Exactly!
Linebrink was staked to a 3 run lead. Gets 2 outs then walks the next two batters then serves up a mamoth blast, nearly to the concourse in RF.

Would have been worth it
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
If we'd been willing to trade prospects in the past, we'd be infinitely better off.
You know, when the Pirates were selling the farm, someone got Jason Bay. Someone got Nate McLouth. Someone got Nyjer Morgan.
We got Grabow and Gorz. Not terrible…. but considering that Hendry only does one thing well – trading with Pittsburgh – I would have liked to have gone for the brass ring.
Of course, Hendry held on to Hill and Pie like grim death…. until he got distracted by the next shiny object and moved them all as pawns in his grand scheme to add Aaron Heilman.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
I would say...
that each player should be assessed differently. Many players never do find success, but there are also those who turn into quality players.
Failed scouting reports or whatever led to the disastrous decision to keep Pie so long shouldn’t really determine how we handle a different player.
This season IS over. -BLou 6/30/09
Well, yeah. Those are truisms.
What I’m saying is that you occasionally have to part with a prospect who your scouts like, in order to land superstar MLB players.
Take Detroit, for instance. They traded Maybin and Miller for Miggy Cabrera – I don’t think they’re particularly upset about it. Even Boston, trading Hanley for Beckett — you have to give something to get something.
The Cubs would rather make deals around the margins, and try to get “serviceable” players to fill the gaps.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
I would tend to think...
that it is more of an indictment of the scouting department (as well as the input of both Lou and JH) rather than a reluctance to trade talent. There have been a few exceptions to that trend (Hill to PITT) and Rich Hill did have one quality year.
This season IS over. -BLou 6/30/09

by cowsarecool220 on Aug 18, 2009 12:32 AM CDT up reply actions
Yes - he'll be 20 in 10 days.
And “pretty well” is exactly what he’s done. He had some torrid streaks in the midwest league, and he’s flat-out sucked in Daytona.
All in all, his Midwest league stats are the first time that we could say “that’s the kind of performance I’d hoped for”, and even then it wasn’t overwhelming – he’s more or less on par with what Kyler Burke has posted for the same Peoria team.
And no one would be crying if we traded Kyler in a deal for Peavy or Bell.

Pathetic 9th
Bradley struck out with the insurance run on base and Gregg decided to pitch behind every hitter (except González) and give up the game to the worse team in the West.
Lou was so out of the loop that he made a visit to the 3rd base line to order an intentional walk.
Hendry, this is the team you made up. Pathetic.
I think Lou went out there to kill Gregg

Lou, here is your lineup, use it
1. Fukudome, cf
2. Bradley, rf
3. Lee, 1b
4. Ramirez, 3b
5. Soto, c
6. Soriano, lf
7. Baker, 2b
8. Theriot, ss
9. Pitcher
Don’t use Sam Fuld as a pinch-hitter, or if you do, immediately insert him into left field to play defense.
Play Koyie Hill more than once a week. There’s a reason the club is something like 10 games over .500 when he starts.
Put Aaron Miles at the far end of the bench and use him only as a pinch-hitter after all starting pitchers have already been used to pinch-hit.
Flip the roles of Kevin Gregg and Angel Guzman.
That’s just what I would do if I was managing the Cubs.
Clearly it’s just common sense, but how can Lou/Jim/anybody else in the Cubs front office not see that?

Gregg would be mediocre, Heilmann would suck and Miles is garbage. But these arent much of predictions, more of well known and documented facts
It's one thing
to predict the performance of individual players, but anyone telling you they thought the Cubs would play like they have as a unit is, like I said above, lying.
I figured they would take the division

This team was horrifically designed, and we’re seeing the natural outcome of Hendry’s horrendous 2008 offseason.

all due respect, but there were people here and there
who were dumbfounded by the moves Hendry made, and wondered if we didn’t actually downgrade. Of course that sounds like hindsight now, and I can’t say “I called it” but I was uneasy with the makeup of this team, and certainly wondered if this might happen

That applies to "chemistry". "Leadership" is different.
I don’t think that you need to have a bunch of guys who get along to win.
However, I think that a team comprised entirely of “followers” and complementary players will fail, every time. You need alpha personalities to galvanize a team to win in team sports.

