Who still believes that this team can reach the postseason?
This team isn't the 07 Rockies, or 04 BoSox. These are the underacheiving, overpaid 2009 Chicago Cubs. Face it hopefuls, we're just not good enough. I gave up after Gregg and co blew it against the Fathers last Monday.
I can't wait unitl the Cutler era officially begins in September, and when pitchers and catchers report next February.
I am somewhat happy that the Deal is finally going to get done and by Opening Day 2010, we will have The Ricketts as new owners. Anything is better than the Zell-bune. Hopefully, the Ricketts will somewhat clean house and we'll see more younger talent, and less overpaid, underacheiving veterans.
I just can't see how any logical fan can believe that the Cubs will all of sudden get magically hot and catch up with either the Cardinals or Rockies. This team keeps showing us its true colors. Most of the players gave up, along with Lou. Please enlighten me with your reason why some of you continue to believe.

I see,
this happens to be your first input at BCB. Great. It has been a tough year, glad you pointed that out.
"Have You heard of the Boom on Mizar 5?"
I do.
I know, I’m in the minority. But still… there’s still 1/4 of the season for these guys to play the way we KNOW they are capable of. Keep the faith.

As Cubs fans we have to have attitudes like Al
The Cubs are there for us everyday. Maybe they’re not winning, but at 1:20 or 7:05 there’s a Cub game. We need to be there for them. If the Wrigley crowds get quiet in September then there is no chance this team will make the playoffs. But if we’re loud then maybe these boys will get fired up and get hot.
If you want to give up on this team, think of December when you’re craving to find an article written about the Cubs in the paper or online. I think about this team all day, 365 days a year. Why would I give up on a talented ball club in August? I understand that the Cubs are frustrating at times, but if you want to be a Cub fan then you have to understand that too. The 2008 regular season cannot be the expectation for each year. I’m not advocating for the return of the lovable losers, but rather for the return of the die-hard Cubs fans. If you’re a bandwaggoner from 08 or 07 or 03, I urge you to jump ship now. If you bleed cubbie blue, I know that you will never jump.

Oh, I'll keep watching
Because I love baseball. But I’m not going to die a 1000 deaths by going into each game convinced that it will be the game that starts the big comeback. I think that’s why people post things like this….they NEED to give up so that each game doesn’t open up the wound.
I don’t mean to trash your post, but the Cubs as players aren’t there for us – they are there for them. They haven’t gotten fired up all year, save a two-week stretch in July. We aren’t going to be on the road, where they have shown consistent ineptness. Yeah, I’ll still cheer, but not as hard – I don’t have it in me. If the Cubs don’t make it to the post season, it’s not on me, you or anyone else but them.

I couldn't have said it better, Badger
Right now, it’s depressing to watch this team. It’s not so much that they’re losing…as a lifelong Cub fan I’m used to that. It’s more that they look so listless and uninterested in doing it. They’re not just bad right now, they’re boring. Somebody said on one of the threads last night that, at this point, a 2-1 deficit feels like 20-1.

On the radio,
Pat mentioned a quote made by Ronnie sometime in the past something to the effect of when you are ahead by 7 games it feels like 7 inches, but when you are behind 7 games it feels like 7 miles.

I've heard that quote from Santo before.
IIRC, he said it originally in 1969.

Well it is POSSIBLE
But VERY, VERY, VERY unlikely and it will won’t happen as long as Lou plays Soriano and Miles is on the roster.
They are clearly trying to hold out till Sept.1 to add Blanco etc but they don’t have that time. I know seems silly to say
Blanco would make a difference but I think he would and Fox/Fuld in for Soriano would help too. Still you see no life from the team, starting with Lou and going down.

I've said it before and I'll say it again..Never give up! Never surrender!
The fun starts Tues. and then this is going to be one exciting Sept.
So just out of curiosity, did you jump ship to some other team or not? and is there really another baseball team in Chicago?

Anything can happen in baseball
Which is why I don’t give up and if Cubs do sneak into post season. Things have to click on all cylinders and that could be enough for them to do well againts a good team in October.
no
same old cubs. the hottest team after the all star break and then they lose 11 of 15. they always find a way to undo the good things that they do.
The team is clearly...
…spiraling downward, and it’s much more likely the Cubs are double digit games behind the Cards by mid September rather than 3-4 games behind.
It is what it is, and there is very little anybody can do about it at this point. The scary thing is how much money is committed on the payroll for next year, and how much of that dough is bad money.

