I probably shouldn’t have said the first word. Oh well. I’m sick of freaking miles and samardjiza and this crap shoot of a bullpen. I’m sick of this offense. I’m so sick of me!
COOL BEANS!
Thanks for this
So one day we have the best pitching staff in the NL and we can’t buy a hit. Now we are getting hits in bunches to go with our pitching and we find ways I have never seen before to lose!
Wow, when it rains, it really catches completely on FIRE!!!!!
Cubs have to be cursed in some way. This is more than just bad breaks or people not playing up to their regular #’s.
Ugh, this sucks, really really sucks.

Honestly man. A priest blessed the dugout last year and they still got swept. The curse is all hype and nothing more. I cringe when anyone suggests that a team is cursed. Religion has nothing to do with it.

I just could not think past my frustration for what I felt about this team. Sometimes it just boggles my mind how they loose and all the Sabermetrics in the world can’t soothe the anger.
17 hits!!??
holding them to 2 hits in 9 innings, 3 in 12, and WE STILL LOSE!!!!!

Hit the freaking ball in the playoffs. Don’t commit errors in the infield. Don’t play your worst baseball at the wrong time. The 2008 playoffs gave us a preview of the 2009 Cubs.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
How so?
Three games in October gave a preview of a 162-game season one year later? I don’t think so.

Granted. They played worse then, but it did seem like a prelude of sorts.

In retrospect
maybe it seems that way, but what’s a bigger indicator of success, a 162-game sample or a 3-game sample?
The way Cubs fans are, they’d put more credence in a 3-game sample … if it’s bad, of course.

Eh.
I didn’t watch, so I didn’t invest time like many BCBers, but I have to say I’m not surprised. They’re back to the team that finds new ways to lose. Outhitting them by that wide a margin, yet losing. Harden’s great start wasted by another lack of offense. Sure, Happ is a good pitcher, but there were many opportunities.
At least the Cards lost…although it was a chance to gain ground.

I agree completely
I’d argue that the teams from 2007 and 2008 were never actually great because once the playoffs started, Ramirez couldn’t hit and neither could the rest of the team. I predicted earlier this year when Ramirez got his shoulder injury that that was the end of the season. It was a moment of despair on my part, but it’s looking awfully correct.

"The riches of the game are in the thrills, not the money." --Ernie Banks
The season in a nutshell
First inning Soto hits a rope right a Feliz with runners on. Second inning Theriot lines out to Rollins with runners on. And Soriano rips the shit out of the ball with the bases loaded for a sac-fly. Harden is brilliant, as for the most part starters have done well this year. Marmol sucks up the place as normal. Cubs can hit a bullpen, and Gregg gives up another long ball. game over.
And one other thing, Aaron Miles being used again by Lou, what?
One of those years
"Have You heard of the Boom on Mizar 5?"
On the plus side...
…at least this might hasten a complete purge of the front office, etc. This team doesn’t just need new people in charge, they need a completely new organizational philosophy; added scouts, an increased emphasis on fundamental baseball throughout the system, etc. God, I hope Rickett’s is already thinking about people to take over and start the very difficult job of fixing this mess.

True but it seems at times our front office is caught by surprise by these guys
For instance, would Hendry have been so hot to hand out what I always thought was a terrible contract to Dempster if he knew Wells was ready to step up the way he has?
It seems like all of the main contributors fly in under the radar and all of our “can’t miss” guys like Patterson, Pie, Choi, etc. are disasters.

