Agree on Soriano, Disagree on Zambrano
I would have to agree with Soriano. Early on this season, I thought Soriano was getting better defensively in left field, but he’s made a lot of errors out there since then. BTW, he hasn’t done so well at the plate. He isn’t a 30 HR-30 SB guy these days.
As far as Zambrano goes, I think he is overpaid, but I think he has and will continue to win enough games to keep that contract from being a terrible one. I don’t think it’s a good contract by any means. I just don’t think it’s terrible.

I agree with this.
Also, Zambrano would have gotten more on the open market if he didn’t sign that contract.
Someday we'll go all the way...

your 2nd point
is completely irrelevant
it just means he would have been further up the list

I see it as...
When Zambrano and Soriano are good, everbody loves them. But when the aren’t so hot, everyone jumps on them. It’s never easy to tell what a player is going to do year after year. The money may fit the man in the end. We just have to see how they do while still on the Cubs, then judge them. They may help the team beyond anyone knows in the future.

Completely agree.
However, as a huge fan of both, they also bring a lot of crap on themselves. Z acts like a 12 year old. Soriano not hustling his ass out of the box. So I understand why people get on their case.
Don’t these guys have PR people?

Soriano's contract is the worst in baseball
And there are 5 more years on that deal, a deal that escalates each year.

Vernon Wells would be lucky to get 5 million on the open market.
Soriano could at least get 8-10.
Randy Wells. A product of the Roy Halladay School of Pitching, located in Toronto, Canada. Possible relocation.
Yeah, who knew signing an injured 36 year old pitcher would be a bad idea.
Though, to be fair, I’d imagine most of that contract was covered by insurance.
Probably so.
Still, a complete waste of time.

and a limited number of years
i believe only 2….
big difference from an EIGHT year deal….
Soriano is going to still be on our books when Obama is either halfway through his 2nd term or we’re halfway through the first term of a new president
think about it

Probably not
I read where most MLB don’t insure anymore. Did the math and it is too expensive.

did you read the article
Vernon Wells is getting paid more, and is having a far worse year…yes, he is doing worse than Soriano somehow. After reading this article, I don’t feel so bad having Jim Hendry as a manager, because Ricchardi(sp) really seems like a dumbass after this read and after the way he dealt with Halladay this year.

Wells got a $25.5 million signing bonus too...

Soriano

No, it doesn’t, his contract is for $18 million per year from 2010-2014, plus bonuses. So there is no escalation.

harumph. Always with the facts.
Why you gotta ruin BLou’s mojo with something like truth and accuracy?

So, when you say things that are wrong
Do you know that they are wrong and say them anyway, or do you see people correcting you and then get too embarrassed to respond?
He is getting paid less than players that are less valuable according to every statistic except for your mysterious BLOU+ ([guts + hustle] / guess-swing hack – hop).
It’s not a good contract. It is not the worst.
Did you even bother to read the article?
Zambrano does not “make the list.” He’s mentioned in the preamble as potentially having a bad contract – and I quote:
…but it’s a different deal because Zambrano’s still a good pitcher, and quite often an awesome pitcher. His problems are … er … tougher to define.
This is exactly what many of us have been saying about Z for a long time. Sure his contract is questionable – just about any long-term contract for a pitcher is, in some sense, questionable. But he’s a good pitcher – and that’s all that really matters (to me anyway).
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.
I figured someone would bring that up...
So good catch. Yes, I read the article before posting. I agree that he is a good pitcher and probably worth the contract, but noththeless he is mentioned in the article as having a “different kind of bad contract.” I adjusted the article description appropriately.
