Return To Fox-TV: Cubs vs. Dodgers Preview, Saturday 8/22, 3:10 CT

The Cubs haven't had a visit to Fox-TV's Saturday regional telecasts in over a month (since July 11), so let's see which of you will be "treated" -- and I use the word loosely -- to today's telecast.

Guess what the other game is? You probably don't need to. It's those two East Coast teams who shall remain nameless here. Naturally, the New York-based television network thinks everyone should see them. Here's the complete list of markets carrying the Cubs/Dodgers game:

Albuqerque, NM; Bakersfield, CA; Bowling Green, KY; Casper, WY; Cedar Rapids, IA; Champaign, IL; Cheyenne, WY; Chicago, IL; Chico, CA; Cincinnati, OH; Colorado Springs, CO; Columbia, MO; Davenport, IA; Dayton, OH; Denver, CO; Des Moines, IA; Eureka, CA; Evansville, IN; Ft. Smith, AR; Ft. Wayne, IN; Fresno, CA; Grand Junction, CO; Green Bay, WI; Honolulu, HI; Houston, TX; Indianapolis, IN; Jackson, TN; Joplin, MO; Kansas City, MO; LaCrosse, WI; Las Vegas, NV; Lexington, KY; Lincoln, NE; Los Angeles, CA; Louisville, KY; Madison, WI; Medford, OR; Memphis, TN; Milwaukee, WI; Monterey, CA; Nashville, TN; North Platte, NE; Oklahoma City, OK; Omaha, NE; Ottumwa, IA; Paducah, KY; Palm Springs, CA; Peoria, IL; Phoenix, AZ; Quincy, IL; Reno, NV; Rockford, IL; Sacramento, CA; San Diego, CA; San Francisco, CA; Sacramento, CA; Sioux City, IA; South Bend, IN; Springfield, IL; Springfield, MO; St. Louis, MO; Terre Haute, IN; Topeka, KS; Tucson, AZ; Tulsa, OK; Wausau, WI; Wichita, KS; Yuma, AZ

In summary: Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Arizona, Nevada, California, Wyoming, Wisconsin, Colorado, Hawaii, and parts of Tennessee, New Mexico, Texas, Nebraska and Ohio.

Try to enjoy the game. Maybe you consider yourself lucky if you can't see it.

Charlie Haeger had a typical knuckleballer's start in his return to the major leagues last Monday vs. the Cardinals. He struck out two and didn't walk anyone -- but gave up a pair of homers, the difference in a 3-2 Cardinals win. He's one of only two active practitioners of the nearly lost knuckleball art, the other being Tim Wakefield. The Cubs never faced him in his two brief callups with the White Sox in 2006 and 2007; as far as I can tell the last time the Cubs faced a knuckleballer, it was Wakefield on June 12, 2005 at Wrigley Field; boxscore posted for amusement value only. Knuckleballers can either be lights-out or get pounded; hopefully it'll be "get pounded" today. The only current Cub Haeger has ever faced is Jeff Baker (0-for-1).

Ted Lilly and the Cubs defeated the Dodgers on May 29 at Wrigley Field. Familiar score, too -- 2-1. Ted was originally drafted by the Dodgers organization in 1996 and is 3-0, 3.20 in four starts vs. LA. The Dodgers who he defeated in May were Manny-less; Manny Ramirez has hit four HR off Ted, but is only 11-for-42 (.262) overall.

See the list above the fold to check if the game is on the Fox affiliate in your city. For other games today see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

With Carpenter going

in SD tonight, a win by the Cubs likely is necessary to avoid dropping another game to the Cardinals.

by azjazzman on Aug 22, 2009 1:15 PM CDT reply actions

I find myself caring less and less about this season...

Quite honestly, everything that can go wrong, has gone wrong.

Kevin Gregg SUCKS.

Aaron Miles REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY SUCKS.

Milton Bradley has 9 homers and 31 RBI’s and a stupid chirping motion to a fan after he hits a meaningless solo homer.

Mike Fontenot has been exposed as an everyday player…altough he has more RBI’s than Bradley.

Geo Soto has either a sophmore slump or he’s a one year wonder, I tend to lean towards the latter.

Alfonso Soriano has completely fall off the edge, and he’s here for FIVE MORE YEARS.

Zambrano is breaking down, and he has a grand total of 7 wins. Not to mention he’s a headcase.

Dempster of last year was a classic contract year, except Game.

Aaron Heilman is worse than Bob Howry, at least Howry threw strikes.

Jake Fox looks like he’s become exposed a la Micah Hoffpauir.

Plus, the manager makes baffling decisions and seems uninterested.

You are without a doubt the best and most loyal fan the Cubs have ever had. The rest of us have doubts and fears about our team. We are given the option to express them here, with varying results. If you don’t agree with a particular opinion, attack said opinion, not the poster.

no, I don't think it's that at all.

It’s not enough for cubfanwill to have given up on the team. He has to come and share it — ENUMERATE it. And there’s not a damn thing we can do about it. I’m not going to flag his comment for “lameness”, although I kinda wish I could.

So, since my opinion about this underachieving baseball team is negative, I should keep it to myself?