You don't even need all of that.
The Dempster contract was obviously stupid at the time it was made. We’ll all hope for the best, but seriously, it was a misallocation of resources.
The attitude that DeRosa had to be moved… well… just because…. was stupid. As weve discussed a thousand times, it was unnecessary and counterproductive, not only because it made the team weaker at 2B, but because it made the team substantially shallower at half the positions on the field. Hendry “sold high” on a productive player in the last year of a reasonable contract and got three arms that, best case, might result in the middle relief corps being $2-3M cheaper in 2012.
I have absolutely no idea why Hendry preferred Bradley to Dunn or Ibanez or Abreu. Is there any aspect of the game in which Bradley is better than Abreu?
And when, exactly, did Kevin Gregg get Jim Hendry’s attention? Was it last year at this time when Daryle Ward hit a game-winning 3 run shot off of him that may not have landed yet? We all knew Ward was washed up. Why go after the one guy who could give up a 500-foot game winner to Daryle?!
We all know why Hendry locked in on Aaron Heilman. It was because coach Mainieri, who Hendry trusts like the Oracle at Delphi, told him that Heilman “was the best pitcher he’d ever coached.” (Maineiri’s own words.) But can’t Hendry use his own eyes? Heilman has crumbled under pressure for going on 2 years now. That is not the kind of player you move heaven and earth to get.
Hendry is the first Cubs GM I have unconditionally supported since, well…. ever. Which is what makes this last offseason so heartbreaking. He failed in almost every possible aspect. And it’s going to cost him his job.

I'm not so sure this is correct, but it should be.
And it’s going to cost him his job.
For one thing, the sale needs to go through. I don’t think Hendry’s getting fired as long as TribCo still owns the Cubs.
I have to think Ricketts will make changes. As has been mentioned here before, sometimes new leadership wants their own team installed regardless – and if the Cubs miss the postseason, not too many would question a change at GM.

This off season Hendry made bad move after bad move .. Every free agent signing turned out bad .. signing Bradley after a career year to big money , thinking Miles would be good .. Again somethings out of Hendry’s control .. A-Ram getting hurt , Soto into pot , not one Cub having a all time career year .
And don't forget....
He basically GAVE AWAY Marquis (an innings eater who always seems to be on a winner in the last year of a contract…as well…..)
Though I’m still waiting for his usual 2nd half collapse……
The best defense is a good offense.....Lou Pinella...still hasn't managed the Cubs to a post season win. D. Lee still doesn't have a post seasson RBI for Cubs...ditto for Soriano
"It's so simple, it's unbelievable," manager Lou Piniella said. "When you score runs, you win."
The only problem is
Cubs have so many long and expensive contracts, the lineup pretty much will be the same.
Question is will the Cubs sign Harden? Probably not.
"Have You heard of the Boom on Mizar 5?"
Nope
There’s a rebuilding phase coming, which goes to show you how bad of an offseason the Cubs had coming off a 97-win season. That’s front office incompetence at its finest. Here are people I wouldn’t expect to see in a Cubs uniform in 2010:
Rich Harden
Aaron Heilman
Kevin Gregg
Reed Johnson
They can obviously work some trades where possible. Aaron Miles may have his contract eaten in the offseason (good riddance) and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Carlos Marmol traded. Let him be some other team’s headache.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
Thats four from 25
Everyday lineup will remain. No one will take on Dome’s, Bradley’s or Soraino’s contract. Lee, Theriot and Ramy are going nowhere.
Hey I am up for some trades, especially trying to get a quality secondbaseman. I just think moves will be slow.
"Have You heard of the Boom on Mizar 5?"
Can't do this overnight
The Cardinals are losing their rent-a-players unless they decide to increase payroll. The Cubs need to focus on bullpen upgrades and make some appropriate deals.

would you want to trade Dome or Bradley right now? They’re playing pretty good baseball. Riot is cost-controlled. Rami is important to the team’s future.

get rid of Dome?
You have got to be out of your mind. He’s going to get far closer to .300 by the end of the season, and I suspect he’ll punch out a few more homers too. Couple that with an outfielder who can play ++defense in both center and right, and you would have to be insane.

If he can keep this pace and maintain ++defense, he’ll be an absolute monster next season. I except something more “normal”, but nothing like his first season.
So you are saying
It will basically be the same team as this year’s except maybe adding a second baseman .

