Stick a fork in the season. We're done.
Lou needs to find a new line of work.
It's fairly obvious that Lou Piniella doesn't have the fire for it anymore. With the sale of the team at a standstill, and nothing being done to improve the team, Lou just keeps trotting the same inept players out there in hopes that they will play up to their salary. But it.s not working. The players know that they don.t have to perform well and will still be in the lineup. Why break thir rearends if they don't have to? Alfonso Soriano should have been warming the bench for 90% of this season. Ryan Theriot is still living off of last years hustle and now thinks he's a power hitter. I am still trying to remember some small thing that Aaron Miles has contributed to the team effort this year but I'm having difficulty. The pitching staff, with the exception of Lilly and Wells couldn't find the strike zone with a telescope and Zambrano will obviously never grow up. We have Guzman and Marshall in the bullpen. The rest are pretty much useless. But Lou won't bench anyone, Hendry won't trade anyone so for the Cub faithful it's pretty much over. I only hope that the new owners are watching closely. If they are, be on the lookout for a large truck to be backing up to the Wrigley Field Gates.

Ryan Theriot is still living off of last years hustle and now thinks he’s a power hitter.
Really? I thought he’s been hitting around .300 all year and only has 7 hrs. His strikeouts are up a little but so are his triples and RBIs. Although I agree this season is toast, Theriot is the least of my concerns.

Theriot's not the problem.
His defense is below average, but he’s been solid at the plate. And don’t forget that he’s making a relatively modest $500K this year. A very good value in my opinion.

Alfonso Soriano should be warming the bench at this point
Yeah, I know the Soriano situation is a dead horse that’s had all its flesh flogged off, but I’ve had it with him. I’ve thought from the beginning that the contract he got was nothing short of ridiculous. If he’d been offered four or five years at $18 million and turned it down, I doubt if anyone would have blamed Jim Hendry and he would have been someone else’s problem. Instead of being a 40/40 or even a 30/30 guy, I think the Cubs will be fortunate if he steals another forty bases over the duration of his contract. As it is, the Cubs are essentially paying him for the big numbers he put up in the past. The word “hustle” doesn’t seem to be in his vocabulary, he doesn’t have a clue about baseball fundamentals, and lately it looks like he just doesn’t even care any more. Yes, he’s carried the team from time to time in the past, but his slumps and abominable defense just don’t balance the equation. Of course, there’s always the possibility that he’s playing hurt, but if that’s the case, he’s not doing the team any favors and he should be put on the DL until he’s healthy.
I would be willing to wager that there would be little or no outcry if he were to be benched for awhile in favor of Jake Foxx, Sam Fuld, and Reed Johnson when he returns from the DL. Sure, “conventional wisdom” dictates that you don’t bench someone making that kind of money, but it’s hard to imagine there are very many Cubs fans who don’t already consider his contract money down the drain. He’s being paid to help the team, and right now the best way he can do that is to take a seat.
Sorry for the rant, but this is something I’ve had to get off my chest for awhile. Thanks for your indulgence.

Hendry offered 8 years
because that’s what he thought it would take to sign him. Because he WANTED to sign him, as did most of the rest of the league. He didn’t — and frankly, should be fired if he ever does this — offer a contract hoping it would be “turned down” without getting blamed. The goal was for the contract NOT to get turned down.
Is he a 40/40 guy anymore? No, clearly not. Leg injuries have taken their toll and will keep that from ever happening again in all likelihood. But Hendry couldn’t have known that when he signed him.

Orval - You misunderstand
I didn’t mean that Hendry should have offered a contract hoping it would be refused. You’re right, that would have been idiotic. I’m saying that, given Soriano’s age at the time, a four year or maybe a five year contract would have been the sensible offer to make. If he wouldn’t have signed for that, Hendry should have wished him all the best and let him sign elsewhere. Yes, he couldn’t have foreseen the leg injuries, but it’s a fact of baseball life that most guys in their mid- to late thirties are not going to be huge threats to steal anyway. In a year or so, he still would have been a guy with some pop and no clue what to do on the bases or in the field.
And I truly believe that had Soriano signed elsewhere, maybe there would have been some grumbling, but at this point people would probably be heaving huge sighs of relief and praising Hendry for his admirable foresight and self-control.
by Mike Vails Evil Twin on Aug 19, 2009 8:02 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
He wouldn't have signed for 4. That wasn't the market. See Al's note above.
by Orval Overall on Aug 20, 2009 1:10 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I suppose I didn't phrase that right
I meant Hendry Hendry should only have been willing to offer four or five years. I don’t know the chronology of the offers, but if the Angels offered Soriano seven years, Hendry should have packed it in and looked for a better way to spend the Tribune’s money. Bottom line—you don’t give an eight-year, heavily back loaded deal to a guy who’s already over thirty. If he’d been twenty-seven, that’s a different story and I wouldn’t be complaining about it (at least not nearly as much).
by Mike Vails Evil Twin on Aug 20, 2009 1:33 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The point was...
… to announce that the Cubs were going to be players in the free-agent market. Soriano was the premier free agent that offseason.
Many of us said at the time that if the Cubs won in the first 2-3 years of the deal, we wouldn’t care about the last five years of the deal.
That window is closing, but it’s still open.

They paid too much...
…especially considering they viewed him as their leadoff guy. I’ll bet the Angels were considering him for the middle of the order.
Hendry has clearly has over paid for some players and has handed out too many no trades which will make it very expensive to go in a different direction. In my mind, giving 10 mil and a no trade to spellcheck was really really uncalled for, and that one flies under the radar.

Sorry, but I get really frustrated with posts like these. I’m just as disappointed as anyone with the way this team has underachieved, but why do you feel it necessary to declare the season over? In any case, you’re either preaching to the choir here or beating horses that have long been dead. Not that I agree with everything you’ve said.
The starting staff beyond Lilly and Wells hasn’t been all that bad, and Ryan Theriot is actually having a pretty decent season – if he can hang on, he’ll post the highest OPS of his career.
It’s also pretty funny that you say “Hendry won’t trade anyone” when he traded Gathright earlier in the season, brought aboard Jeff Baker when he could, and then bolstered the pitching staff with the Grabow-Gorzelanny deal.
But, hey, last night’s win aside, I’m guessing many Cubs fans will need to get a rant or two off their chests as this season draws to a close. So welcome aboard.

The season has been over for a long time
The only thing is that Cub fans lived in denial given what they saw in the NL Central standings. But anybody with a functioning brain could see that this team has not been the same since the 2008 playoff debacle against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Not once during 2009 have the Cubs looked good for a sustained stretch. Not once.
And don’t expect for miraculous improvement next year. Soriano, Kosuke and Milton will be back, which is highly problematic indeed. And Hendry is already taken the payroll beyond reasonableness at $135 million. Plus the ownership thing isn’t resolved, meaning Jim Hendry IS going to be back.
Might as well start talking about Starlin Castro and Josh Vitters, and hope like hell they can be something to get excited about in the future. The present and near-term future is U.G.L.Y. But then again I’ve been telling you that for a long time now.
