Good...

Trade them both. Maybe we can get something of value for Harden.

Someday we'll go all the way...

Just let Heilman go.

It’s that simple. Let this mystery team take him. He sucks.

But get something in return for Harden.

teams put through pretty much the entire roster, just for shits and giggles a lot of times. also, to sometimes help sneak another guy through.

don’t worry, I am sure Lou loves Aaron & Rich.

Yes, but this time they were claimed.

I know it’s only a first step and will most likely not lead anywhere, but if they can get a useful part they might as well.

At this point, they should keep Harden and try to re-sign him.

He’s a free agent, so I’m not sure how much trade value he has, since he’d be a one month rental.

There's no reason to hang onto Heilman so he should be gone.

Harden will be a Type A free agent so unless they get something really good for him I don’t see them trading him. Plus it pretty much admits that they believe the season is done and I don’t see them admitting it just yet.

I wonder.....

who else has been put on waivers.

I’d like to see Hendry at least TRY and unload a bit.

Some thoughts

1) Heilman gone? GOOD

2) I sure hope we don’t regret seeing Harden go. I’m not so sure we won’t miss him next year… I suppose it all comes down to money eh?

3) I guess I watched Harden play his last game for the Cubs last night at Wrigley. Didn’t think about that possibility.

4) They forgot to also mention that someone claimed Aaron Miles off waviers… right? right?

Just being claimed doesn't mean they'll go.

They can be pulled back if we don’t feel we get enough in trade offer. And in the case of Harden, we’ll have to get better than two top draft picks’ worth.

If I'm Ricketts...

…I would say lets get our house in order before we start dolling more money out for either FA’s or players acquired through trades. You have to think they may make a decision to eat some dough on a player or two, and that could prohibit any significant signings – unless he wanted to allow a payroll of 150+ mil, which I highly doubt.

You have to strengthen the foundation before you start throwing more money at players, and that won’t be an easy task.

It would be nice if...

… the Cubs could jettison some of the bad contracts. That might mean taking other teams’ bad deals in return.

That worked out pretty well when Hendry dumped Todd Hundley after the 2002 season. Maybe he can pull off a deal like that again.

From a team that feels it could use that extra push to get over the top?

Harden looks pretty attractive. If the Cubs don’t feel they can get anything for Harden, they’ll pull him back off waivers. They’ll offer him arbitration and try to get those draft picks for him. That’s about it. I’d rather try to get something now.

Agreed - Heilman can go.

The Harden decision depends on how the quality of the prospects/players acquired in a potential trade would compare with the draft picks gained assuming Harden rejects an arbitration offer.

He would do less damage as a starter

Knowing we’d ONLY have to see him every 5 days is a little more OK for me. Problem is, we have 5 better pitchers on the staff than him so it doesn’t really matter.

Maybe a team like the Nats or Reds...

…desperate to fill out their rotation while they’re playing out the string. I’d be shocked if a contender picks up Heilman for any reason. This season was his big shot at gaining redemption and proving he could still be a top-shelf set-up guy. It didn’t work out.

Harden is worth keeping until season's end

Offer him arbitration, then help him pack.

Could Heilman net us a 21 year old pitcher coming off of TJ that has an ERA in the NWL of under 6? If so, take the kid. Otherwise, make Heilman pack for himself.

I'd never trade Harden unless I was being overpaid....

He can be dominant. He can be quite dominant with the Cubs. He is also inexpensive (relatively speaking) and there will always be the advantage for management in negotiating a contract considering the injury issues.

I’d never trade Harden.

If the Twins rumor is true

and they claimed Harden, then I severely doubt a trade happens. If the Twins were willing to part with one of their top prospects (Ben Revere, Wilson Ramos, Danny Valencia, David Bromberg, Tyler Robertson, Aaron Hicks, Chris Parmalee), then sure, a trade might make sense (I’d be intrigued to get a Ben Revere type guy in at AA and groomed as the future CF/leadoff, although Revere might be Juan Pierre-ish).

The chances of the Twins forking over one of those guys? Bromberg and Robertson are the top starting arms in a system whose pitching has thinned a lot. Revere/Hicks are their two top guys, and for one month of Harden, that makes little sense. Ramos may be the guy that pushes Mauer to play more 1st/DH (no one is forcing Mauer anywhere) and Valencia could start at 3rd base next year.

After that? Well, taking two lower tier guys makes little sense when they don’t add any appreciable value to the system. The Twins have a relatively weak system right now.

As for Heilman, let him go. No point. If a contending team thinks he can help, save the money and move on. I’d be fine seeing Stevens/Samardzija/Caridad and so forth the rest of the year.

Harden

Harden can still be signed as a free agent during the offseason, Why not have their cake and eat it too?

I wonder if the same team claimed both thinking they want Harden and Hendry might be more willing to deal if they took Heilman too.

by puckishcubsfan on Aug 28, 2009 4:27 AM CDT reply actions

Sure, why not...

…I can hear Hendry now; “Mr. Ricketts, you don’t mind if we spend 60 mil to sign Harden do you?”

I know, I know, we have made a few mistakes and things are a bit of a mess, but I promise this one will work out for us.

"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel

by MPH73 on Aug 28, 2009 8:25 AM CDT up reply actions

Things to think about

If the Cubs want to keep Harden and try to get two draft picks for him, then he needs to be a Type A free agent. That may require that he continue to pitch, and pitch well, through September. So there is the slight chance of injury during that time period.

If the Cubs get two picks, they will have to sign them, perhaps with bonuses in the million dollar range combined. Acquiring a player in the minors from another team would not cost them anything out of pocket.

Even with both of those points, I still would be reluctant to trade Harden, but it (obviously) depends on what they could get for him.

Some clubs with young pitchers want to shut them down in September to protect their arms. Washington and Oakland come to mind. One of them might want Heilman as a starter or long reliever for that month. If he shows something, they can keep him fairly cheaply. If not, they can run up the mileage on his arm and non-tender him.