I give Lou zero credit
The guy got swept out of the playoffs two years in a row. He could not win a World Series with the 2008 Cubs. For that matter, he couldn’t win a World Series with the 116-win 2001 Mariners for Christ’s sake.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
I've been saying for awhile that, as much as I disliked MacPhail, I think maybe...
…he brought out the best in Hendry; his stinginess forced Hendry to be creative with trades. Once Hendry had the purse strings opened, it’s like he suddenly started spending like a drunken sailor. All of his good sense just flew out the window and the result is a series of signings that have the potential to weigh this team down for years.
by bluekoolaide on Aug 11, 2009 11:57 PM CDT up reply actions
Pshaw.
The failure in the playoffs the last two seasons has been systemic, and almost totally confined to physical failures on the field.
The main problem is that we’re paying $18M annually to a player who makes his living entirely on hitting mistake pitches. And he hasn’t seen any of those in the playoffs.
In fact, I think we can speak more generally – this team has a GM who has repeatedly bought into his players’ hype, and overpaid hilariously. For instance Ryan Dempster was last seen walking everyone in sight in the 2008 playoffs…. and we made him one of the richest non-CC pitchers last offseason.
The Yankees figured out that paying $20M/year for elite superstars like CC and Teix works a whole lot better than paying $12-18MM/year for a bunch of Fukudomes and Dempsters.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
While you have points
I would point out that with the way that C.C. is currently pitching for the Yankees, he’s looking a might overpaid too. And take a look at the situation with the Mets. Santana has been great, but not godly, and KRod has had his issues. Putz is out for the year and wasn’t pitching too well before he went down. I mean I know most of their problems are due to all of the other random injuries they’ve accrued….
Basically, as much as I dislike Sori’s contract, there are very few players out there who I’ve watched get big pay-days and then in the year or two after, have said, “Yeah, that guy deserved that absurd contract!”
Will I get really pounded
if I say that Lou might be part of the problem? I don’t think he’s all that good, really. He’s good enough to contend but his teams have trouble with the real “money games”.
And it may be more than just Lou, there’s a whole staff to look at.

I think Lou has built a foundation of winning
The playoffs are a crapshoot. He has won as a player and a manager. He knows how to get his teams pointed in a winning direction. Torre was a tool before things clicked with the yankee’s, and now he may never win another one again. Does that make Torre a bad manager? I don’t think so. Lou has brought the Cubs to wanting and expecting to contend every year now. I think that is huge, and I give him a lot of credit for that.
Good Guys Wear Blue
True, there's no going back
to 2006, or what things were like here before the Dusty/Lou years.
The thing is, changing managers every 3-4 years isn’ t going to get the job done. I know everybody likes to fire the manager, but you’re basically starting over every few years by doing that.
I think there is far too much fatalism on the part of Cubs fans as well. It’s almost like a self-fulfilling prophecy.

And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
I thought that's want people wanted
Lou snapping at media and acting like he had “fire.”
What should he do? Run out to left field and pull Soriano by the scruff of the neck when he botches a play?
Maybe not acting like a jackass is a sign of maturity.

I never really complained about his supposed lack of fire
I mostly complain about his senior moments, or if you don’t want to be kind, his moments of utter incompetence.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
I dunno about that first statement.
I absolutely LOVED the Lou signing, but as time has gone on, I’ve started to think (Bruce is gonna call me out on this again) of the word “senile”. I have a hard time understanding where the fire and tenacity to win went, because it sure as hell doesn’t seem to be with Lou on a daily basis. Some of his managerial decisions over the years (especially late in games) has made me wonder, “I thought this was one of the best baseball minds around!” These days I’m not so sure.

