Len n' Bob...

….make an interesting point: the Cubs are built around the homerun, and thus struggle at HR-killing PetCo.

Should we have more contact/speed guys in the lineup? I know I would — I have always preferred speed to power.

by LeSaboteur on Aug 18, 2009 9:04 PM CDT reply actions

I don't know

I think we’re supposed to be built around the home run, but I don’t think we actually have that sort of power hitting on the team. But yes, I would like to see more speed and contact hitters.

It never gets to be easy

by chitownhawkeye on Aug 18, 2009 9:07 PM CDT up reply actions

it is not a surprise how to hit in the damp air of Petco or even Dodgers Stadium.

(of course we did lose to a bomb in the bottom of the 9th)

Our guys did hit lots of line drives last night. The Padres just ran them down.

I'd prefer a team built on defense

with lots of speed.

But I’m cheering for the wrong team if I want that to ever happen.

by Allie on Aug 18, 2009 9:08 PM CDT up reply actions

I think last year

we were more built around OBP, being patient and drawing walks. I think the Cubs were hoping to be that way this year, but hasn’t worked out so well.

Plus, aren’t we one of the lowest HR totals in the NL? I might be completely wrong.

I could've sworn I saw a stat during the Philly series

that we’ve scored the second highest % of runs via the HR. (Second only to Philly)

But I can’t remember where I saw that or how they found it.

by Allie on Aug 18, 2009 9:17 PM CDT up reply actions

I remember that...

…stat.

I still think having a few more guys with good contact numbers would be a nice thing to have to plug around the long ballers.

Yay Riots' back

and Marmol as a closer is going to be hell to watch but I think high leverage situations are the best place to put him. Rather have his blowups cost the Cubs a close game than one that wasn’t.

Well, not to be argumentative

but, if the team has a really bad bullpen, it could be good to get the starter to throw 25 pitches an inning.

I agree

And there’s a correlation between throwing more pitches and losing. But there’s a much stronger correlation between the team that scores more runs and winning.

hindsight is 20/20

but i really believe the cubs need to be more aggressive on the basepaths. Last year you could wait for the big hit, this year you have to try to score guys whenever you can. There would have been a play, but it would have taken a good throw.

if Dome hits that ball past the pitcher (and back up the middle where it was going without a decent snag by the pitcher) you’re not complaining.

You’re confusing results with the proper call. Swinging a pitch and hitting it hard is the goal. What happens after it leaves your bat is out of your hands.

now that's a situation where you should dive

2 outs, only runner on base is in scoring position anyway. sadly, though, I don’t think i’ve ever seen sori dive for a ball.

Unreal

Chopper off the plate…RBI groundout….broken bat flare to LF…broken bat flare to CF…one after another after another after another.

Who needs a stinkin' tag line? What are they for anyway?

The money is gone......

Why do the Cubs continue to compound this mistake……? The money is gone so why not send Sorry-Ass-Ono to Iowa and STOP KILLING US NOW…….?
