Heath Bell is kind of lingering out there even though the trade deadline has gone by. He may slip through waivers and if he does, he might slip right to the Cubs. We'll see.

Because the Cubs could use an absolute lock-down closer. Gregg is solid, but personally, if the Cubs make it to the playoffs, I would prefer to see Bell in the 9th.

God I would too
But Bell would get through waivers? And the Cubs would get him?
There's no way Heath Bell will clear waivers.

if put on waivers,
the cubs should claim him, no?
Sure, after about 10 other teams below them in the standings have claimed him first.

I agree.
How the hell would Heath freakin’ Bell ever clear waivers? Maybe if the Padres mistype his name as “Heath bar” and everyone thinks he’s just a high-sugar snack.
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

why not George Bell?
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
Absolutely.
Reynolds doesn’t have a clue.

Fun little Time waster!
Bell will never clear waivers in order to engineer a trade

Just another reason why Harold Reynolds has no credibility with me

There is NO way this happens.
He isn’t making a ridiculous amount of money to where even a non contending team, say, like the Nats wouldn’t be like, “Yeah, he could help us out next year.”

I thought he got fired

Harold Reynolds?

Yes Reynolds...
he was fired by ESPN for sexual harassment of a female employee at ESPN. I don’t know if that specifically included touching female employees inappropriately, but that’s the reason he got fired.
In response to wrigleyrocker, Reynolds now works for MLB TV.
Wow, hadn't heard that.

I believe he sued ESPN
for wrongful termination, too. I don’t know how any of these matters ended.

I believe Reynolds and ESPN settled the case,
maybe a year or so ago.

I like Harold's enthusiasm, but he often says stuff that doesn't really add up.

Didnt Larry Walker clear waivers in 2004?
for the cardinals? they had the best record in MLB at the time. why didnt we block that?
A team that claims a player
has to be prepared to take on that player’s contract. The player’s current team could just tell the team to take him and the team claiming him is stuck with the player and his contract.
A couple of years ago the Diamondbacks got caught in the blocking game by claiming Byum Yum Kim (sp?) from the Marlins and Jeff Cirillo (sp?) from the Twins. Their teams told the D-Backs, thanks for taking them off our hands and the D-Backs were stuck with the players and required to pay their contract.
It’s been speculated that more players will get through waivers (that are signed to multi-year or substantially money left on this year’s contract) this year because of the economy. Blocking could be a very dangerous game this year.
Heath Bell does not fall into this category and I can’t believe there’s any way he’d clear waivers.

Our old friend Randy Myers...
was the poster child for the waiver claim gone bad. The Padres put in a claim on him in ‘98; the Jays said fine, let him go, and they were stuck with 2 years/$12M for ’99-’00. He pitched 21 games that season, plus 7 in the playoffs, then never pitched again.
Bell only has a 1 year, $1.255M contract. and is arbitration eligible next year. No way he gets through waivers.
Who did the Padres claim from the Jays in '98?

Many Ramirez as well a few years ago
Red Sox put him on waivers during a time he was really acting up and there were no takers at all.

Hahahaha!!!
Are you sure that isn’t a Joe Morgan quote? Bell wouldn’t make it past the Diamondbacks.
