Salt Lake City, UT and Pearl, MS

I believe Salt Lake City is the farthest of any AAA city from the nearest MLB team. It’s 488 miles from Salt Lake City to Denver.

In AA baseball, I believe Pearl, MS (suburban Jackson), is the farthest away from the nearest MLB team. There are 377 miles between Pearl and Atlanta.

Boise, ID

The Cubs’ own Boise Hawks in the class A Northwest League are 503 miles away from the nearest MLB team in Seattle.

Far from any MLB city, yet....

…still blacked out from Seattle Mariners games! Almost 900 miles away!

Gotta love the black out policy!

i've been through Turner...

…not much going on there. But Great Falls has the rookie affiliate for the White Sox. So….there’s that.

by montanacubby on Aug 10, 2009 3:12 PM CDT reply actions

Great Falls to Seattle

That would be 642 miles from the White Sox-affiliated Voyagers in the Pioneer League to the Mariners.

And then there's the Las Vegas 51's...

… about 2300 miles from their major league affiliate in Toronto.

yeah

I was surprised to find out they were the blue jays AAA affiliate. seems like you would want them a little closer to home than that.

Well, they were affiliated with Syracuse

but Toronto lost the Reaffiliation Roulette last year, so to speak. Basically, there is 1 less Triple-A team east of the Mississippi than there are Major League teams, IIRC, which means someone will always be in a lurch.

  • Nationals: Columbus, OH to Syracuse
  • Mets: New Orleans to Buffalo

  • Marlins: Albuquerque to New Orleans

It's really Gila Bend, AZ

I know it’s only 50 miles from Phoenix but it is really about 1 million miles from civilization.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Aug 10, 2009 5:17 PM CDT reply actions

guess it depends

if we are talking driving distance or “as the crow flies” but it has to be somewhere in montana….opheim or saco maybe?

by circuitclout on Aug 10, 2009 5:53 PM CDT reply actions

Harlem, Montana

is quite a distance away from both Denver and Minneapolis, and a long way from Seattle. I’m sure there is a chart or something I could draw up to truly triangulate this, but I’m too lazy and indifferent. I’m sticking with somewhere in Montana.

somewhere North East Montana

I would think near Plentywood, MT which is in Sherdan County

http://geology.com/county-map/montana.shtml

821 MI to Denver
1100 MI to Seattle
741 to St Paul, MN

I call bull.......

the city I give is further than their answer

Hawaii or Alaska

do they count, or is this continental only?

baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out

by Cubbie-Tim on Aug 10, 2009 6:25 PM CDT reply actions

My thoughts exactly

I’m in Hawaii and we have nothing. We used to have winter league to look forward to but they took that away

by CHCOWNTHECENTRAL on Aug 10, 2009 10:12 PM CDT up reply actions

I know how that is.

They’ve taken everything away at this point; even the Pro Bowl is going to Miami.

Glad I managed to catch it all during my high school years — and play too.

Hawaii in PCL

It’s been a long time since Hawaii had a team in the Pacific Coast League. I remember Rick Reuschel pitching for the Islanders back in the mid-1980’s making a comeback in the Pirates organization.

i would think it is located

Montana or Wyoming

Twins, and Mariners are the “closest”

New Orleans, LA?

Despite the abundance of minor league ball clubs throughout the South, MLB is close to being out of reach. Houston is the closest at 348 miles away, then Atlanta. Tampa Bay & St. Louis aren’t exactly unreasonable either.

The Zephyr’s just don’t cut it.

by LeSaboteur on Aug 10, 2009 11:56 PM CDT reply actions

look above

that is half the distance from the city I went with

by Cubbie-Tim on Aug 11, 2009 10:10 AM CDT up reply actions

We're talking...

…psychological distance, not physical. Especially considering that it’s a major metropolitan area, and not a pissant little town.

And I still need to get a jersey from you, Tim.

by LeSaboteur on Aug 11, 2009 7:50 PM CDT up reply actions

As the crow flies

Its one of these three

Turner, Montana
Loring, Montana
Whitewater, Montana

by circuitclout on Aug 11, 2009 1:37 PM CDT reply actions

Turner is not further, the link is wrong

and here is what i have

Plentywood, MT which is in Sherdan County www.geology.com/county-map/montana.shtml

821 MI to Denver
1100 MI to Seattle
741 to St Paul, MN

if you can check your other choices, and let me know if you are further oir not, that would be awesome. I am honestly interested in seeing if there is one further (by more than 10 miles)

baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out

by Cubbie-Tim on Aug 11, 2009 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions

It's Turner

Use this map and set the radius to 650 miles. You can zoom in and place the marker right on the ballpark. From Coors field Turner is just outside the 650 mile radius and from Safeco it is just barely inside. Plentywood is far too close to Minneapolis to be in the running.

by circuitclout on Aug 11, 2009 4:36 PM CDT up reply actions

incorrect

according to maps.google.com Plentywood is 735 mi from MInneapolis

baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out

by Cubbie-Tim on Aug 11, 2009 5:11 PM CDT up reply actions

It's not plentywood

There are a couple of reasons you might be coming up with the wrong answer. I guess the first is that you are using driving directions, and 2nd, you are using driving directions to St. Paul when the Metrodome is Minneapolis. But straight line distance it is Turner, MT.

by circuitclout on Aug 12, 2009 11:30 AM CDT up reply actions

Ah, Plentywood, Mont.

Quite the party town. Lots of Canadians drive down there to shop/drink.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 14, 2009 12:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Barrow, Alaska

Turner Montana is in the lower 48 but it’s not the farthest US city from an MLB team.

Just win the next game...!