What if I thought your unrealistic optimism should not be shared here, and I thought it was lame?

Not everyone here is as optimistic about this team as your are Drew. And frankly, as far as wanting the rest of you to “give up” on this team, I could care less.

And we're still in second place - go figure.

Most everything HAS gone wrong this year, but on paper that description fits the Nationals. Makes you think that we’re a few tweaks and a little more production away from winning 90+ games in the very near future. I think the Cubs are much closer to being a contender than needing to be blown up…

Thank God for the Wild Card

Seriously – I mean that. Unless they starting winning a boat load of games, the Cubs won’t challenge for the Wild Card. But it keeps the interest alive…

Let’s see if after the season that “we’re a few tweaks …. away from winning 90+ games in the very near future”.

Right now it takes an optimist to even predict an above .500 record for this flawed team. A pessimist might say the wheels are coming off and the final quarter of the season is potentially very, very ugly.

I'm not sure where you're getting that Fox has been exposed

He was hitting .305 10 days ago. It seems more that Lou has forgotten Fox is on the team, as he’s had three at-bats over the last week. This despite a left fielder continuing to start who can’t hit

by Illicat on Aug 22, 2009 1:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I guess I mean...

That he’s another late 20’s rookie, that isn’t a good fielder. Plus, he hasn’t been seeing many fastballs lately.

That being said, I’d much rather see he or Fuld in the outfield than that guy.

by azjazzman on Aug 22, 2009 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions

maybe, but before that recent slide, which could also be thanks to in-frequent playing time

he was 6 for 14.

Those 19 at bats span seven games. he’s not getting regular plate appearances

Don't hang your hat...

…on Fox. We have no idea what will happen to him as teams get a chance to see his holes.

Hoffpauir put up incredible numbers at AAA just like Fox, but he could make the adjustment at the big league level. Fox might, but I wouldn’t pencil him in as a starter next year, you may end up with another Fontenot situation.

In my opinion

we need some kind of change, and i think we should fire lou. It’s nothing personal to lou but this team needs to be sent a message that things need to get better, similar to what the brewers did late last year, which actually helped them into the playoffs.

by gocubs1 on Aug 22, 2009 1:29 PM CDT reply actions

it's not going to happen

Lou is here for the rest of the season. Hopefully he won’t be back next year and we can take that consolation prize.

Despite some fans not “giving up hope” I think the team, and front office knows this season is done.

Haeger has faced the Cubbies...

… it was Spring Training, March 2007. I remember because Santo was completely clueless about Haeger. Santo during the broadcast had no idea that Haeger threw a knuckleball. I know it was only a ST gaming, but jeez do a bit of preparation (FYI the Cubs TV guys knew about Haeger and his main pitch – the knuckleball).

In that ST game Derrek Lee hit a HR off Haeger.

By the time Santo completed saying “YOU CAN PUT ON THE BOARD, YES!” two innings would have passed by.

I had forgotten about that game...

Looks like Soriano and Ramirez faced Haeger in that game, too.

Knuckle under...

I had hoped that Haeger would get the long relief role in the Sox BP last season, but he was released late in the season. I enjoy the odd-ball nature of the knuckleball and have had a fondness for that pitch since my youth watching Wilbur Wood piling up the innings for the Sox. Wood had four straight seasons of 300+ IP and the fifth year he had 291!

The trouble for the Cubs may not be today but tomorrow and the next day. Maybe it won’t the same, but I seem to recall the Sox sluggers being screwed up for days after facing knuckleballers, such as Steve Sparks.

Not again. I wonder what nefarious secret Miles has got on Lou.

Lineup Schlineup

Fuld, Bradley, Lee, Ramirez, Fukudome, Baker, Soto, Miles, Lilly..

I miss Blanco, but at least Sori’s out (for now).

no TWO steps forward and ONE step back

We get Fuld AND Dome but no Sori but then we get MILES AT SS. Lou just want to say F)*&^%^ you to us.

I'm just hoping this is Miles "last chance" just like I was hoping last night was Soriano's "last chance"

Of course.. with Lou it’s like.. OK… NOW I’m giving you one more last chance. I mean it this time..no wait.. this time, next ti.., ok only three more times… period.. after that I’m really going to consider not giving you that many more last chances. i really might mean it this time!!!

Miles should be batting 16th in that lineup.

he should be the 41st man on the 40 man

I just came in from walking the dogs

And I found that Aaron Miles was in the lineup and we are already down 1-0.

I take it all back. I’m not sure I would sleep with Anne Hathaway to ensure a Cubs championship.

As Katie sort of put it earlier, If they don’t give a f—-, why should I give a f—-?

FOX tv sports

Hey Al: Don’t the idiots at FOX and MLB realize how much money they’re losing because most baseball fans refuse to watch Yankee games. I’ve gotten accustomed to hearing Pat & Ron’s game audio while sorta watching the games on Yahoo. The thing that irks me the most is that I’m not allowed to watch the live games on MLB-TV either. I think we ought to get a rebate for these games. Don’t worry, I’m not going to hold my breath. I’ve done some pretty dumb things in the last 65 years, but even I’m not that stupid. Then again, like you said, I haven’t been missing much lately.