Let me get this straight
12 innings. The Phillies get THREE hits, on base 8 times all game.
The Cubs get 10 hits, on base 17 times in this game.
And Philly wins 4-3???? Oy Vey…

This team is pathetic...
Hey, all you blind optimists out there. You think the Mets choked the last couple of years? They’ve won as many playoff games as the Cubs. And don’t tell me at least they made the playoffs…because it doesn’t matter if you can’t even win 1 game.
How in the blue hell can you get 3 runs on 10 hits? Philadelphia got 4 runs on 3 hits.
How can you get 0 runs on 10 hits in Atlanta?
Marmol has no idea where the ball’s going.
How many home runs has Gregg given up on that piss ass curveball of his?
Here’s my prediction for $10 million Shark: 4 innings 5 runs 6 walks 2 strikeouts
Ryan Dempster is a great benificiary of the Chan Ho Park school…pitch a good year and strike gold. Apparantly Hendry forgot about his playoff start. Of course if Chan Ho faces the Cubs, it’s lights out.
$90 million Zambrano is a headcase who doesn’t take care of himself and by some reports does not show up to his throwing sessions…or at least show up on time.
Geo Soto is a tub of lard, and a 1 year wonder at that. That dude needs an offseason workout if he wants to keep a job.
Theriot may have the weakest arm at short in the game, unless David Eckstein is still there.
Fontenot has been exposed as an everyday player.
Finally, last year was not a success, it was a huge failure.
Cardinals got four runs on 15 hits tonight, IIRC
So there you go.

I have lots of frustration with this team...
Come on NBF, you have to realize that this team has serious flaws. Just look at this objectively, do you really think the Cubs can catch the Cards?
Not without Aramis Ramirez in the lineup
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
Yeah, I do
Because I don’t think the Cubs are as bad as they’ve played at times this year. I also don’t think the Cardinals are as good. Unlike a lot of Cubs fans, I don’t have this fear of all things Redbird.
It’s a three-game deficit, for Christ’s sakes. The White Sox are three games out, too, and their fans seem to think they have a legitimate chance of winning their division.
I think a lot of Cubs fans are pathetic because they fold at the first sign of adversity. They are not the kind of people I’d want beside me in a foxhole if we were fighting a war, unfortunately. The most neurotic fan base in professional sports, without a doubt.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 12, 2009 12:23 AM CDT up reply actions
I respectfully disagree with you...
Blindless optimism is what bothers me about many Cub fans. There are too many signs saying “It’s gonna happen” put that crap away. How do you know it’s gonna happen? For all we know, we all may be dead before this team wins another championship.
Last year was a perfect example. Many assumed the Cubs would blow through the playoffs and get to the World Series. Look how that turned out.
As far as catching St. Louis, can it happen? Sure it can. However, it’s very difficult when your closer has 2 pitches, and 1 of them normally gets hit a long ways, your ace set up man has no idea where his pitches are going, and a big inning for the offense is 2 runs.
Good points, Brucey.
However, I have yet to see a string of victories that makes me think, “Hmph, this is a playoff-ready team”. Those teams take advantage of quality starts, 6+ hits in a game, put down bunts when they need to, etc. Last year’s team I felt supremely confident in that squad’s ability to win with authority, play smart baseball, and work as a cohesive unit. I feel none of that in 2009.

I hate that when I saw Geo buying Kraft Mac & Cheese before the playoffs it appears to have been THE ONLY THING HE ATE IN THE OFF SEASON
I hate that the Cubs have been SO MADDENINGLY INCONSISTENT that I even got the idea of plugging in our offensive production vs. temperature into a spreadsheet
I hate that I COULD HAVE A HIGHER .OPS than Aaron Miles and I play CATCHER in a KICKBALL LEAGUE
Most of all, I hate, that no matter how much they piss me off or make me cry, I will never be able to stop being a Cubs fan.

