Gameboard - Fieldtrip & investigative journalism
We certainly are seeing a lot of assumptions regarding the Bradley story and very few facts. I am proposing an investigative journalism field-trip for Sunday. I have four bleacher tickets. I invite two of the following three: Buzz on the Moon, Shawngoldman and CalCalendar and one of the following two: Wreckard, drewisshrewd. Please note your interest and if it is some other combination that would be fine. If we cannot fill with this group, other observers would be welcome.
Here is what we would do: note the booing, particularly slurs used, summon security when needed and report back to BleedCubbieBllue on Monday.
Al, I know you like your spot but suggest your presence and reporting of observations would also help all of us understand what is going on. Jessica, it sounds like you are in town. In addition to it always being good to see you, I am sure many would like to hear about what you see and hear.

I would love to go, but Sunday is my birthday, and we have people coming over.
I think it would be interesting to do this experiment, tho.

Good-bye sir.... (wipes tear from eye), you will be added to the wall of honor.
That’ll get done. Same thing that got quite a few of us banned. Is this the 3rd worst thing every to happen on this site now?

I mean, I'm game for it, but I just think that even if we get nothing it's not going to prove anything definitively.
But in the interest of science I feel we should make this as scientific an activity as possible if were going to take this seriously. A night game would be almost necessary (letting all the jerks get liquored up), Bradley has to be playing, and I have to be permitted to bring a snarky pro-Bradley sign (I’m willing to negotiate on the nature of this sign, but a sign will indeed be involved some how).
We also have to discuss whether I’m allowed to egg fans. Let me clear a few things up Shawn doesn’t live here I don’t think, he lives out west. The rest I don’t know about.

So you're not in?
Will I see you Sunday?
by WhistlerWilliams on Aug 28, 2009 2:22 PM CDT up reply actions
I'm actually in town...
but the rub is because i live out West i’m almost never in town. I’d have to talk to my family to see what they’re up to on Sunday. If they’re busy, I’ll come. If they’re not busy I’m gonna hang out with them.

would you need to do this for more than one game
you know, small sample and all :=)

It's Sunday
Whoops I missed the time. Sure I’ll go. I’ll tell you tomorrow if I can’t make it, but I’m pretty sure I can.

WhistlerWilliams fieldtrip canceled
First, apologies to those who took steps to join the fieldtrip.
Al took down this post for a while because he thought it polarizing. I disagreed in our correspondence and Al apparently had some second thoughts because he put it back up. I also had second thoughts so I am canceling.
Like many of us, I was distressed with the tone and anger in the various Milton Bradley threads. One problem I believed is that few of the posters had actually seen recent games in the bleachers (sorry if this generalization does not apply to you) and were stating “facts” based on the biases they brought into the discussion. I was trying to get together a group from the various factions so we could file a joint report about what really took place on one day. The hope was to ratchet down what has been taking place. That sounds naive when I read it.
So, enjoy the rest of the season everyone – I know I will. Whether I will continue to enjoy BCB is another matter. Let’s all remember what brought us here. We are Cubs fans and should make every effort to get along with those who honestly have that in common.