Did you ever notice that a lack of real quality exists throughout the Tribune company?
Listen to the people they have on the radio. Look at the people they have let go from the newspaper and have kept. Listen to Pat and Ron. Whatever product the company puts out is overall mediocre. We see the same results on the ballfield. I think it must be some kind of corporate philosophy. I have been waiting for an ownership change for years. I can’t wait for it to finally happen. Maybe someone else will come in and try for quality. Maybe you didn’t mean that when you wrote your comment, but I think it applies to the whole corporation, Cubs included.

Perhaps I’ve been wrong to blindly folow the traditions and superstitions of past centuries. Maybe we GMs should test these assumptions analytically, through experimentation, studies of empirical results of the last 100 years of baseball, and a “scientific method”. Well allow me to retort.
First off, that post is, word for word, from Steve Martin’s “Theodoric of York, Medieval Barber” SNL sketch. For crying out loud.
Secondly, “one of the best GMs in the game”. Seriously? An argument can be made that he is not in the bottom 5… I suppose…. but how can you explain $130+M for this offense? For this roster?
Hendry is going to be fired at the end of this year, and deservedly so. The Cubs will have to spend the next 5 years paying for his mistakes. His era is over, but the hangover is going to SUCK.

This franchise … I’m wondering if this job is too big for anybody to handle.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 18, 2009 1:54 AM CDT up reply actions
I'm really not seeing it.
For instance, I think he would have been run out of New York or Boston on a rail.
I think that, once again, it gets back to what the fanbase is willing to accept. If you posit that we should be happy with winning the central on occasion and hoping to get lucky in the playoffs, then sure, Hendry has done what is necessary. It helps that the playing field is uneven, and he can outspend his competition by a factor of 5, but that’s neither here nor there.
If the goal is to build a winning organization, Hendry has failed rather spectacularly. The series of free agent busts Hendry has fallen into have resulted in relatively weak 25-man rosters throughout Hendry’s tenure (relative to his peers in payroll), and will seriously hamstring Hendry’s successor over the next 5 years.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 18, 2009 12:32 AM CDT up reply actions
Because Lou sent Gregg out there
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
Gregg didn't do his job
That’s not on Lou. I wouldn’t be surprised if Gregg gets a “break” from closing for a while, though.

You asked for his explanation
And I gave it to you. Doesn’t change the fact that Lou is a slow learner.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
That's not a good explanation
Now, when Gregg blew the save the last game in Florida, I did blame Lou for that. Gregg had just thrown 40-something pitches the night before. He didn’t need to come in.
Tonight? Yeah, Gregg was the main culprit. But drive in a few of those runs earlier and that ninth inning probably plays out differently.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 18, 2009 12:37 AM CDT up reply actions
it's the fact that lou has seen him blown big saves.

Gregg is your closer and that is who you use. Had he gotten the third F*^%$$ing out when he was supposed to we would not be having this discussion so yes poor line up construction is on Lou, acting like a zoned out old man is on Lou but using Gregg is not his fault