I don't think it
spoiled me from a baseball perspective, but perhaps from a living in Lakeview perspective. I moved up there at the start of the summer last year, and the mood in the area was just totally different than it is now. I think because the Cubs were doing so fantastically well for much of the season, baseball was being followed more generally than it is this year. Also, we had a relatively nice summer weather wise last year, and it’s been pretty crappy this year so that might have something to do with it too…
Well said...
That’s exactly how I feel. Once you’re bitten by that Cubs bug, there’s no going back.
If Aaron Miles is on this team next year
I will take up another hobby. I’ll still keep an eye on standings and such, but I don’t think I can watch game after game like I do now.
I realize Miles isn’t really the biggest problem and I also realize, bless him, that he’s trying his best.
But it’s the biggest symbol of stupidity, futility and mediocrity we have this year.
And yes, I reserve the right to jump back on. Deal with it.
The Cubs are here to entertain me. I am providing them my time, energy and in some cases, money (I rarely go to games, but buy T-shirts and jerseys and stuff)
If Aaron Miles is the best they can do, I will treat it like I treat a movie with a star I don’t like, or that looks stupid.
If someone tells me the movie is good in spite of that, I’ll give it a chance.

no more need to vent
in my opinion, this is one of those teams that just isn’t going to get it done. They have been every bit as frustrating as 2004, if not more. They just find ways to lose—period.
So, for me, I release my expectations that they are going to win 90 games and take the division. They just don’t have the make-up of a team to do it. I will enjoy watching the games more and rooting for them, but they have left me no choice but to lower my expectations for the remainder of this year.
If one thing is more clear than ever, Hendry does not know how to construct a 25-man roster as we have gaping holes every year. I wouldn’t mind seeing him let go and the end of this year along wiht Lou.
I've been a Cub fan since the early 70's...
…so you’d think I’d have gotten used to the emotional rollercoaster that goes with living and dying with them. Still, it never gets easy. I honestly don’t think they have what it takes to get it done this year. And, no, that’s not ledge jumping or pessimism-it’s my honest assessment based on what I’ve observed all year. However, I still find myself watching every game and hoping for any kind of a sign that they’re suddenly going to “put it together” and go on a run. If they don’t (and things certainly don’t look encouraging at this point), I’ll be disappointed, angry, etc., and I’ll temporarily throw my sports passion behind the Blackhawks and Bears.
And then, come next Feb., I’ll be back again, hope at least briefly rekindled. I couldn’t stop caring about this team if I tried. Somewhere along the way, the Cubs became encoded with my DNA.
Besides, what’s the big deal about winning the World Series anyway? It’s not like it would make me love them any more.
Well said...
summed up my thoughts on the matter very well…this team just doesn’t have “it” whatever that “it” is…we keep hoping and in July it looked like it might be falling into place, but its not going to happen this year.

I’ve been a Cubs fan for some years now, it all started with just a few games, you know, all my friends were Cubs fans so I thought “If they’re doing it…” then it turned into me purchasing Extra Innings and watching nearly every game, shouting ridiculous obscenities at the TV, honestly believing they could hear me.

This is probably the least fun team i have ever watched in my life. They havent won a series against a team with a winning record since April. We have been decimated by injuries. We no longer can pitch. We cant hit. This team is pathetic right now and quite frankly its embarrasing to watch. We are four back now.
I cant believe that this much money has been wasted. ANd it aint getting any better. The following contracts are atrocious: Dempster, Bradley, Dome, Soriano, Miles, with the following being questionable due to injury or other situations Rammy, Z, Lee.. B lou was correct. I was hesitant to admit it at first that this team doesnt have it but it doesnt that doesnt make us bad fans it make us realists. We are probably also in the second worst postition outside the Mets. At least the Nats will most likely have Strasburg and Harper…
I really have never been this depressed watching Cubs baseball. We are officially out of our window to win.

whether or not you think they "have it coming" it's all I ever see you do
I’ve never seen you comment on the action of the game, only a snide response to someone else who is commenting on it. And why does every discussion with you have to devolve into insults? Is it that hard for you to just disagree?
And what is with “they have it coming” that’s like something the school yard bully in some after school special says.
You can attack me all you want. I find it silly, and if that’s how you gotta be, then there’s nothing I can do to stop it, I just think it’s absurd
Most of the time
the game threads around here are unbearable.
And every discussion doesn’t devolve into an insult. But when the usual suspects keep making ridiculous comments, I’m not going to ignore it.
Feel free to reciprocate.