I'm sorry that you've canceled.
As I told you, I do think this is a good idea, I just didn’t like the way this post was heading.
If you are going to be in the bleachers Sunday, keep your ears open and report back to us. There shouldn’t be any “factions” here, just Cubs fans, as you say.
I think your point about that is well taken, though, and consider this: Milton Bradley has become a polarizing figure around the Cubs and Cubs fans. That is a distraction this team does not need, either now or for the next two years. He’s a good player, not a great one. His contributions on the field do not, in my opinion, trump the distraction.
He needs to be traded in the offseason.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
I'm still waiting to hear about one single thing he did this year that is so bad
that the team should get rid of him.
Did he attack someone?
He wouldn’t be a distraction if the Cubs performed this year and were still in the pennant race. He is a scapegoat, and it’s disgusting.
"Who's Bob Brenly? The guy that used to be the manager for Arizona?" ~ Alfonso Guilleard Soriano
Though I'd rather write something scathing here I'll do this respectfully.
Just because that is the narrative that is being told does not mean that it is reality. Those who have created the Milton Bradley needs to be traded or Milton Bradley is a clubhouse cancer simply has to do with their personal feelings toward Bradley. Sullivan admitted that he reports differently based on whether he likes a player or not. He is not doing his job.
I don’t think this is a conspiracy rather I believe Bradley’s personality doesn’t fit into the Beat Writer’s or some of the fan’s vision of an acceptable personality. As such they view him as harmful to the baseball environment they believe and like and report/ act towards him accordingly.
Legally, he’s done nothing wrong in his life. He is a law abiding citizen. To me, there is no reason to complain about a player’s personality unless he gets into legal trouble or his actions do something to tangibly harm the team (beat up another player, get suspended due to legal problems, drugs and alcohol abuse, etc) When deciding whether or not I want Bradley to stay, his personality has zero effect. He’s a good ballplayer and he should stay. If Milton Bradley wasn’t a good player and was getting payed 5 million, I would want him off the team too, but not because of his personality. The real question is why are people so concerned over what kind of person Milton Bradley is?
The assumption by beat writers and that a player who they don’t like personally or think is a jerk causes a team to be worse is psuedo-psychology. It’s just making things up about the mental component of the game with zero research and zero psychological theory to support their argument. The best a good psychologist would tell you regarding clubhouse chemistry and players like Milton Bradley is “It seems reasonable that their might be some negative effect on performance, but I don’t have any evidence at this time and I wouldn’t read too much into it without further examination and study.”
Al, you are not a sports psychologist, nor do you have psychological research studies to suggest what you are saying is true. You have every right to have the opinion that his contributions are outweighed, but it’s my opinion (which I have a right to) that your opinion is a somewhat weak one.
I’ll predict your response: Opinions cannot be right or wrong so do not say that my opinion is weak or bad.
Read my wording carefully I said your opinion was somewhat weak. That is different than saying it’s wrong. Just like there are good and bad interpretations to poetry or literature (not right or wrong) so are there better and worse opinions. And an opinion that relies on sports journalism and psuedo-psychology would not seem to be a strong or better opinion to me. But I could be wrong.

But more to the point over a traffic incident?
Seriously, over a misdemeanor? That still would qualify as a law abiding citizen. Did he actually go to jail? Was it for more than 3 days?
It’s not the point that I think he’s a saint or anything but this whole narrative is a bit ridiculous. There’s literally one arrest on his public record.

You still haven't answered my point over this psuedo-psychology your pulling.
Regardless of his past what you’re talking about is his present. I overstated my case slightly (it wasn’t even so far of a reach to suggest he hasn’t ever gotten into legal trouble), but that’s not the point. The point is why does his personality bother you so much?
Why do you care what he says to Paul Sullivan or Phil Rogers?

I just wish he'd shut up and just play baseball.
The rest of the team doesn’t seem to have a problem with that.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
That's fine.
If that’s why his personality bothers you so much than that is a reason and so be it.
It’s just not a particularly strong reason. Just because he doesn’t give the same quotes as Derrek Lee doesn’t mean his value is affected in any measurable way. If you want to claim it has some intangible effect that’s fine, but intangibles don’t enter into an argument about value. If you can’t explain the effect a certain factor has on a given situation/group then that factor is unknown. If something is unknown you can’t use it to describe how to describe the value of something else. All you can do with unknown variables is make nebulous and vague claims about what they could possibly do.
Intangibles, for most GMs, become the last tie-breaker on whether or not to keep a marginal player. Mental aspects of the game are another thing. Don’t confuse intangibles with psychology. Those who psychologically can’t handle the game are usually weeded out by psychological testing or just observation during the draft/minor leagues.

Amazing
That an offer to give away tickets to do some reasonable fact-finding would be “polarizing.” Is this what we’ve come to in America, that attempts to apply logic and information to questions become merely bait for partisan taunts?

I'm going to the game with family. Those tickets are already payed for.
I won’t be in the bleachers though.