Sadly, we'll probably be asking each other that very question for another month or so.
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

I’m going to run around the stadium and close all the windows. That’s where I’m going, pal. And I’ll tell you something else. I am very nervous!

As of today we have an 8.7% chance of making the postseason
Ain’t going to happen.
So there's a chance!

At the risk of exuding a whiff of optimism
I wonder what the percentage would go up to if we gained two games on the Cards?
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
The odds...
… which come from this Baseball Prospectus page, are based on a simulation that runs the rest of the season (from whatever day you are on) 1 million times. The “odds” are the number of times the team makes the playoffs of the 1 million simulations.
I’d guess it would go up quite a bit, probably into the 20-25% range, if it happened in the next 2 days.

Yes.. I believe..
When the first week of September passes, and the Cubs have not yet transformed into a more interested team that is putting together convincing wins or opportunities to win every night, I will officially give up. But not before then, there’s still way too much talent on this roster.

I honestly think that this team has atleast 1 more good long run in them
(maybe 7 of 9 or something like that). If they can do that, and play consistently (the way we know this team CAN play) for the rest of the season, I think they have a chance. I think if they can be within 4-5 games by September 1st then they have a very good chance.
"Brant Brown...DROPS THE BALL!!!!"
They need a longer run.
More like 15 of 18.
I do believe that is very doable. Problem is, at this point, they also need a lot of help from other teams.

… Astros, then Nats, then Brewers.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
Yeah
therein lies the rub. While the Cubs figure to start winning again when the schedule starts to favor them again, they need some help from teams vs the Cardinals. Do you have any confidence that will be the case? Do you still think Matt Holliday can’t hit away from Coors?
Do you think Matt Holliday is going to hit .400 the rest of the season?
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
No...
…but he won’t have to either.

His hitting is one of the biggest reasons the Cardinals are winning.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
You keep
responding with that as if it is the magic answer. It doesn’t even begin to address your assertion that Halliday would not perform offensively the way he did with Colorado.
He hit about .330 with the Rockies with approx. .900 OPS. And yes, I think that is what the Cardinals hoped they were getting, and yes, I think that is what his numbers with the Cardinals will be when the season ends. Holliday is a quality hitter and NL pitchers have a tough time getting him out. Bottom line: Good to great trade for the Redbirds, despite your attempts to rain on their parade.
I hope they can make it that far, I really really do.
But i just don’t see this team (the way they have been the vast majority of the year) making it to October. I know that when these guys are playing to their potential, they can make it. But most of the players just look like they’ve lost all hope. And i know i curse and boo at home whenever SOri K’s and when Gregg takes the mound, but when every Cub fan boos in the stadium, it can’t feel to good on their confidence. This team is beaten and worn. They need to regroup. I know they aren’t out until mathematically eliminated, but my morale is pretty low right now, especially when Gregg blew that save.
10% chance

Possible?
Sure, anything is possible. Probable? I don’t think so. I thought we had the best team in the division at the start of the season, but I think that the Cardinals are proving that isn’t the case. Plus, there are just too many teams between the Cubs and that one wildcard slot. There is a very slight chance that they could finish really strong and make the playoffs, but I personally don’t think they have it in them at this point. I certainly hope that they prove me wrong.
You know the ship has sunk when the "it's not over to the Cubs are mathematically eliminated" nutbags come out
"Cubs will win 79 to 83 games." BLou (7/21/09)
Over?
To a fan, in our hearts we can cling to “it’s not over till they are mathematically eliminated…” however I think we need to be realistic too.
The Cubs are not “mathematically eliminated,” yet, but to be realistic it’s very unlikely that they’d win the NL Central. The Cubs have not played well this season. And now to win the NL Central it’s dependent on the Cards falling apart AND the Cubs playing very well. It could happen, but I don’t expect it to at this point.
With that said, I’ll post this, again…

