Sunday's Cubs/Pirates Game Postponed

There is no other information at this time, but the MLB.com scoreboard page is now reporting the game has been postponed. Expect a doubleheader to be played sometime during the Pirates' visit to Chicago on September 29, 30 and October 1.

I'll have more to say about this a bit later.

Couldn't they have played

the entire game in the time they took to have that rain delay?

Yes.

Or enough to make it official.

Cubs stayed out of loss column - one way or another.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

The Northwest Herald Twitter guy confirms:
@payoff_pitch: That’s it. Game called after 3 hour, 15 minute delay. #Cubs

Is this because the Cubs have to catch their flight or something? Things look like they’re clearing up somewhat by me. Seems like a 5 or 5:30 start wouldn’t have been unreasonable.

I think the flight has a lot to do with it.

Starting at 5:30 means the Cubs flight wouldn’t leave till 10 pm or later — an awfully long day.

I guess. It is a night game tomorrow, though.

Then again, maybe a makeup game vs. the Pirates will come in handy later in the season.

West Coast game, though.

I think the long flight time and 2-hour time difference factored into this.

yes

we all have to remember that as much as we dont like to work 12 hours in a day I am sure that these guys dont like to do it either – especially when 90% of that time would be spent in the clubhouse passing the time.

that shouldn't be an issue.

a couple of rainouts earlier this season were night games and rescheduled as day games so Cubs should have a bit of a buffer zone in terms of reaching the limit on # of night games.

And what would have happened

Had they been losing after 5 innings.

Everyone would have complained they shouldn’t have played today if they didn’t think they could get in 9 games.

by ak123 on Aug 16, 2009 5:01 PM CDT up reply actions

The team is "hot"

and won two games in a row. More than any recent times, I would say that your argument is not very solid in the case of the Pirates.

by The E-Man on Aug 16, 2009 5:04 PM CDT up reply actions

You kidding?

Ohlendorf has actually won games with the Pirates.

Rich Harden while really good lately, could have easily had a bad game. The Cubs also had Miles and Fontenot playing.

They had Fox in LF for what the 2nd or 3rd time all season and we don’t know how Aramis is feeling.

After 5 innings, the game could have been 5-3 in Pirates favor.

by ak123 on Aug 16, 2009 5:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, Rich Hill had a no hitter

for almost six innings. Seen his stats for his last three starts?

I don’t care who the Cubs started today including Aaron Freakin’ Mild – I’d still give the ods to the Cubs, and Vegas I’m sure would agree.

We’d STILL have A-Ram, D-Lee, Fuku – all better than ANY Pirates players.

On to the West Coast!

by The E-Man on Aug 16, 2009 5:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Ohlendorf isn't exactly chopped liver, E

He’s probably been their best pitcher this year, and he shut down the Cubs in June in Pittsburgh.

I’ll take it, hope the Padres hang on and pick up ground on everybody today.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 16, 2009 5:07 PM CDT up reply actions

He is 7-7

with a 4+ era.

He has been decent recently – yes, but the team for the last two days have been scoring with RISP.

Something they did not do much recently.

In spite of this pitcher – I’d still like the Cubs chances in this one game.

by The E-Man on Aug 16, 2009 5:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought he was 10-8

Regardless, it’s possible Harden’s start would have been wasted if they had to begin, then stop the game. At least with rosters expanded in September, a doubleheader isn’t as daunting.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 16, 2009 5:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep - SORRY

I think perhaps you’re 10-8 – era about what I said.

I guess we could say 10-8 is like a 20 game winner with the Bucs – right Bruce?

HAHA

could you imagine how the “fans” in Pitt. feel??

Geez!

I mean at least they have the Steelers to pick up the slack – but the team is only an investment, period, for the owner group.

by The E-Man on Aug 16, 2009 5:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Don't forget the Penguins

That the other two teams in town are champions in their respective sports really makes the Bucs even more irrelevant in Pittsburgh. It’s a real shame, considering the history of the franchise and how nice PNC Park is.

This delay was handled horribly...

I sat in the bleachers from 11:20 til they called it, what a joke! It seems like they just kept people there to rake in money for the concessions. Anyway enough venting, they announced that we were to go to Cubs.com to get the rainout tickets. There is nothing on the site at this time. I assume this is due to them not having a date scheduled.
