OT: FANTASY BASEBALL ADVISE

Im in the hunt for a fantasy baseball title this year but I lack a solid bullpen... My team hits great and I have survived with Aramis on the bench and an injured Ibanez... I have Grady Sizemore and feel that I can part with him for bullpen help. I need saves... I have Bobby Jenks in the pen and I have been offered Mariano Rivera for Sizemore, he's struggled but seems to be getting hot... Should I pull the trigger???? I hope I posted this in the right spot... I read the posts, not a frequent poster. Great. site.

Um....

I really wanted to change my sig this season, but alas….

Nobody cares about your fantasy baseball team

I was hoping you'd be the first one on this thread.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

I'm thinkin' about having a fantasy woman's swim team. I have one Bar Refaeli...but I might

want to trade her in for someone else. Any recommendations?

trading an elite hitter for a closer is a pretty big mistake unless you’re in a Roto league where you have a lot of room in the standings to move up in saves and REALLY don’t need the hitting

otherwise i wouldn’t move Rivera unless i was multiple pieces, including bullpen help

by DartmouthCubsFan on Jul 9, 2009 5:36 PM CDT reply actions

aren't you arguing both sides here?

by ballhawk on Jul 9, 2009 7:13 PM CDT up reply actions

i dont think so

I’m saying don’t trade Grady straight up for Rivera unless you’re in a Roto league where you can’t earn more hitting points and can only move up in Saves (unlikely at the halfway point in the season)

A true fair value trade would include getting multiple pieces for Grady, including bullpen help (Rivera) as one of the pieces

I would agree you should get more but that could change with more info

What type of league are you in?
How many teams?
What stats does your league count?

by Cubsfan Waveland on Jul 9, 2009 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

absolutely

my response is geared towards a standard format. I suppose there are some very unique formats Rivera may hold more value than Sizemore the rest of the way

in fact… this is one of the best benefits the site I write for does in pre-season valuations. The site provides a draft kit that adjusts player values based on league size, categories, roster depth, etc to give custom values for your league

with so many sites providing fantasy information these days, the type of information you’re getting on players and projections is really pretty similar across the board. The best sites are the ones that can translate those projections for your specific league, and the site i write for is the best in the business at it.

interesting...

obviously in this instance a lot depends on things we don’t know, like what kind of league, position in standings, individual categories, etc.

But in general, I’m surprised you appear to value Sizemore higher than Rivera. I’d agree a Grady Sizemore operating on all cylinders is probably more valuable than Rivera, but this year has not been a typical Sizemore year, whereas Rivera is performing at his usual premium level. And I don’t see anything to indicate that Sizemore will all of a sudden turn it on and get back to his previous levels.

Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."

by ballhawk on Jul 9, 2009 10:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Sizemore contributes in 4-5 categories

Rivera contributes in 3 and his contributions in WHIP and ERA at this point in the season (where he has maybe 30 innings left) are so minimal they have basically no effect

So he can only impact 1 category (this is all assuming its Roto). Of course this can change based on league type, but generally a stud hitter has WAY more value than a closer

by DartmouthCubsFan on Jul 9, 2009 10:47 PM CDT up reply actions

that's just it though

Sizemore has NOT been a stud hitter this year. He’s just getting back from an injury and is enjoying a nice little surge, but he sure started out the year in a rut, relative to past performance.

Now if you’re saying you think Sizemore will be stud from here on out, then yes – he probably does have more value than Rivera. I just don’t think he’s going to be typical Sizemore the rest of the year, hence I’d value Rivera higher. Again, this is all highly dependent on where the original poster is in his categories…

Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."

by ballhawk on Jul 9, 2009 11:37 PM CDT up reply actions

all his peripherals

are exactly in line with past year’s production except a very slight drop-off in his extra base hit rate, which has crept up since he’s returned

a 30 point difference in BABIP is basically the big difference in Sizemore’s production

in July he looks completely normal again .333/.467/.792 with 3 HR’s and 2 SB’s in 24 AB’s.

Now if you want to talk about re-injury risk I could give some credence there, but still selling Sizemore for Rivera is a SEVERE sell-low.

A good closer can only help in ONE category the rest of the year, most teams have already eclipsed 600-700 IP, the effects of Rivera’s ERA and WHIP for 30 or so innings is non-existent, so its JUST saves.

Even if Sizemore duplicated his 1st half (which is a very low ceiling) he’d be worth far more than Rivera

by DartmouthCubsFan on Jul 10, 2009 12:31 AM CDT up reply actions

My belief is

Sizemore is worth Rivera and a mid level starting pitcher (Derek Lowe, Ryan Dempster, Aaron Harang, Gil Meche) if you could use another pitcher and drop a pitcher worse than these guys. Sizemore was a top 20 in most formats to start the year. I see Sizemore finishing the year strong. I think he has 14-18 homers in him with 18-22 steals and 45-50 runs scored.

I tried to acquire Sizemore on a buy low deal, but I got hit with my usual injury bug and my hands were tied. Peavy, Beltran, Outman, DeRosa, and then now Dempster.

The original poster

stated he’s in the hunt for a title…. furthermore that he has survived with Rammy and Ibanez on the bench, obviously doesnt need Sizemore’s stats (maybe minus SB), if his need is Saves then I would definitely do it. You have to trade talent to get talent. Rivera is a top notch closer, one of the first (closers) to go in any draft so I say DO IT. Obviously Sizemore is worth more but when it comes time to trade, you are not going to get a closer for Nick Swisher, unless you want Mike McDougal.

Haha

You guys are funny! Rivera down?? 23 saves and .89 WHIP!! And sizemore is batting .233 with 9 steals. Make the trade!!!
