Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

While the Cubs put up 17 a former Cub farm-hand got into the action tonight with a cycle!

Congrats to Felix Pie on the accomplishment. He was a controversial subject here at BCB but as a guy who always thought Pie would eventually figure it out, it's nice to see some of the talent transition into production (at least for a night).

Congrats Felix, wishing you the best

Good for him!

I remember how excited he was when he hit that 2 run single in the 15th (I believe) in Pittsburgh. I always loved his defense!! I hope for the best for Felix and that Baltimore team that has a young, and very very high ceiling outfield. Nick Markakis is already one of the better players in the AL.

At the risk of taking a dump in the punchbowl...

…one great game by no means indicates that “he’s figured it out”.

the cubs lineup needs moar LIND and HALLIDAY

Not only that

Pie needs to stop swinging for the fences and just bunt all the time! Hitting for the cycle is just going to make him a worse player because it will only make him think he can succeed at the ML level. It’s sad, really.

Mmm, tasty punch.

I dont think the OP was intimating he had figured it out at all

Just that this was finally a flash of what he expected out of him

Good for him...

I always liked Pie and his enthusiasm for the game. I hope he figures it out and goes on to have a good career.

Someday we'll go all the way...

Congrats to him.

I’m sure most on BCB will bring it down bc he never lived up to his potential.

I always liked Pie

I seem to remember him having some sort of testicular injury, and I can’t imagine how painful that must’ve been to play through. My favorite Pie memory was his 3 run home run at Wrigley against the Mets and his fist pump as he rounded the bases. I think it was after returning from the afforementioned injury.

I was going to make a fan post

I attended the game tonight in Baltimore, expecting to see the Angels rip the O’s, and my family and I get to see Pie get the cycle and O’s put up 16 on the Angels.
We had seats four rows from the field, leftfield. First inning Pie air mailed a throw back into the infield to let a run score, then in the third made a nice diving grab close to the line.
All his hits were ropes except for the single which was a ground ball in the hole between third and short. Getting the triple last was nice, rightcenter, slid into third and the crowd ( 27,000, fireworks afterwards) gave him a standing O. Good night, a lot of fun. Great ballpark if you get to the East coast.
I just wish he would get 500 AB’s for a season and see how he does. I think he made the dog house at Lou’s place. He has a great hitting coach in Baltimore in Terry Crowley, who knows, maybe he becomes a player.
As much as this board has tired of Brian Roberts, the guy would be a wonderful fit in Chicago, he is a solid player. Oh, my bad we have Miles, damn almost forgot.

Pie is only 24.

It’s still possible he might have a decent major league career.

pie

good job. i hope he learns to hit big league pitching on a regular basis. only 24 and seems like he,s been around forever.

by NOMAR on Aug 15, 2009 7:32 AM CDT reply actions

There have already been 7 cycles this year

Which, as far as I can tell, is a record. Pie’s accomplishment isn’t even on ESPN’s front page right now – either cycles are no longer that newsworthy, or they only are when its a star player doing it (Melky Cabrera, Tulowitzki, etc).

Congrats to Felix - saw the highlights on MLB Network last night.

FWIW, he has an .808 OPS in 42 PAs since July 1. His overall season OPS is over .700 now. And, as Al mentioned, he’s still pretty young. I’m not saying one red-hot night proves anything, but I hope he gets more playing time for the remainder of the season. (It’s not like the O’s are going anywhere.)

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

Am I the only one...

Who really doesn’t care that much about hitting for the cycle?

by kanderber on Aug 15, 2009 9:07 AM CDT reply actions

I think there was a Fanpost on this topic recently.

To me it’s interesting – anecdotally, at least.

Interesting quote by the O's manager

“And he’s turned the corner as far as being a professional and being accepted in the clubhouse.”

That makes you wonder how much of his trouble in Chicago was purely mental. I still think it was the right move to unload him, because I hate stupid or clueless baseball players. (Corey “I am not changing my approach to hitting” Patterson being at the top of my list…) But I hope Pie has a respectable Henry Cotto type of major league career.

It's a simple question, Doctor: would you eat the moon if it were made of ribs??

by Invalid User on Aug 15, 2009 10:05 AM CDT reply actions

Um yeah.

His manager was publicly saying he would fail. They tried to change his approach in scattered, limited ML playing time instead of letting him work it out in AAA. I guess you could call those mental challenges.

Good for him

He’s had some tough times. He’s in a bad position there, with Reimold deserving PT, so his future likely isn’t there, but it was nice to see that on the highlights last night. It sure looked like he knew he needed a triple for the cycle on that last AB, as he was chugging from start to finish on a ball that some guys might just play it for a double. Certainly, he knows he has the speed, which makes a difference, but it looked like he went up there and once he saw where the ball was headed, he turned it on going for the cycle. Good for him.

I dunno

over the last month, his line is not bad. It’s only 41 PAs, but still.