Another
ignorant comment. Back to back division titles, 3 in 6 years, for a franchise that was associated with losing. Comments like this make me laugh.
by serbianking33 on Aug 18, 2009 1:30 AM CDT up reply actions
Give any poster on this board $130M annually
…and let their teams perform in the last 6 NL Central races, and you’ll see 3 division titles.
Hopefully, said poster won’t puss out on the Carlos Beltran pursuit, and then overcompensate by giving Alfonso Soriano $138 million dollars for his age 31-38 seasons.
Honestly, a great deal of Hendry’s moves seem to have been made on blind faith. Like the naked assumption that Alfonso Soriano could play CF, because he “looks like” he could be a centerfielder. Or the assumption that Kevin Gregg could be an effective closer, because after all, he had 29 saves once.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
Beltran
certainly has led the Mets to the promised land, hasn’t he?
Thinking before you post is a vital part of the Internet process.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 18, 2009 1:41 AM CDT up reply actions
Oh, please
He was having a good year this year until he got hurt, but I wouldn’t call what he’s done in NY “spectacular.”
The only spectacular thing about the Mets has been how spectacularly their seasons have imploded the last three years.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 18, 2009 1:57 AM CDT up reply actions
Take another look at those stats.
What is his overall OPS with the Mets? .900?
His first year with the Mets was mediocre. He had those leg issues.
Since then, OPS+ of 150, 126, 129, and 150. That’s spectacular by any standard. A few more years like that and you start calling someone a Hall of Famer.
Heck, a few 150 OPS+ years can get a corner OF into the Hall. For a CF, it’s even more rare.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
And the bottom line is
the Mets haven’ t even made the playoffs. By your same standard, he and the rest of the team suck and Minaya is the worst GM in baseball.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 18, 2009 2:14 AM CDT up reply actions
How quickly you forget - The Mets made the NLCS in 2006.
And Beltran was pretty valiant in that series loss to the Cardinals, with an OPS over 1.000.
Beltran is objectively better than Alfonso Soriano at every single skill in baseball. He is a better contact hitter, a better power hitter, a dramatically better fielder at a more valuable position, and a better baserunner.
What, pray tell, is my “standard” for GM performance? I wasn’t aware that I’d set one. I certainly wouldn’t base it entirely upon winning playoff series.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
True, that, about 2006
And the last three years, they’ve done squat, and done it in a way that makes the Cubs’ el foldos look amateurish by comparison.
Your standard appears to be exactly that, how you do in the postseason. Are you going to tell me Minaya is a better GM than Hendry is?
by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 18, 2009 3:01 AM CDT up reply actions
Let's look at that, too
In 06, the mets lost game 7 of the nlcs. The Cubs were horrific.
In 07 and 08, the cubs got swept out of the nlds, while th mets got edged out by the phils. In 07, the cubs were helped by winning a terrible division.
This year, the mets lost essentially every player on their team. And, in all likelihood, both teams will miss the playoffs.
In the last 4 years, it’s advantage mets. Even with the playoff misses in 07-08. It’s cold comfort to point to our zero playoff wins as evidence of superiority.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
So I guess
all the Cubs’ injuries this year are some hallucination I’m having? If you’re going to excuse the Mets for their injuries, than you’ve got to excuse the Cubs for theirs, too.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 18, 2009 3:31 AM CDT up reply actions
It's not even remotely similar.
The Mets injury situation has been an order of magnitude worse.
Wright, Reyes, Delgado, Beltran, Castillo, Putz, and that’s just off the top of my head.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
I'm still wondering what Hendry saw in him.
I’m sure that, last offseason, the last time Hendry had seen Gregg was when Daryle Ward hit an 8th inning 500-foot 3-run shot off of him.
What caught Hendry’s eye there? Gregg had just lost the set-up role for the Marlins.
“yes sir, that’s my closer! go get him!”
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
I know!
I wonder if Carlos was supposed to be the closer and Gregg was the backup plan? If not, then Hendry is a bigger idiot than I ever thought.
"He can't hit, he can't field, he can't run—all he can do is beat you."

He hasn't been fine, can't get the death blow, the final strike, that good closers can.
His ERA reflects his crappiness.
"He can't hit, he can't field, he can't run—all he can do is beat you."
He hasn't been fine the last two weeks or so, no doubt
And if ERAs reflect crappiness, Wood is in that boat, too. Lidge, too, for that mater.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 18, 2009 1:30 AM CDT up reply actions
He's been pretty lousy.
I’ll preface this by saying that, with few exceptions, most relievers can perform adequately in the 9th. Billy Beane learned this, and spent half a decade creating “closers” from thin air and then trading them for legitimate assets.
That being said – 23/29 in save opportunities, the most HR allowed for all closers, 28 ER in 56 IP.
There just really isn’t a lot to point to as evidence of him being “fine”, even prior to the FLA series.
Especially with the gutpunch losses he’s endured this year. The Astros meltdown. The Tigers walkoff. It’s pretty much been a big bag of hurt all year.

