Pedro Martinez is scheduled to go against the Cubs in place of Jamie Moyer when the Phils play the Cubs in their upcoming series. Moyer is going down to the Phil's bullpen.

Let's make Pedro regret coming out of retirement!

So it's

Happ tomorrow night (threw 127 pitches in his last start), Martinez on Wednesday night and Lee on Thursday afternoon

127 pitches?

127 pitches last Wednesday night

For a complete game shutout against the Rockies.

He gets 5 days of rest instead of 4.

Great

Happ and Cliff Lee. This won’t be an easy 3 game series. It’s winnable though.

$10 says one of two things happens...

1.) Pedro pitches a complete game shutout, striking out at least 10.

2.) He doesn’t get out of the first.

You decide.

He doesn't get out of the first

I predict he’s done. 5+ era in the minors. I know he’s just “finetuning” but he’s being hit. Plus, I don’t want to be wrong.

He gets out of the first

but not through 6. This game will be decided by the bullpens.

Phillies are on their way to being a juggernaut once again

Hamels is rounding back into shape (he’s a top 5 pitcher in the NL). Lee was a HUGE addition. Happ is immensely talented. Kendrick is serviceable. And Moyer and Martinez can round out the back of the rotation. Meanwhile Myers is due back soon and probably goes to the bullpen. If Lidge gets his act together the bullpen will be lights out.

Combine that with a lineup that includes Howard, Utley and Ibanez??? They are definitely the team to beat in the National League.

I agree

The old adage goes, “Pitching wins ballgames”. The Phillies definitely have the pitching.

Pedro's last good year was 2005.

… except for the handful of starts he made in 2007. Hamels has a 4.77 ERA (and 5.32 since July 1). Moyer’s ERA is headed for the stratosphere.

Care to rephrase that?

Phillies pitching

Cliff Lee is a Cy Young winner and has been lights out since coming to the NL. JA Happ is a very talented rookie pitcher with great stuff. Hamels hasn’t been very good for the most part of the year, but he is capable of being an elite pitcher. His last 2 years can’t be a fluke. Maybe he has an injury or something wrong that he hasn’t told anyone about? Blanton is a decent #4 starter. As for Moyer and Pedro they should be a servicable as a fifth starter.

The Phillies have a chance to not make the playoffs, but when they do, I’d rather not face their rotation. Now that I’m thinking about it, I’d rather not face the Giants pitching staff either, althought their line-up isn’t as beefy as the Phillies. With that said I’ll amend my statement. Phillies have enough pitching with their line-up to make them the odds on favorite in the NL. But I’ll still be living and dying with the Cubs and rooting for them 100%.

Now this proves you're full of it

You haven’t watched Hamels much this season have you? He’s good but he has not pitched as well as he did last season. Check his stats this season. 7-7 with a 4.77 ERA. According to people around here, Hamels is going in the wrong direction. He hasn’t pitched that well over the past 3 months.

Thoughts...

1. The Dodgers are still the team to beat in the N.L. I don’t know how the Phillies are really comparable. You guys talk of pitching but see Lidge, Brad. It’s all speculation anyway until October, but I like the Dodgers team much more as a favorite.

2. I love that the Cubs are

3. I cringe at the thought of Shark, a fastball pitcher, starting against fastball hitters like Utley, Rollins, Howard, and Werth. I don’t think Pedro will be terrific in his debut, but he’ll more than likely have some runs on the board to work with. Many of these runs likely from the long ball. If we could only start Jeff against the Pirates this weekend, we would have a better shot. Let’s hope we bring our offense.

2. I love that the Cubs are...

not the favorite this year. I don’t like the national pressure and everyone saying “oh the Cubs will just choke anyway” Playing as the underdog I think is to our advantage, especially for people like Milton Bradley
