Who do you think would take over the closer role, if Gregg is no longer the closer? Lou says "They all end the same way with a home run ball." It really does seem that way when Gregg fails to Close.

Angel Guzman seems to be the prime candidate

Given Marmol’s problems with walks this year, Guzman may have to step up.

And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.

Marmol is too wild...

Guzman could be a good candidate, but he can also lose the zone at times. I’m afraid at this point it’s just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Someday we'll go all the way...

Too little

too late.

Should have been done after Florida. Or – even his 9th-inning meltdown in Atlanta.

Better yet, pea-brained Hendry never should have signed the guy in the first place (not that I believe Woody was the answer, per se, either).

What a disaster.

OR THE PATHETIC

pitching in Detroit in June . The Cubs should have taken care of this issue long ago . They let it fester now they have a mess .Can’t wait for the sale to be inked .

or Font not hitting

and MB not hitting, and Rami/Soto.Lee/Zambrano/Lilly/Dempster being hurt, there are a lot of reasons, hanging this 100% on Gregg is not fair

Has to be Guzman.

I think Guzman will get the first shot.

I wonder if Lou will try a bp by committee with Guz, Marmol, and Grabow? See if one can seize the opportunity.

In the meantime, the rotation should allow Lou to have fresh arms more often for the 8/9 innings. Hopefully, Gorz can be the mid-game inning eater that Heilman struggled with. Combine him with Marshall and have Gregg for spot setup duty to get the game to the committee.

Some people say the glass is half empty, some say half full. I say, are you going to drink that?

I want to say Guzman

But I think Lou will insert Marmol.

Closer by committee...

Sadly, I don’t think there is a prime candidate on the team. At the end of last year, I would have said Marmol but seeing him pitch this year has changed my mind. I think Lou can go with a committee of Guzman and Grabow depending on the matchups with a little Marmol sprinkled in there if he’s feeling like playing some Russian Roulette.

"Closer by committee"...

… never works. Relievers do best when they have defined roles, rather than “pick me today”.

Teams that have tried this have always gone back to a defined closer.

Yup...

Yeah, I know it never works but I just don’t know if there is anyone on the roster that I would be comfortable with as being the defined closer.

Next year goal #1

They need to sign a FA closer then worry about 2B.

I won’t even ask right now, but who’s on the market? Maybe Wagner will be worth the risk?

Sean Marshall for closer

LOL

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.