Methinks Cubs fans have become too whiny for their own good.

He wouldn't be doing better either.
Last year he did what Gregg did tonight, several times.

Well crap
Blou and krummy, it sure looks like you guys were right.
Cubs will win 79 to 83 games. Season has been over for weeks. St. Louis will eventually run away with this division. And you can print it. BLou (7/21/09)

Have I mentioned before...
I hate the fuckin’ Padres?
And, just as i say this….my PC is acting up…..The Kevin Gregg show has to end. I’ve been trying to post for 15 mins….Lou has beaten me.
It’s such a joy to leave Petco Park on yet, another — another dark night in San Diego.
Just shoot me, stop me from going.

Just got back from the game...
There aren’t words to describe that one. Don’t say anything, just don’t say anything.
That had to be one of the worst “closer” meltdowns I have ever seen, on TV or in person.

I was thinking of you.
My sympathies.

Yeah, no kidding
It was bad enough having to listen to it, let alone watch it.
Interesting two days. Yesterday the Padres closer can’t get the save against the Cardinals, and tonight the Padres win a game the exact same way. If you’re looking at it dispassionately, I guess that’s another example of why baseball is a great game
But, from my vantage point right now, it sucks.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 18, 2009 1:13 AM CDT up reply actions
It was worst being there.
Two rows behind me were Padres fans, one of whom was wearing a “Cubs suck” t-shirt. During the ninth inning, they were trying to provoke me … I ignored them as much as I could.

'Cubs suck' -- how clever
I hope PETCO was at least worth the visit.

Petco's fine.
The fans are horrible.

Then, there's always
the chants of “100 more years” when you leave. I never this shit in LA after Cubs losses.

I actually didn't hear those ... I left very quickly after Gregg blew the save (and his job).

I didn't even notice
“hear” was missing, to be honest.
Sounds like quite the baseball inferiority complex in America’s Finest City.

America’s Finest City.
st louis?
the cubs lineup needs moar LIND and HALLIDAY

Well, that just made me
spit up my Cheerio-s. :) STL does have a big inferiority complex, too.
Funny, when the Cubs were on their big run last season, razzing Cardinals fans was the last thing on my mind. Now, it seems Cardinals fans have nothing better to do than razz Cubs fans. Pathetic.

4 runs after 2 outs
It’s pretty gruesome, but it’s just another Cubs game in San Diego. I’ve seen it before.

I'm really glad I couldn't see it.
Recipe for Disaster;
C'mon Cubs, hurry up and blow this so I can relax.

Well, the Cubs will have a new closer, it appears
I suspect it’ll be Guzman. Which is fine with me.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 18, 2009 1:11 AM CDT reply actions
No word yet on that.
After what I saw tonight, anyone would be better than Gregg.

Funny thing is if Hendry has signed Hoffman
and let Wood go , there would have been howls of anger.

There would be howls of anger
no matter what, Jess.
I’m convinced Cubs fans are perpetually angry anymore. I understand it, but it certainly helps take the joy out of watching baseball.

howls of anger over signing Hoffman?
letting Wood go, sure I understand how that would set some folks off (and it did). But I don’t see how signing Hoffman would have been greeted with jeers and howls.
Sure, at the time, a case could have been made that Hoffman might be past his prime – I seem to recall him getting knocked around pretty good a few times last year when he was still with the Padres. But the guy’s a sure-fire HOFer and the all-time saves leader. Something to be said for having that pedigree on your staff. Worse case scenario – again, at the time – would have been yeah, he doesn’t quite have it anymore but he can help groom Marmol.

Well, good night everyone.
I insist, NBF, that to me, the season ended a week ago in Denver. However, I commend you for keeping the faith. I just won’t lose more time watching these chokers at such a late hour. At least I used up some time to pay off some bills while the suckers “played”.
Well, you were productive, at least
The season still isn’t over, not by a long shot. But they can’t afford to lose many more like this one.
Good night.

Gregg: I believe in my stuff
According to theChicago Tribune.
Boy, I sure wish I had some of what he is taking.