Here's MY vent:
Trading deadline:
We get Jeff Baker -
Cards get Julio Lugo
We get Grabow and Gorzo
Cards Get Matt Holliday
We get Ryan Freel (ok, this was before the deadline by quite a bit)
Cards get Mark DeRosa
Jim Hendry has made me throw up in my mouth again with his decisions.
Again – the Cubs had a shot at Pedro as well. But we have our Wide-out Golden Boy pitcher with two pitches. My bother?
IF the mantra was “We are going for it this year” – why is the company not standing behind this? Oh – wait – never mind…butts are in the seats anyway – and Zell is Zell.
With the luck this team has had...
Pedro would have been injured in his first start for the Cubs and be done for the season.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
wow
This team is just brutal to watch right now. Think I ready for some Bears preseason ball. Happy Jay Cutler day!!

After taking the time to read all of this...
One thing comes to mind. I remember a scene from the movie Fever Pitch. Jimmy Fallon was sitting with all of his season ticket holding Red Sox fans in the midst of a venting session like we are doing now. He said that even though the Red Sox have broken their hearts year after year he made a reference to his personal relationship to his girlfriend. Fallon said that the Red Sox or the Cubs in our case is a relationship that never ends because our team will be there for us every spring. It’s a relationship that never ends because we are always there for our team and they are always there for us, win or lose.
I am personally frustrated like all of you for the inconsistentcy the Cubs have had all year. But I always keep my head high and see the silver lining or find a meaning. I realize all of you are thinking that it looks like there is no hope for the Cubs right now or very little; and if you base it all on history you have nothing to worry about. But for me and hopefully some of you Bleed Cubbie Blue die-hards, I will say this about “basing it on history”:
Every time the Cubs have an amazing summer and all of us Believe “It’s Gonna Happen”, we get ahead of ourselves and before you know it the Cubs send us through the slaughter factory again because the players get tired and run out of gas MOST OF THE TIME (1969, 2008, etc.). Other times, yes it’s been bad luck (1984, 2003, etc.).
This year, nobody seems to believe in the Cubs or any decision that has been made or hasn’t been made by Lou or Hendry and that’s understandable. But I believe that the Cubs are still in this because:
A) Later this month Z, Johnson, Lilly and Ramirez will be coming back from injury.
B) The injuries have been a blessing because we’ve gotten to see the depth of the Cubs and their farm system keep them in The Hunt in an inconsistent fashion AND an injury gives one rest time so there would be no excuse for the Cubs to get tired by the end of the season.
C) Since some Cub fans are sort of shutting down their hopes, the old adage will come true… that adage saying: everyone is afraid to jump off the bandwagon because then the team will turn around and go all the way (nobody said they’re jumping off they’re just looking forward to football).
D) What can I say, I’m a die-hard. I never stop believing until the Cubs are mathematically eliminated from contention (not mentally eliminated from contention). Even after elimination, I’m still believing, the way it should be, hence the “Blindless Optimism” that some of you may post from this novel of a tangent of venting by me (thanks for reading this far, it’s almost done!). Hey, I’ll still root root root for the Cubbies win or lose (that’s love) but I won’t say “It’s Gonna Happen” after being eliminated (that’s blindless optimism).
In conclusion, there’s 50 games left, there’s still time. The Cubs can still win, even if it’s ugly. You just never know, that’s why they play all 162 games. I know all of you are going to try and remind me about everything that has been Cubs baseball in 2009. I don’t care, I’ve read everything above. Miracles happen everyday. We can all either vent about it, or have fun with it, just believe. Also, if the Cubs can hang in there going into late September, they go up against St.Louis, Milwaukee twice (NL Central), San Francisco (NL Wild-Card) and then a couple of basement teams at home. Will you be there to root for the Cubbies in contention or not? I know I will. Play Ball!!!