Thanks for all of your comments
I’m at work right now so it’s kinda hard to read all of em, but I’ll eventually get em all.
Yes I am a new member but I’ve visited this forum after Dusty Baker was fired. (I used to visit firedustybaker.com). So I come to this forum to read comments and laugh whenever the Cubbies frustrate me.
I’m not a fairweather fan, I started being a Cubs fans when I was 6 in 1987 watching Andre Dawson have his magical MVP season. After 1987 I was hooked.
2005 was one of the worst times in my life. I really envied what the other team won, while us……
Finally don’t get me wrong, I never said I refuse to watch anymore Cubs games. Of course I’ll still watch and follow them until the season is over. I just don’t care about them trying to reach the playoffs. Either I gave up believing or I’ve accepted the fact that we won’t. Is that wrong? I don’t knock Al and other’s beliefs, but that’s just me.
(Al why was I warned? What did I do wrong?)
In the real world everyone that worked for the Cubs would be fired
It was over before it started
Its 2004 2.0
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
I don't think this team can reach the postseason
I’m not against being surprised, but this ship has been taking on a lot of water lately. It looks as if they just got red hot after the AS break and went back to playing at pre-AS break levels.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
It's over...
To those who coninue to cling to hope since we’re not yet mathematically eliminated all I can say is that if that kind of thinking works for you, great. Whatever gets you through the night, etc.
To the rest of us, it’s “wait til next year time” (yet again). I’ll be back in the Spring, excited, refreshed and optimistic (within reason).
Hand raised.
Will they? I don’t know. Not if they don’t play better. But this team has the ability to make a run, and they still are not too far out of it. So yes, of course, they can make the postseason even if it remains unlikely.
to those who say it is done
I will not say you are fairweather, and I respect that you have had enough this season. I will ask that you do not post 100000000000 negative posts and comments, as not to ruin it for others please
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
Not gonna happen.
People who just want to watch baseball, albeit probably meaningless baseball, will still be ruthlessly assailed by the prophets of doom, whose main purpose in life is to constantly remind everyone of everything that is wrong with the team and this season so that no moments of levity or joy can exist while the season continues.
They are our tormentors, and they will not stop.

Let me make a radical suggestion;
…ignore the comments that you don’t like and react to the ones that you do. It’s a simple strategy and, believe me, it’s a lot better than getting sucked into endless, pointless arguments. It took me awhile to learn that for myself and believe me when I say that I’ve had a lot better time on this site since I stopped taking the bait.

good point
but when there are 10 fanposts about the negatives, it is not easy to overlook, it also pushes good posts off the board
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
I know...
And honesty compels me to admit that I’ve made my share of negative posts since, as much as I love this team, they frustrate me beyond all reason and sometimes I give in to the need to vent to people who share my passion. that being said though, lately I’ve tried to stay off the game threads because, as you said, anything gets old when you’re having it constantly pounded into your head.

it is healthy. I am also for not over doing the amount of vent posts. Its finding the mid ground where we can, as a family, balance it

I am not familiar with Cutler...
but I think there is still an outside chance for the playoffs. I am starting to root for .500 with each pathetic showing of this offense, however. It’s still too early for me to give up, but I am not optimistic.
cubbies
people who say its over are not fairweather fans. they are longtime cub fans who have probably been dealing with this for 20-30 years. call me a pessimist but you have to be realistic. the cards have a big lead and there are 4 to 5 teams to piggyback in the wildcard. and as always they pick the worst time to go into a slump. if we had 3 months left i might say maybe but its just too late to turn it around.
I realize that streaks start and end without warning
so there is still a chance for the Cubs to get hot and with a lot of luck, the Cardinals falter at the same time. I would love to have that happen, but I am not hanging on every at bat to see if it WILL happen. Realistically, they are done. The Rockies’, Phillies’ and this series has shown me that they aren’t battling for wins at all. If they were losing 5-4 7-5, or something like that, fine. They are scoring and just need to prevent the other team from scoring. But Colorado, Philly and the Dodgers are shutting us down. This weekend is a perfect example. I’m sure there is motivation to beat them because of them sweeping us last year in October and we are fighting for our playoff lives. So, what do we do? We go out and score 3 runs in 3 games, and get 1-hit in one of them.
When was the last time a team tipped their cap to one of our pitchers and said that he was too tough? We have done that an awful lot this year to the other team. I said in another thread, the Cubs hitters should get a share of the NL Cy Young award for making middling pitchers look great.
