Kappy and my favorite Hippy
I'm usually able to laugh off kiss ass local media, but Dave Kaplan and Paul Sullivan really got me going. Maybe it's just the frustration of this season, but what I heard and read late this week made me sick. I caught Ryan Theriot's weekly visit on sportscentral a couple of days ago. Now I know he's a weekly guest and I don't expect Kaplan to get in his face, but the 15 monologue The Riot gave on all the injuries and bad luck this team has encounterd was sickening. Everyone is well aware of the injuries, we don't need Cubs players and management keep reminding us. Kaplan allowed Theriot to continue until I think he was out of breathe then asked him about Bob Brenley's comments during the Rockies game were lack of hustle almost cost the Cubs a run. Kaplan acted as if he was embarrassed to even ask the question and showed zero support to Brenly. I swear and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't know if i was listening to Ryan Theriot or Kent Mercker. All Brenly was saying was run hard for 90 feet. Not a big deal, he wasn't taking a cheap shot. If he's going to be critical of Soriano for not hustling he has to do the same to the golden boy. I was really disappointed in the response by one of the players I thought was a stand-up guy on this team........I apologize for rambling. Real quick Paul Sullivan wrote over the weekend again that Jim Hendry's hands were tied during the trade deadline by the unknown ownership situations. Again Hendry tied his own hands by his decision making. Whoever owns this team has been very open to letting Hendry spend freely. Come on Sully you know thats the truth. Hendry is coming off back to back division titles, he can stand on his own. He doesn't need you making excuses for him.

Dave Kaplan
should just go sit down somewhere and shut up, or just leave go away. I cant stand the guy, I turn the channel everytime he comes on TV

I respect Kaplan but he's starting to wear thin of me. The fact that Stoney is his little pony is a little annoying.
I enjoy his interviews though. As for Hendry, I completely agree.
COOL BEANS!
Link?
Was the Theriot interview archived? I’d love to listen to it before I post a response.
Kaplan is a hack.
When you call into his radio show with an opposing view, you are screened out.
or screamed at. I caught a bit of his show after the game the other day
and it was hard to listen to.
Eh.
I caught it, too. They had a bunch of crackpots calling in.
Kaplan isn’t as knowledgeable as he thinks he is, but I agreed with the yelling.

Kaplan is so bad at what he does that its sad
His Zambrano thing the other week was bad. No matter your view on Z, I think we all agree that his argument was flawed, and he intentionally messed up stats.
His Milton Bradley crusade this season is also embarrassing, as were his antics during the last month of last season.
To top it all off, he’s so far up Steve Stone’s butt, that I think they are one brain, saying things out of the two mouths.
Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.

Agreed.
Kap’s blogpost calling for Big Z’s release/trade was one of the most irrational/embarrasing things I’ve read in a long, long time.
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.
The minute you type "I apologize for rambling"
is the moment you need to consider editing for clarity or not posting at all.
just sayin’
That said, the two media members you criticize have proven themselves to be the Neifi Perez and Aaron Miles of Chicago Media. What incriminating photos, and of whom, could they possess to keep them in their positions?
I just shake my head and roll my eyes at anything having to do with Paul Sullivan anymore. The optimist in me thinks he’s probably a decent guy, but the way he handles his position is just arrogant and obnoxious. And it shows in his reporting.
WOXY.com - The Future of Rock and Roll
First off
Kaplan is a corporate butt-kisser. He’ll prostitute himself into doing whatever is requested of him. And part of that problem is when teams are owners of the media outlet covering said teams. You will NEVER get thoughtful and complete coverage in this format.
Second, not only is Kaplan a butt-kisser, he knows nothing about running an interview. Of course, the point was to get out there all the “bad” things going on but he didn’t do anything to steer the conversation. That’s where a good interviewer stands out.
I’m a bit disappointed in Theriot, I’d hoped he wouldn’t continue on the course set out for him but he did.
On Sullivan, well that’s what happens when your employer has been hemmoraging cash for several years now. You get a complete idiot like Sullivan covering your team. I’m not sure if he’s totally inept or just cannot formulate a good baseball thought and get it out of his mouth. It’s too bad Plesac left CSN (actually who could blame him) but he actually got my attention and kept my attention. I always thought he was pretty good covering the Cubs; though in a different capacity than Sullivan or Kaplan.
Just win the next game...!
I didn't see the interview nor read the column...
…Yes, Theriot’s “getaway day” and “Blahs” excuses are lame. The team’s “getaway day” excuse for a couple of stinkers gives me a bit more reason to question whether thy will show up IF they make the playoffs. But IF they make the playoffs it could also be viewed as a new start and perhaps a chance to approach the games with energy, motivation, and hustle.
Injuries can be a legitimate reason for poor play, it depends on who gets injured, timing, duration and quality of depth. The Cubs were caught with their pants down earlier in the season in terms of quality of depth, but I think Hendry has done a nice job of making corrections. This team should be able to survive Aramis being out right now but it needs slugging from guys like Soriano and MB to do that. Unfortunately that hasn’t happened, at least not consistently. In short, I don’t view injuries as an excuse but some times they are a legitimate reason for under-performing.
Regarding Sullivan’s comments on Hendry being tied now. That seems to be a plausible reality to me. New owners lining up to get approved don’t want any more payroll excursions. If the economy hadn’t collapsed I don’t think the new owners would be taking a hard line on costs (assuming that they are). There’s a legitimate criticism of back loading some contracts, but I don’t see that affecting decisions to take on more payroll at the deadline so much as the new owners wanting salary held. Now, if the Cubs really wanted to move Soriano, Dome, Bradley, fill in the blank but were thwarted because of the terms then perhaps there’s more to it? But I seriously doubt that was considered.
The Cubs may not have added payroll because of concerns raised y the incoming owners, but otherwise I think Hendry has decided that the team he has is talented enough to get the job done. I think he’s right, but the players have to actually do it now. It may turn out to be a somewhat unlucky year for the Cubs. However, with guys getting older I wouldn’t just expect a return to glory days next season.
on CTL Kaplan
seems to be more anti-Cub than St Louis. Soriano can hit three Grand Slams in one game, and Kaplan will zone in on a defensive mishap from the night before.
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
Yeah Kaplan hates
Soriano. I’ve also noticed he seems to be more Sox favorable than the Cubs.
I use to think Kaplan was ok when he first started on CTL but now I think he’s awful. I hate that he tells guests on CTL that they are couldn’t be more wrong when they disagree with him. He slobbers all over himself whe he has Stone on the show.