I was curcumcised at the age of 8 days,
and I’d rather be re-circumcised every eighth day then watch this team on a daily basis. I watched damn near every game last season; this season, not so much. I don’t know if I’ve watched more than 3 games from beginning to end this year, and it’s a good thing that I haven’t.
I love this fucking team, but boy do I hate it.
Why am I so frustrated?
I seriously knew exactly what would happen today yet for some reason I still watched the game. This team is beyond frustrating to watch… First of all, can someone please tell me why Bradley was batting 3rd today and why Soriano is still in the lineup? Bradley has proved he cannot hit in the 3, 4 or 5 hole and that he CAN hit in the 2 hole. Soriano has proved he can’t hit anywhere. Does Lou not realize this? And one more thing. What the hell has happened to Dempster? This guy hasn’t been good all year. I remember last year whenever he pitched, especially at home, he was money. Near guarantee win. Now I have as much confidence in him as I did when he was our closer.
It just sucks that this team gets all of our hopes up only to not live up to the hype.
Lou needs to be fired. He has proven that he cannot take the pressure in Chicago and that he has lost nearly all of his “brillant” baseball knowledge. This team is like a hot girlfriend that keeps pissing you off: you always fight and argue and swear that you hate her, but the second you catch a glimpse of what could be, you fall in love all over again.
Sorry if this is lengthy but living in AZ i have no one to vent to other than myself so its cool to come on here and do it with fans.

Venting alone
Dear fighterofthenightman,
I’m in Connecticut and my beautiful wife has to watch me go through this every year. Thank the Lord for Al and this post. If you are out there Al, I do have a question. Why would Hendry take away 40% of a 97 game winning team? It was obvious to me that last year, the pressure got to them. One year of seasoning probably would have got the Cubs a WS or much closer than 2008.
That's a good question.
I don’t have an answer, unfortunately.

Because, ultimately, that team failed
And ultimately, the guys who still are here from last year underperformed this year. Unless you think one of the new additions spread a bad-baseball virus or something.

"When they signed Fukudome, I knew they were trying to get me fired". - Ron Santo, January, 2008
Hi, my name is Lance, and I'm a Cubs fan.
I keep repeating that in my head, but it’’s not helping. My chip from 2003 is weathered, and my neighbors are starting to talk to the other neighbors about the tattered “W” flag I keep out back as a relic of game 4. My chip from 2007 is gone, I cashed it in for a “Kyle Orton is our QB” t-shit at bears camp last year… as you can see, I’m a bit of a devoted fan. My chip from 2008 is still here. I look at it from time to time, with fond memories of the regular season. I think of Mark DeRosa, and Aramis Ramirez… playing a bunch of games… I remember solid middle relief, and an 8th inning man that made the All Star team. As a matter of fact, I remember 7 or 8 All Stars, all ultimately on a winning team. I team that won, and then lost… and then as such, I cash in my 2008 chip, for a Jay Cutler jersey. I cash in my memories, on a guy that’s already thrown 5 of 10 passes for completions, and one of those an interception… because you know what? No matter how hard it gets… no matter how many games back, no matter how negative the media… I’m a god damned Chicago sports fan, and a Cubs fan to the end. And I TRUST Kevin Gregg will throw better (in another city, preferable Des Moines) and I trust Alfonso Soriano will hit for average (before the post season, of course, when he’s 0 for the century) and god damnit I trust my Cubs will make up the difference, mount a comeback, and make this one hell of a ride, hopefully to bring us to the postseason! At which time they’ll promptly lose 3 in a row, we’ll all be cheering on the Bears (as if this year never happened) and all talking about the new manager and the fantastic post season acquisitions to come!
Kidding aside, Gregg needs to go. Experiment over. I’d feel better about Marmol out there every day… at least I KNOW he’s has success with this team. I’m not giving up, Cubs fans… but my faith is wavering. Let’s get it together, here.
It all blows
Getting chances with men in scoring position and not getting a hit. It seems that the Cubs hate to score but seem to hate to score with 2 outs and a man on 2nd or 3rd or God forbid bases loaded . Then Kevin watch me give up a few homeruns a game Gregg seems to find his way back on the field without question. All in all I cant even think because im so pissed. It all boils down to Jim Henry sucks Cardinal balls
by bigshortyskater on Aug 18, 2009 12:29 AM CDT reply actions
The only thing
that I think keeps alot of Cubs fans going is the simple fact that there are enough games for a miracle to happen, for this team to, by the Grace of God, catch fire, and for the lead in the division or in the Wild Card, again by the Grace of God, open up and allow the Cubs to slip in.
I say this because I personally have lost every bit of faith in this team. And yeah, I do get angry at those who do have faith in this team simply because I can’t understand it, but that’s their God given right
I don’t think I have ever seen a closer blow a game with two outs and two strikes on a hitter as many times as Gregg has this season.
The Cubs’ avg w/RISP speaks for itself.
enough to make you sick
I for some reason seem to think he will through most of the time and like clock work 2 out 2 stikes games over.

