The way we talk to each other on BCB
Al adresses this topic far too often as I see it. I am not sure how many subsribers there are, who posts most often, or whom the repeat offenders are. The personal attacks on each other are happening too often. The thing about text is that you can't read tonality. Statements may be percieved as an insult but may not have been meant as one then an insult is fired off in return. I read a lot of the posts and I can see how these attacks get started. I also see how they can be avoided. I am not sure why some people have to call other people names or who benefits from that. I think we all need to step back and realize that we are all on the same team. We all want the Cubs to win now and we all get frustrated in our own ways. I have posted things out here that people disagree with just as I have disagreed with others. This is one of the major benefits of this site. You are getting information (Facts and opinions) from a bunch of people. The information is yours to apply however you like. In my opinion, It's great to get other perspectives. I have learned a ton about the Cubs and the game of baseball from you guys as this site is fantastic. There are times where I take a day or two off from this site until things cool down as it is just not enjoyable to read the insults being posted. We all have very different levels of knowlege of the Cubs and especially the game of baseball. If you read something that seems ridiclous consider from where it may be coming. If someone insults you simply ignore it. I will get off my soapbox now. Thanks for reading.

Well said 1060...
…and I echo your sentiments. I understand that the nature of posting and texting often leads to people acting in a much more aggressive way than they probably would if they were talking to someone face to face but it still never hurts to occasionally remind everyone that, after all, civility, even in disagreement, is not a bad way to go.

I think this is unnecessary
Many of the people who engage in personal attacks do so just for the sport of it. You can’t tell people like that to be respectful of their fellow commenters or use a civilized tone, its not why they’re here. All you can do is ignore them and not add legitimacy to their boorishness by giving it a response. IMO, anyway.

Well said, 1060, bluek and Orval
The big key is that one cannot read tonality.
Some do engage in attacks just for the sport; others have their “sacred cows” for who that if any sleight at all is perceived, it becomes a holy war.
The bottom line is, we’re all responsible for how we react to what others say. Sometimes I am better at that than other times . . . .

sadly this type of post seems to be done
every 3 months give or take. I did one about 3 months ago in fact, and there may have been one more since then….
The result is:
1. Group A comment about how well written the post is and they agree wit it
2. Group B refuse to stop the bashing and insults, and continue to cause havoc while ignoring the post. calling for peace.
I agree with what is stated above, just pointing out the sad facts of it and what to expect as a result.

I remember, however I like 1060's take.
There are a number of people here who enjoy the negative and stirring up trouble. Orval’s right that they can’t be policed or police themselves as they enjoy the reaction too much.
As for the rest of us, a kind reminder to pay attention to tone and how others will perceive it is fair.
I also like the fact the comments aren’t divisive and are constructive.

Good point also about comments being constructive
I, personally, don’t come on here to get into confrontations with people. At the same time, I like hearing other points of view. I’m not deluded enough about my own “expertise” to believe that I can’t sometimes be enlightened by an intelligent, opposing argument..
Unfortunately,it’s a fact of life that a lot of people would rather just take positions, provoke and then attack. At times like that it’s VERY good advice to ignore them and move on.

It's a good post, and those that love to insult people personally to make a point
will not only refuse to stop bashing but most won’t read it at all. I think to read this post you have to be concerned at least a little about other people. I came to this site because of the negativity of other Cub sites…both against the the club and each other. I’m glad to hear there are people on the site worried about arguments degrading to personal attacks because I don’t think there are but one or two people on any site that would want that to happen or stay after it became very commonplace.

I agree with the OP...
As a relative newcomer to BCB I’ve for the most part enjoyed the Game Threads, Al’s previews and wrap-ups, and the comments. I often learn something new, whether it be about sabermetrics, our farm team, or baseball history. I also appreciate that most people here have a great sense of humour and I can usually find something that cracks me up everyday.
That being said there does some to be a certain level of vitriol in some threads that I find hard to understand. I’ve browsed around quite a few other teams’ SB Nation blogs, usually our NL opponents to get a different take on the game, and some AL teams’ sites as well. On the one hand there’s almost no fan base that matches the level of participation and baseball analysis on BCB, and we should be proud of that. On the other hand I don’t think any other site “eats their own” as much as we do by insulting fellow fans (except for maybe the Yankees and Red Sox sites, I haven’t felt the need to check theirs out).
I’m happy that this site goes deeper than just “what a play!” or “gee, tough out there” like certain other sites (e.g. the Marlins’ FishStripes – go check out a game thread there if you’re bored!). I just could do without the amateur vitriol, although maybe it comes with the territory – I don’t know.

As someone who has been maybe a little more nasty than usual lately
I think we all have to sometimes take a break from the site when we’re frustrated. It’s a frustrating year at times and it’s really easy to be nasty to someone behind a computer screen.
Perhaps we should read what we write and then push send. I’m included in this recommendation too. It would make a much better experience for everyone IMO.

I like to try to chime in with unique, off the wall observations, and attempts at humor or “thinking out of the box” — but on so many occasions, I have been put down so harshly — and for no apparent reason — that I totally hold back now 70-80% of what I’d like to chip in with. I find this to be an interesting post....
and I could write volumes about some of the things I’ve seen and endured here but I’ll try to keep it fairly short…and that’s hard for me to do.
I appreciate this post because it gives me the opportunity to say a few things about the behavior of some of the folks here.
As a Cardinal fan, I expect a little bashing when I post or comment, but I expect it to be all in good fun. Way too often it becomes venomous at the onset, and I know it’s because I’m a Cards fan. For the most part I try to ignore it but one can only tolerate so much of it.
I don’t want this comment to sound like it’s all about me. It’s not! It’s about those who exhibit such childish, immature, self serving, boorish, attention seeking, peace disturbing and downright rude behavior. It’s a blight.
What’s also interesting are some of the comments to this post from some of those very people. “people who live in glass houses…………”
Some of them think they’re intellectually superior and their very words show just the opposite. How smart are they really if they can’t see that?
If someone walks into a room waving a white flag and immediately gets knocked to the floor it doesn’t say much for the group of folks around him…especially when no one helps him up off the floor. What that does is intimidate not just the one on the floor but everybody in the room. Not enough folks standing up to the bully(s).
Rodney King had it right when he said “Can’t we all just get along?”
Let’s all go talk some baseball…..and get along!

I mean, for the nice folks, you’re preaching to the choir. They’ll agree whole-heartedly, and continue not attacking each other.
For the aggressive folks, they’ll wonder who called the waaahmbulance and keep doing what they do. Maybe you think you’ll trigger an epiphany and they’ll discover the error of their ways, but in reality, they’re trying to provoke and the only way to stop it is to just ignore them. If nobody takes the troll bait, they’ll eventually stop. No amount of self-important preaching will make them stop.
