Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Signed him for $750,000. Was considered a supplemental or 2nd round talent. A 2-way player out of Texas A&M playing cf and lhp. I prefer him on the mound, where he does not have major upside, but good control and 4 solid pitches. Looks like he was listed as a lefty.

Couple more things

The Cubs took him in the 5th round. Was also a draft-eligible and I was a little surprised (but glad) to hear we signed him.

Good signing

I think we signed our first ten picks. There were some really interesting picks in there. I liked Raley for his athleticism. The catcher from the Citadel Richard Jones has my eye. I don’t have any special insight other than his numbers, but a catcher with some real pop in his bat from the left side would be night if he progresses.
Overall I think this was a good draft, and you like to see them all get signed and in the system.

Jones has big time power

definitely worth keeping an eye on.

How is his defense

It’s nice to have that big time power but if it comes with big time question marks about defense then where does he play

listed as a catcher

but not really a catcher. Likely 1b. Not likely to be a good defender. He will have to mash

As a huge college baseball fan

He was really good this year. Although he really started to slack off on the mound at the end of the season – getting tired I guess.

where would you see him?

outfield or lefty pitcher?
both spots, we need help.

by tim815 on Aug 5, 2009 7:05 AM CDT up reply actions

He's better as a lefty pitcher

Wilken stated they drafted him as a pitcher. He is thinner than most pitchers and tha tmight have been so he could play the OF. If so, that might be one reason he tired at the end of the season.

Also, FYI, the $750,000 bonus is slot equivalent to the 46th pick in the draft which was a supplemental first rounder.