Well, the law of averages, the outrages of Wild Card proximity, and the clearly turbulent waters of the league mean anything can still happen. Who knows but that another Surge might vomit upwards and turn into an epic come back ..
But I will say this. Two losses to the Pads are not exactly encouraging

These last two losses against the Padres have gutted me
like nothing else for ages. It has sapped so much energy out of me.
I thought we’d get blown away from the Dodgers at the worst, but the Padres? At least it gave their suffering fans something to smile about. I really mean it, I’m glad someone enjoyed it in a postitive manner, rather than Cubs haters rejoicing at our suckiness.
It's nearly 5 AM and I'm still so mad I don't even know where to start
Oh, no, wait, I do know…I’ll start with the handful of rotten ass posters who would rather troll than TRY to root for this team. If the Cubs get a hit, they’re trolling Drew, and if they’re losing, they’re trolling everyone else. I don’t know if I’m stepping over a line here, and if I am, this can be deleted, but for goodness sakes, get rid of these people. What, in all honesty, do they bring here that isn’t any type of trolling effort. I just don’t get.
What I also don’t get is our teams manager. Sue mentioned him being senile and getting blasted for that. I’ve been saying that for awhile now, and I agree with her completely. He is senile, he is done, I don’t care about his history, HE’S DONE. Lou, your career as a manager is over. Do the right thing and step down. At this point, I’ve now come to the conclusion we’re probably not making the post season, and it’s not because of Hendry, or even Miles, wait, it is his fault too, but mainly, we’re not making the post because of Lou. Here’s one I’ve been saving in my back pocket, Sweet Lou has gone sour. How about that? Someone, ANYONE on this team needs to be a fucking man and step up and put an end to this nonsense. I don’t care if that’s D Lee, Lilly, or anyone else, any time Lou goes to PH the wrong f’n guy, first off, that guy needs to say NO, and secondly, the rest of the team needs to say NO. This may all sound nuts, but if you can’t even stand up to the man who has steered this ship into the cliffs, then why even bother playing the rest of the games this season?
I’m still happy to be a fan, I’ll still be there in the bleachers on 9/2, I’ll still buy hats and shirts, I’ll still watch them on my TV, and I’ll still post here. None of that will ever change. What has changed though is my belief that this team still has something left. Well, unfortunately that’s not a reality because Lou has sucked the life out of this team to power his crusty old man body for another year.
