Nice write up on Sam Fuld. I didn't know anything about him other than what I saw on the field. Good luck to him.

Nice Story

This adds a lot of context to the recent Wall Street Journal Report that..

Only 26 MLB players, Coaches, AND managers had college degrees. Nice find.

Thanks Al,

This if the first time I’ve ever posted anything other than comments and to be honest, I was kind of nervous I’d screw it up. I read through the site to make sure I was posting it in the right spot, but still wasn’t 100% sure.

Nailed it!

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

Rec'd

For Multiple reasons. First, great fanshot. Much better than the daily calls to fire someone because of their performance.

Secondly, I knew there was a reason I liked him. He was an Econ major. I was an Econ major. Admittedly, I didn’t go to Stanford, but, still.

Thanks for the link HoodooMan but if all you knew was his on on field work

you having been ignoring my posts for a long time. It was a lovely article but gee folks don’t know he went to Stanford, has a degree in economics and is working on a graduate degree in statistics ,what his parents do etc. Obviously I need to do more Fuld obsessed posts.

Well, quite simply...

…I didn’t know these things about him before because it’s hard to care to much about a guy who is on a bus to Iowa every couple days.

I always enjoy stories about the guys who you don’t expect getting a shot, but I don’t think any of us realistically expect him to have long term position at the Major League level.

Well between Stanford degree

and the fact that I am pretty sure his wife who works in banking in New York makes even more than he does I think he will be OK
financially outside of baseball BUT I don’t see why he cant’ have many years of productive baseball playing at the MLB level. It is
far from a sure thing but not that far fetched either.

Not gonna lie...

But I find it a little weird that you know what kind of work his wife does, and where she does it.

by kanderber on Aug 12, 2009 5:41 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't actually know what she does specifically

Just that she is in banking ( Ok I know the company too) Seriously I was surprised myself but all I did was google her. I think it is very sweet he married someone he met in HS. I like to have fun with my interest in Fuld but his the kind of player I like.
I always admired great defense over offense as it way under appreciated. Maybe Fuld can find some new stats on how to value it more accurately. It is nice to see a guy who worked so hard to make it and who unlike most other players could likely be making more money now if he was NOT playing baseball.

Valuation of defense

The stat geeks these days seem to think that elite defensive performance can’t outweigh elite offensive performance, but that it’s quite significant. Significant enough, for example, that there’s a serious case made that Nyjer Morgan is as valuable as Adam Dunn.

According to these guys, Dunn’s defense is so bad that he’s been a below-average player (according to Fangraphs’ WAR calculations, summing “Batting”, “Fielding”, and “Positional”) in 2008 and 2009.

Thanks for the link

I am not much of a sabrmatics person but it is nice to see someone try to see the value of speed and defense as opposed to power in particular. Doubt Lou will be reading this though.

Well, to be honest Jessica

I did make the conscious decision to ignore all of your posts, until now. Just kidding but I will say in my defense that as a dad of 4, I just don’t have the time to read everything that comes across BCB, so I must have missed your previous posts about Fuld. The other reason I’ve missed some stuff on BCB is that I’m trying really hard to maintain some sanity during this season and this team is really taxing me. The roller coaster ride is sometimes a little too much for me and I need to take a break from my obsession.

Read the Fuld article on the train last night.

Very interesting – I still like Fuld as a defensive replacement/pinch runner. And I can’t help but wonder whether he may end up sticking with the Cubs organization after his playing days and leading the charge to incorporate more statistical analysis into scouting and player acquisition & development. Uh, then again, let’s hope it doesn’t take that long.
