Why I can never give up hope
It seems that many guys on here have already given up on this season, team, and coaches. I know this has been reiterated by some but it is way too early to just throw OUR team over the boat. Seemingly every year there is a team able to make a late run for the playoffs or another team choking. In 2008 the Mets had a 3.5 game lead over the Phillies on Sept. 10. By Oct 1, they fell three games behind the Phillies. On this day in 2007, the Rockies were 7 games behind Arizona for the West. At the end of the season, they were only a half game behind and they won the wild card and got to the WS On this day in 2006, the Twins were 7.5 games behind the Tigers for the Central. On Oct 1, the Twins took the Central with a one game lead over the Tigers. I'm not saying the Cubs will win the Central , or go to the World Series. I'm just saying it's way to early to give up hope now. Don't complain that the Cubs have given up on us while we do the same to them. Go Cubbies!!!

I hope things change
but this isn’t 2008. It’s 2009.

that just means
it’s all going to happen differently.
Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.

The Phillies, Twins, and Rockies have some things in common -
All three are organizations that value smart baseball decisionmaking, and all three refuse to delude themselves into thinking that everything will work out great if they just believe hard enough.

Well...
I believe I’m one of the more optimistic members of BCB, but I’m certainly not dim enough to realize that the season is slipping away at a rapid pace at this point. The scenarios you have mentioned are generally the exceptions rather than the rules and it will take quite a turnaround to make the postseason. I won’t declare the season dead until it truly is, but I’m certainly realistic about our current chances.
That said, I won’t piss all over your optimism. I’m glad you’ve retained this attitude and hope throughout the last 2 weeks, and I for one find it refreshing.
This is pretty much how I feel.
The Cubs have dug – and continue to dig – themselves into a hole that they’re not likely to get out of – especially with the Cardinals fattening themselves up on weaker teams (uh oh, think I just mixed a metaphor). But, yeah, there’s still a lot of baseball left and, as usual, I’ve resigned myself to going down with the ship in the faint hope that the cavalry will arrive (damn, mixed another one).
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.
exactly my thoughts
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
The only thing in our favor this year
Is that Rockies and Giants play each other and the Dodgers a lot in September/August.
If Cubs can get on a streak and play better then them and the Marlins then maybe they can get the wildcard. If not, well, there’s always next year…
Never give up! Never surrender!
I’m with you. Not about to give up while there is still a chance.

It's hard to not be optimistic
looking at the Cubs’ remaining schedule. Like Kansas said above, though, it’s slipping away at a rapid pace. Time to pick up the play ASAP while there is still time. The margin for error gets smaller and smaller with every performance like the last two nights.

I wish I did NOT have hope
I wish I could give up , walk away. see some more movies. try harder to find a job etc. I can’t call myself an optimist
more like a crack head but I can’t change now. I did actually go to sleep after the 5th inning last night but I sill plan to
see 13 more games at Wrigley. Well I do have that great record so you never know I guess.

Maybe it's your fault.
You should have gone on this road trip.

Well if you'd paid for it
I would have considered it.

Honestly
“Don’t complain that the Cubs have given up on us while we do the same to them. Go Cubbies!!!”
The Cubs can’t give up on something that they never really started.
totally different
Our giving up has no bearing on what happens. I’m not saying any fans SHOULD give up. But we’re not on the field.
I have great hope for the Cubs
But I read Josh’s updates more closely than game threads.
Oh, you were talking hope for 2009?
it's not over
till you’re mathematically eliminated. Even I have trouble mustering enthusiasm for the games sometimes, but they are our team. Go Cubs.
Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.
