Wells, and Zambrano (in some order) after the break. That means the team won’t need a fifth starter until July 20 at the earliest. So at that point, the team could recall Hart to start on the 20th.

This move was simply made to get an extra bullpen arm for the next eight games while the team only needs four starters. It’s a no-brainer. That’s not to say another move isn’t in the works, but this isn’t necessarily indicative of any bigger move.