I Can Hear Kaplan More Now....
because we are on the back end of summer with the sun is going down earlier in the evening, so I can pick up WGN radio at an earlier hour now. Kaplan does hate Soriano. I merely dislike Sori. I believe Kaplan says 10 negative things about Sori for every positive thing. Sori hasn’t played well this season, but he shouldn’t be the “whipping boy” for the team.

More Sox favorable?
No…He is a HUGE Cubs fan. Not a Sox fan.

I know he's a Cub fan
but he gushes over the Sox on CTL. He belittles the Cubs a lot on that show.

exactly
it is amazing how much he rips into the Cubs, no matter what happens. he looks for excuses to deflate anything the Cubs do
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
I don't think a single Cubs fan took last season worse
than Kaplan. He was convinced that the Cubs were winning the World Series, to the point where he spent September hanging up on anyone who said otherwise. Then after game 2 he basically cried on the radio postgame and ever since has been brutally critical.
Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.
I am not questions his fanfare
whatever his reason, it is just making excuses. If we all will get on BLou for how he posts, why give Kaplan a pass for being just as negaitve about players?
any chance Blou is Kaplan???
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
And by "fanfare" you mean "fandom."

exactly
don’t know how i SNAFU’d that one so well
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
If only
Dave Kaplan were as good at his job as the players he constantly harps on are at theirs… .
not surprising
but i disagree with most people here. i love kaplan – i think he’s fantastic on CTL and i enjoy his postgame shows on 720 as well. with regard to calcalender’s comment, is soriano really that good at his “job”? he’s a poor outfielder, a mindless base runner and a one dimensional hitter having a below average season at the plate. i love the cubs. kaplan, i guarantee you, loves the cubs. if we fail to criticize the things/people we love when they deserve it, we are only contributing to failure.
I'm going to make sure I criticize Kaplan because I don't want to contribute to the failure of his ability to professionally cover the Cubs.

there is nothing wrong with being critical of the team
but to look for the negatives alone, is my lone problem. As i said above, Soriano could have a monster game, and Kaplan will go back to prior games to find a way to continue to rip him
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
being critical
is one thing. Kaplan fails to be critical beyond “Soriano sucks what a HUGE mistake” or “Bradley sucks, I miss DeRosa”
That kind of critique I can find on Cubs.com comment threads or from the kind of people who call into his show.
i agree with that
my reply was to Unger saying I agree its good to be critical, but there is a difference between attacking specific people no matter what they do each day.
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
The problem with Kaplan
is that he plays favorites and is not objective.
He writes his article about Zambrano being the most overpaid player in the game, yet won’t even consider that Dempster is probably more overpaid than Z.
He ripped Bradley for forgetting how many outs there were, but doesn’t criticize Theriot about his lazy baserunning.
He writes an article about how Gregg cannot be allowed to continue to close, yet his year is similar to that of his boy Kerry Wood last year.
He has a problem with over-priced players who are flawed, yet by all accounts describes him perfectly.
I agree with much of what you wrote
And it’s a good point about him playing favorites.
However, Wood had a MUCH better year in 2008 than Gregg is having this year.

agreed about dempster being equally if not more overpaid
and perhaps kaplan does play favorites, but it’s hard not to as a fan – i do it all the time. i know – journalists aren’t supposed to but i see kaplan’s role on both ctl and the postgame shows as more fan/moderator than journalist. on the various teams i root for, there are players who i’m more likely to get irritated with when they do something lazy or mindless whether it be because of frustration over their undeserved contract, what i see as being a bad attitude in the past, or for any number of other reasons. kaplan makes no secret of the fact that he’s a huge cubs fan. i love his energy, i find him likable, and i’m willing to look past the other stuff. some people aren’t clearly. that’s fine.

so give Kaplan a pass to be negative
means you will give BLou one as well?
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
I truly didn’t mean this to be a hate Kaplan post. He is what he is. We all know he’s a big a Cub fan as any of us…and a bit of a jock sniffer. What I really wanted to harp on was my disappointment with Theriot’s comments.
by Comfortably Numb on Aug 17, 2009 7:49 PM CDT reply actions
Theriot's comments were about what you'd expect from a player
on a team that is playing well below expectations. What really bothers me is that if Milton Bradley had made the same comments, fans and media would have been all over him. That sounds like I’m playing a race card. I don’t mean to, and I’m Caucasian, but he would not have gotten away with it like Theriot did. It reminds me of Wittenmyer’s column earlier this season when he quoted former players who said the bleacher fans could get racial in their taunts at players they didn’t like.
I have to comment on Kaplan. I was surprised he asked about the hustle question to Theriot. But I wasn’t surprised he didn’t pursue it. He has no credibility in interviewing Theriot. He has established himself as his friend, not as a reporter, which means you’re not going to hear anything meaningful. Kaplan is more interested in selling his wife’s pizza than being interesting.
