The 2009 Cubs: In Their Own Words

I went back through online news reports for the past two months or so and found a LOT of interesting quotes from the Cubs. I thought I'd share them with you for review and comment.

NOTE- Context is NOT provided and the quotes are not attributed to the source (though you can get a pretty good idea who is saying at at times). The quotes ARE all from Cubs players, coaches, managers or GMs- and in one case the Commissioner of MLB.

(I would have put more in, but after going back through Tribune articles for two months, I got tired and so did the quotes...)

In their own words – Cubs 2009

''I think by the last week of August, we should be healthy. And then we're home, where we play better."

''There's a lot of baseball left…"

"I was doing pretty good two weeks ago, and all of sudden it starts to hurt. It just happens."

"The whole year's been tough,"

"If this works, we'll stay like this for a while. If it doesn't, we can always change."

"Let's put the attention on them and leave us alone."

"His velocity wasn't there, fastball-wise."

"He has a little bit of a tired arm,"

"We've just got to put it together, have a good month, and we'll be fine."

"I'm back. Mark it down."

"I'm going to pitch on Monday, even if you tell me not to."

"I don't have power in my hands because I can't grab the bat,"

"I've played with pain before, but I'd never been injured (until arriving in Chicago),"

"We have some other problems brewing we need not talk about right now,"

"I've been told that [the media] is making too much of that."

"The club will be much better off when they have an owner."

"Let him keep working with Von on his swing and we'll go from there,"

"Throwing is an afterthought."

"We've got to hit,"

"You're 15th in the league in runs scored. Not going to get it done. Period. I mean we can mask this any way we want to mask it, but we've got to start scoring runs with more consistency to win baseball games. If we hit the ball and continue to pitch, we'll be fine. If we don't, we're going to struggle."

You never want to do anything like this. It's a weird thing. Three days before that, I took a ball off the shin, and kick-saved one to myself, and took a ball off the face in batting practice, off the cage, and I was fine. And then something as simple as that happens, and I have to put myself on the DL."

"Best case scenario three weeks, but probably a month…"

"It's something that you never expect to happen. Just a freak thing."

"Hopefully he starts hitting the ball for some power and driving in some runs."

"Put Sammy out there and lose four in a row, and see if they like the story."

"Everything we do here is all predicated on whether we win or lose baseball games here"

"Forget everything else. I'm a good manager when we win, and I'm a [expletive] manager when we lose. C'mon. That's the way it is."

"We do the best we can."

"There's a lot of guys who go through free agency and in their first year they're trying to justify the contract,"

"He was starting to throw better at Iowa."

"…our job is to stay close, and hopefully we'll get hot at home...We need to get a little hot streak going. I don't remember the last time we put together any kind of a winning streak at all."

"I think his presence in the lineup will make people around him better. Don't expect him to come over here and have to drive in five runs a game for us. Just be yourself, and I think that's going to be a big lift in itself."

"Fine, trade me to Boston,"

"Probably be back on Monday,"

"Everybody has got to do their job. They can think whatever they want, but we have 25 guys here and everybody has got to do their job. It's not like I'm going to jump in and all of a sudden we're going to win every game."

"He wants to try a couple things with Milton from the left side,"

"Look, things get a little heated in the clubhouse at times,"

"But, look, it happened. What can you say? A lot of things happen."

"The last time someone called me a piece of (expletive) I tore my ACL,"

"It's just wasted energy,"

"My head is fine,"

"While I full acknowledge my inappropriate behavior, I want to assure my fans and my family that this was an isolated incident,"

"Let's just call it a day off for today,"

"It usually works. This one didn't work."

"I'm done with the 'occurrences- they were funny at first, but, no, they're not funny any more."

"…with these extra inning games we've played, you're (risking) overtaxing a bullpen that's already been overused a little bit."

"I don't think it's any different from anywhere else: Catch the ball and throw it where it needs to go."

"…gosh, we've got to see something. Me having confidence is good, but eventually, it's got to translate to some offense on the field, and it hasn't. Invariably, I'm going to have to do things I don't want to do, and hopefully I won't have to, but what can I say?

"It's not like we're going from Algebra I to Algebra II, and then to trigonometry. Basically it's all things they've done in the past... We're not talking about going from Latin to Greek, OK?

"We treat people like men here."

"I'm not one to dump all the blame on my coaches. But I think sometimes you need a different voice."

"We've stayed pretty constant for 60 games or so, I think it's time to change things around a little bit."

"Well, it's a difference between what I think and what they think."

"I wish we had a magic formula for that,"

"I think we're going to be all right. I like our chances."

"I don't know what else we can do."
