Kind of surprised they are throwing in the white towel....... Only 6 GB in their division.

Letting go of Contreras was a good move but Thome? Iffy.

And LA, is Thome going to be playing a lot of 1B? Hasn't played there full time since '04.

Interesting......

I'm surprised the Dodgers wanted Thome.

They have a first baseman, so he’s essentially agreeing to end his career as a pinch-hitter. Weird.

And Thome with his huge swing for it all approach is not the prototypical pinch hitter approach, is it?

Nope.

I may have been too swift in saying “end his career”. I suppose someone — Seattle comes to mind — might sign Thome to DH next year as he has an outside shot at 600 career HR.

Still a very strange deal.

More of a big picture.....

move.

If the Dodgers advance to the WS, they will play a max of four games in an AL park.

He would likely be their DH.

I guess.

And they gave up little to get him.

Thome's career OBP is .404...

…so he’s certainly not immune to the walk. I’ll admit to being pretty shocked when I heard of this deal on the radio this morning, but it does make a certain amount of sense for both teams. I’ve always had a lot of respect for Thome – I won’t be rooting for the Dodgers in the postseason, but I hope he acquits himself well.

Not surprised

Am I surprised they traded guys? No. Detroit’s been steady and Minnesota’s surging, while the White Sox were faltering. In saying that, they traded away an aging slugger and a bad pitcher. It really wouldn’t surprise me if they had a little surge in September, although I doubt it makes a difference. Yes, they are tossing in the towel, but it’s not like they traded two critical guys. Tyler Flowers might be more useful than Thome at this stage of their careers.

The bigger question comes this offseason for Kenny. Does he keep Alexei Ramirez at SS instead of moving Gordon Beckham there? What about veteran bats like Konerko and Dye? Can Carlos Quentin turn it around? Alex Rios has been, unsurprisingly, bad.

The bigger story to me is the Dodgers side of the trade. They seem to be loading up, with Jim Thome, and to a lesser extent, Jon Garland. Two guys that have knowledge of the AL and can provide some veteran support.

Deadline Dealing: Thome and Contreras

Kind of surprised they are throwing in the white towel……. Only 6 GB in their division.

Letting go of Contreras was a good move but Thome? Iffy.

3 games out at the trade deadline is a white flag trade. 6 games out when your team is playing (crappy) is a frank admission.

The Cubs are 6 games out of the Wild Card. The Tribune is still selling the Cubs are in the Wild Card race, but the no-shows at Wrigley signal that many Cubs fans are not buying the hope they’re selling.

The Sox have numerous players who can step in as DH. Losing Thome doesn’t really hurt this team the remainder of the season. Contreras should have been scrapped a couple months ago.

to be fair

i noted my thoughts on the trades above. to be fair, the cubs not trading harden and heilman can also be viewed in another prism. In Harden’s case, there’s a good shot of Type A and 2 picks. Outside of teams dealing with the Dodgers (dealing Tony Abreu for cash and Jon Garland is. .. eh), the chances of landing quality talent for a short term rental is slim, and the two picks could be better. In Heilman’s case, he’s actually coming off a decent August and the return on a Heilman wasn’t going to be great, so keeping him may allow them to not overwork, say, Guzman/Marmol.

I find it unlikely that many of the top Cubs guys slipped through waivers without much mention, outside of maybe Soriano. The other guys … well, the Cubs contract problem isn’t that there’s a lot of really bad contracts, as the only really bad contract is Soriano’s (the rest might be a tinge over market value, but not much). The Cubs problem, payroll wise, is the total number of contracts. That is, I think that if guys were put through waivers, most of the key guys likely get tagged, and I’m sure there may a couple guys the Cubs didn’t put through waivers.

Short of it is, there aren’t that many trade options for the Cubs.

Personally, I think we’re probably done. The team isn’t that far out in the loss column, but there’s no indication that they can get on a hot streak. The ability is there, so you never know, and in the Cubs situation, the other 4 competitors are all divisional rivals that have games remaining. That said, what I’m saying is that, there were other reasons for the Cubs not to trade guys. I would’ve been fine letting Heilman go, though.

6 games out at this point in the season

Note the deadline

Al’s post yesterday said Harden would have to be traded by noon. This article says the deadline was midnight. But it also sounds like the discussions about the deals had started days before.

The Difference

Harden was claimed off waivers making the deadline by noon yesterday.
Thome was not claimed off waivers. In order for him to be eligible during the playoffs, he had to be on the current major league roster, of his new team by 1159 PM August 31st., to qualify for post season action.

Thanks for the clarification.

That means Thome must have cleared waivers, making him tradeable any time up to midnight.

The Dodgers.....

…. acquired Thome primarily because they are looking ahead to the World Series. He’ll be the DH when they play in AL parks. I’m not kidding.

The Dodgers, despite what Loney did to the Cubs in the playoffs last year, are not 100% sold on Loney like they are on Ethier, Martin and Kemp. He almost went to the Padres in a three way deal for Adrian Gonzalez before the 7/31 deadline. Thome will play first occasionally, although it’s been years since he has, with Loney coming in for defense late in the game, and Thome will pinch hit as well until they make the Series, they figure.

re:

I wouldn’t read too much into the Dodgers going after Adrian as a sign that they are down on James. Loney’s the player he was predicted to be. He’s a good, solid first baseman. He has a home/road split that notes the impact of Chavez Ravine, IIRC. But Adrian is simply a better player and not that much older. As for their plans, I imagine Thome will get an occasional look at 1st base, but Loney will be their starting first baseman. I really think this is a look towards a World Series matchup, as well as perhaps adding a PH like Thome in case they have a late game matchup needed against, say, Brad Lidge.

Just when

I started envying the Sox for having a GM like Kenny Williams, he does this. Granted, my dream is for the Sox to go 0-162, but to get rid of Thome…bad move

by ChicagoRobb on Sep 1, 2009 11:18 AM CDT reply actions

depends

They were not planning to resign Thome after this season, with PV unable to get healthy (what a big contract for a pitcher in the minors now) Williams is circling the wagons to prepare for next season. It makes some sense.

Thome

Probably would’ve been let go in the offseason anyways. Their pretty much dead in the water right now. A miracle could happen, but probably not. He was a FA, and Kenny was building towards the future. He’s a decent DH/power bat off the bench, but they have some guys, namely Tyler Flowers, that they can try in that role (and Flowers can give AJ a break once in awhile). I think it’s actually a good move by Kenny. Sends a message that he’s willing to give guys a chance to win if the White Sox are out.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if Tyler Flowers and X pitcher is more productive than Jim Thome/Jose Contreras for them.
