What a load of Crap: 17-2 And this Proves??
Joy. Whoppee. What a team! A great win.
It was fun to watch - and nice to see the lumber applied for once. Is it possible that the Cubs can play the Pirates every game for the remainder of the season? So after the Cubs have their asses completely handed to them by the Marlins, Rockies, and Philles, the Cubs come back to thrash the AAA Pirates 17-2. What does this mean?
Absolutely jack, imo. In fact, it is infuriating. Actually, it means that RIGHT NOW the team is not in the same class with the above-named teams, and you may include the Dodgers, Giants, and Braves. This was like Slippery Rock Teacher's College playing University of Texas in college football. It is false bravado. On a very bright, non-sarcastic note, I am extremely happy for Randy Wells. What a great surprise and without him I can only imagine where the team would be now. Many players overrate "momentum" in baseball. At the least, perhaps the players were suitably embarrassed enough to play "real baseball" again. So what about the rest of you? Does sweeping the Pirates (if it happens) bolster the Cubs optimism? Will they turn it around and play .650 baseball for the rest of the year? Will they climb out of the MLB RISP cellar? Or, will they go out to the West Coast and get their asses kicked once again?
In my mind - I am not getting "giddy".

Beating the Pirates 17-2
proves to me that we as Cub fans whine too much. We could be Pirate fans, who have absolutely nothing to be optimistic about.
Signing Maclouth to a 3-year deal in January, then jumping him in late May was an embarrassment. He should have been the guy they hung on to and built around. But no, it proves they have no direction as an organization.
A win is a win. Just don’t go getting shut out tomorrow :)

When you sign up to be a Pirates fan
You know what you’re in for.
We had higher expectations.
If you’re telling me our expectations are to be a barely over .500 team who can pound the little guy but lose to the big guy, then fine.
My expectations are higher.

ok. Don't get giddy.
It’s a win, and winning is better then losing. I don’t think anyone’s taking this and suggesting that it means we’re going to win the World Series based on this performance.

against whom are you arguing?
i don’t think there will be anyone saying that beating the pirates today 17-2, in and of itself, means we have a great team. this is a straw man.
Cubs will win 79 to 83 games. Season has been over for weeks. St. Louis will eventually run away with this division. And you can print it. BLou (7/21/09)

My thoughts exactly.
Cards fans may like to dismiss it as meaningless, but why as a Cubs fan do you think one game HAS to mean something? Sure sounds like a troll…least i sure hope he is. If you can’t just enjoy a victory like this after a losing streak, can’t be much of a fan.

Pros and Cons
Jake Fox, DLee and most of the offense hit the ball hard, but Soriano still struck out looking like an idiot in the 3rd inning. The only reason he didn’t K in the 2nd when he hit the RBI single is because with 2 strikes they decided to throw a fastball instead of anything crooked.

This does not reflect...
the view of Al Yellon or SB Nation!
Hey guys, this is the “Soapbox” section, right?
Sure, a win is much better than the alternative.
And indeed plenty of positives. However, looking at the Wild Card standings, they now have 4 teams to hurdle.
So, while beating up on the Pirates is great, the contrast between this game and any against the good teams is striking.
I will be “happiest” when the team can play effective, fundamental baseball against the competition that they must beat. This has not happened in 2009.
So, I am entitled to share my opinion here.
Please do not misconstrue my feelings that I am genuinely glad for those of you there today. It was a hit-parade for sure. I am merely expressing frustration out loud that they have sucked for nearly 12 straight games, yet manage to beat up the Bucks.

It Broke A Losing Streak, Enjoy the Win!
Any win is good, but it’s especially good when it breaks a losing streak regardless of the competition. If the Cubs had lost today, there would have been complaining that the Cubs couldn’t even beat one of the worst teams in the National League. Does this win today mean they are guaranteed to finish the season on a red hot streak, win the division, and go 11-0 in the postseason? Heck, no! However, the first step in making a late season charge is beating up on the Pirates. Enjoy the win!

I was sitting in my office today and saw the 10 run inning
And KNEW there would be at least one post like this on BCB today. Look, I want to doubt this team as much as the next guy, but doesn’t a game like this ultimately show what this team is and HAS BEEN capable of all year? We had two of our main offensive weapons sitting out today (I use that term VERY lightly with Bradley, recent performance excluded) and we still managed 18 hits an 17 runs. I think that says a lot about a team coming off a 5 game losing streak and a couple of really disappointing blow outs. A lot of other teams would just phone it in the rest of the year, but I think we have enough guys who are still hungry that we can make a real race of this thing over the last 1/3 of the year. I think we all need to take a deep breath, enjoy today’s result, and use this as the litmus test against which to judge the laugher losses we’ve endured over the past few ballgames.

The point is after an entire week of losing horribly, this win felt good
it regained some confidence, to the players as well as to almost every fan out there. its a great start to the weekend, lets hope its a great start to a great rest of the first season. all of us here know the cubs are the freaking phillies or anything, but we still love the cubs, and will be super excited when they win, especially when its a big win. Every game counts (cept i guess if you already clinched or a re eliminated, but even then games still matter, for morale, etc) Yes it was against a AAA team, essentially, but if the cubs would have lost or even won by 1 or 2 runs, ppl would be like “OMG THE CUBS COULDNT EVENT BEAT THE PIRATES, etc..” so noone can ever win. Be happy they won and move on
by CubsFanInWisconsin on Aug 15, 2009 12:26 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Also i think people are giddy over the blowout, not necessarily that its the turning point to the rest of the season
A win feels good. a big win feels better. people are in the euphoria of the blowout let them bask in it for a while. Hopefully this is the fire under them that will get them going, but like its been said many times above, one game at a time.

Look, you can hold two ideas in your head
You can cheer this victory as a single chapter to a book. It was fun to “watch” on Gameday. I can’t even imagine watching it on TV or in person.
And you can also say, “Well, yeah, Pirates… let’s see what happens when we face a real team”
Holding both positions doesn’t make you less of a fan.

I want to thank everyone
here for listening and either taking a jab – or agreeing.
I got it out of my system.

someone needs a timeout
Would you have been happier if the Cubs had lost?

It proves one thing
They have one more tick mark in the “W” column; period.
Just win the next game...!

I'm bored. So I apologize in advance
Your sig line – periods of ellipses are used to convey trailing off at the end of a sentence. An exclamation point is just the opposite. It doesn’t make sense to have them in series like that.
Told you I was bored.

Maybe he means...
…that he’s pointing his finger or making some other exclamatory gesture after uttering the sentence. Like:
“Just win the next game…”
[PAUSE]
:::Shakes fist menacingly::: “….!”
And, yeah, I’m bored and depressed about the Cubs, too.
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.
