Star-divide

But that's just for this season so far. Has anyone that offensively inept gotten that many attempts in previous years?

Just 18 players in the last 20 years have been in the same range of offensive failure while getting more plate appearances. Miles is on pace for 207 PA this season which would leave just 4 players in the last 20 years with more ABs and a lower OPS. I can only hope he doesn't maintain that PA pace.

Wait, so what you're saying is....

Miles could be the next Pat Listach?

Did you use Photoshop for that picture?

It looks like Miles, but he’s wearing a Cubs uniform and running around the bases.

I think it's from Spring Training.

When Miles may or may not have actually reached base.

Sure he's not rounding home and heading back to the dugout after a K?

grounded into a force out (4-6 or maybe to the pitcher)

for the second out. infield popup (kingman-esque trajectory) and he reached second when it was caught. tis how he was caught rounding a base.

LMAO...

But that’s actually Miles practicing in the on-deck circle. You know, act-it-out, believe!

by DudeVf11 on Aug 22, 2009 7:35 AM CDT up reply actions

Coincidentaly

I’ve only vaguely heard of most of those guys…because they were REALLY bad.

I think if he tries really hard

He can be the worst player since 1955…

I didn't realize

how bad Tony Pena was year. Of course, he at least had defensive strength.

It never gets to be easy

by chitownhawkeye on Aug 21, 2009 2:27 PM CDT reply actions

actually he wasn't

those were his 2009 OPS and OPS+ numbers with his 2008 PA numbers

he was still awful offensively

It's shocking what you can miss sometimes. The amazing color changing card trick.

Miles V. Gathright

I don’t know who is worse. I saw a lot of Miles in AAA and felt he would be a useful bench player. I don’t know if Miles has been as valuable as the literal structure of a bench this season. I wasn’t as surprised with Gathright’s poor performance, but he might have done better than Miles. That’s a real insult to say you are not the “offensive” force of the “great” Joey Gathright. At least, Gathright didn’t cost as much as Miles.

by memphiscub on Aug 21, 2009 3:03 PM CDT reply actions

And Gathright was a good defensive player at a difficult position.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

That list of players....

is whole lot of suck.

Nobody cares about your fantasy baseball team

by carmen_fanzone on Aug 21, 2009 3:56 PM CDT reply actions

Not completely

Inge made the All-Star team this year, and Listach was Rookie of the Year, but otherwise that’s pretty much a list of “Who’s Not Who” in baseball history.

Also, while it pains me to see Dernier and Dascenzo, I love that Kenny Williams is on that list.

by Jody Jody Davis on Aug 21, 2009 4:45 PM CDT up reply actions

It was Inge's rookie year and Lisach's final year

but I’m surprised at the number of players that “accomplished” this “feat” and had a job in the majors the following year.

I can’t think of a time I wouldn’t be happy with it.

It just seemed like a nice rainy afternoon project. Better than arguing more about which Colts LT sucked more last night over at SB.

I'm confused as to why you want to DFA Aaron Miles...

He was signed to be the versatile player for the team that Mark DeRosa was last year. And he’s much more versatile than DeRo ever was — he can actually pitch! Who cares about his OPS? Why wouldn’t you want someone like that on your team????

You may be on to something here.

Maybe Lou should try Miles at closer. Unlike Marmol, Miles has not walked a single batter in his major league pitching career (three innings).

I can't be the only one who remembers this...

He had like a 2 or 3 hit day with one nice play at 2B, it was just a shitty game for everyone else so he pretty much won it by default. This had to have been back in like April or May.

Dascenzo was.

Dernier put up those numbers for the 1989 Phillies. Strange did so for the 1998 Pirates.

Perspective....

To put this, er, “accomplishment” into perspective, Willie Bloomquist has never posted an OPS under. 613.

by BobbyMac on Aug 24, 2009 9:31 AM CDT reply actions

Mick Kelleher territory

Kelleher’s OPS was usually in the low 500s, but he did have a beauty of a .146/.217/.177 his last year with the Cubs (1980) in 107 PA

It's a simple question, Doctor: would you eat the moon if it were made of ribs??

by Invalid User on Aug 24, 2009 7:06 PM CDT up reply actions

In a much lower-offense era.

Kelleher’s hitting was bad, but he could at least play good defense. Miles can’t.

by Al Yellon on Aug 24, 2009 7:17 PM CDT up reply actions

True enough

And in today’s hitting climate, NO position player on a 25-man roster should hit worse than Mick Kelleher did.

It's a simple question, Doctor: would you eat the moon if it were made of ribs??

by Invalid User on Aug 24, 2009 7:23 PM CDT up reply actions

That's a pretty elite list.

I may be reaching here, but are you suggesting if Aaron Miles was the GM, the Cubs would win a World Series in Chicago with Shawon Dunston as manager?

if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand

by N Oakley on Aug 24, 2009 12:30 PM CDT reply actions

And of course, there is the founder of the Mendoza line

Mario Mendoza, 1979, Seattle. Note that the Mariners traded for him and made him their everyday SS….

401 PA, .198/.216/.249. 466 OPS, 25 OPS+.

Makes me wonder if any non-pitcher with over 100 PA ever had more PA than OPS?

It's a simple question, Doctor: would you eat the moon if it were made of ribs??
