One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.

One poor inning for Harden.
Long ball, Throwing error.
Let's get some runs!!!!
by Colorado Cubbies Fan on Aug 5, 2009 7:34 PM CDT up reply actions
throwing error hurts but physical mistakes happen. what is inexcusable is decision to throw to 3rd and Koyie Hill not doing his job yelling at rich to throw to first.
two mental mistakes by two people and koyie cannot afford mental mistakes being a catcher and not being able to hit worth a lick.
by MandMexpress12 on Aug 5, 2009 7:35 PM CDT up reply actions
if he did rich would not have thrown to third. and koyie would have probably shown some displeasure and gone out to talk to him.
he did neither. I think Koyie just assumed rich would go to first.

They assumed that Koyie said that but they did not know for sure.

did Hill
point at first?
Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.
by drewishdrewid on Aug 5, 2009 7:49 PM CDT up reply actions
Nope. and thats why I concluded he just assumed harden would go to first because it was so obvious.
ball was bunted back to him firmly but rich had no chance with speedy runners and getting good jump. Rich cannot see that, koyie hill has to communicate. that is on him.
by MandMexpress12 on Aug 5, 2009 7:52 PM CDT up reply actions
and that rich did not throw ball to first. it looked like rich decided on his own from watching. Plus hill layed back on his heels and just looked like he assumed rich knew to go to first.
If you saw the play it did not look like hill was out their in earnest and yelling at rich.
by MandMexpress12 on Aug 5, 2009 7:56 PM CDT up reply actions
The view I saw just showed the back
of Hill….no way I could tell if he is talking, yelling, singing or whistling from that angle
didn't he seem like he layed back on his heels. Normally the good ones rip their mask off and come running out to make sure their pitcher know.s
by MandMexpress12 on Aug 5, 2009 7:59 PM CDT up reply actions
oh come on
this isn’t Harden’s first season. He knows who is on what base and should know where to throw the ball.
Recipe for Disaster;
C'mon Cubs, hurry up and blow this so I can relax.
by Bluekoolaide on July22, 2009 3:08 PM CDT
well the ball was bunted hard right back at him so I understand how he thought he would have play
But the runners had such a great jump and that is something he cannot see with his back turned.
by MandMexpress12 on Aug 5, 2009 8:07 PM CDT up reply actions
Playing fundamental baseball by the book states that hill your captain of infield has to take care of the pitcher on a play like that.

by Bluekoolaide on July22, 2009 3:08 PM CDT
I would think if he said something Rich would not have thrown to third. he just seemed to be back on his heels like he assumed it was basic play.
by MandMexpress12 on Aug 5, 2009 7:55 PM CDT up reply actions
I guess we'll never know
unless Rich or Koyie bring it up.
Recipe for Disaster;
C'mon Cubs, hurry up and blow this so I can relax.
by Bluekoolaide on July22, 2009 3:08 PM CDT
ya. even if koyie did say something. he still should have been running out their with mask off to make sure rich got message.
esp on a bunt right back to rich where rich thinks he has chance at 3rd cuz bunt was right back to him but he had no chance cuz runner was fast and got great jump. Rich cannot see that and Koyie can and Koyie has to do a better job there of getting his attention. And regardless of that all Rich ws the one who threw the ball away not Koyie. rich had no chance of getting him but if he makes a somewhat decent throw its ony 2-0 not 3-0. and vs this kid the offense should have been able to score at least 4. do not win a lot of games not scoring at least 3 or 4.

we'll have to

by Bluekoolaide on July22, 2009 3:08 PM CDT
Guess so. Koyie has been great behind plate and maybe he said something.
but even if he did say it which I do not think he did. He has to get out there with his mask off yelling and getting riches attention and pointing to first. Look some great catchers and how they did it. Thurman munson, Johnny bench, Russel martin is very good at doing it. Stupid play by rich but ball was bunted back right at him hard. and I am not by any means blaming game on it. The mental mistake hurt but physical mistake being bad throw cost the extra run. and rich recovered for respectable game. The offense deserves blame so far.

not talking about physical talent. just talking leadership and helping out.
this play hardly settled game and majority of blame goes to harden, just think someone of it goes to hill, just a little bit. not a real big deal in long run.

I just wonder how much of this is mental. Assuming their going to win vs this guy and maybe not playing with full intensity especially on a get away day and already having won first 2 games of a series on the road. That is no the attitude of a champion. And with Greggs disaster and a tough 4 game series in colorado you got to scratch and claw for every victory. And you have to punish a 32 year old journeyman minor leaguer in a bandbox.
Thats baseball for you
beat up on their best pitcher one day and get beat on by their worst the next
Yah I agree baseball is a fickle game. but just seems no intensity. and this guy is 32 year old minor league journeyamn for reason.
seems like lack of effort is going around plus mental mistakes. Fontenot not getting tag down. on that last sac bunt, Hill having to wait for fontenot to get over to cover first, seemed like he was moving very slow. Milton pulling up on a foul ball in the first inning that is his ball. Intensity seems to be missing tonight.

The DeRo trade wasn't actually that bad.
Obviously all three prospects we got have pretty good value. The problem was signing Miles when Scales, Blanco etc. were readily available at AAA Iowa.
the only thing worth reading in Al's roundup
of this offensive stinker will be some nice shots at Miles. I don’t understand Pinella’s rule where if a starter is replaced he feels like he has to bat the replacement in the EXACT SAME spot in the order. Hey Lou, you could move Bradley to the #2 hole and guess what, he would have been on twice.
It's cause Lou thinks Miles is a top-of-the-order hitter.
Cause, you know, he’s scrappy. And he can bunt.
And cause he had one good year with the Cards that wasn’t really all that good.

I maintain this is hendry's biggest flaw
signing veterans for high salaries for marginal roles.
Gathright when you have fuld
Miles when you have Blanco, Scales etc.
With marginal roster spots, use guys from the system and upgrade midseason if necessary, doont waste 2.5m on a mediocre plater like miles.
No he hadn't
Hendry was fooled by the shiny .317 BA and didn’t realize he didn’t take any walks or hit for any power. Or play any defense. Or have any year remotely decent before 2008.
When Aaron Miles is on the field, he is the leader of the Cubs

the cubs like sending down players that actually produce i.e. Fuld, Stevens
Milton ...... see the ball hit the ball
fuld was very small sample size. people act like he is a superstar. there is a reason he has been in the minors for as long as he has.
by MandMexpress12 on Aug 5, 2009 8:05 PM CDT up reply actions
I completely forgot about Gathright
Someday we'll go all the way...
by CubsBullsBears on Aug 5, 2009 8:06 PM CDT up reply actions
he did produce though.
You can’t just say, send him down cause he’s producing? He’s setting the tone for the Cubs and he gets sent down …. what?
Milton ...... see the ball hit the ball
he had a nice 3 games. Yes I would have like to see him get more chances. but he is not the solution to all our problems.
and his games were off bad pitching.

Fun* Fact
Aaron Miles had a OPS+ of 30
Before going 0-3 today
.
.
.
*not actually fun
You think you notice most everything around you, but in reality you're nearly blind to everything outside of your current focus. Hilarious example.
Another
3/5th of the current starting rotation had a higher OPS+ than Miles entering today
You think you notice most everything around you, but in reality you're nearly blind to everything outside of your current focus. Hilarious example.
Another
the next lowest OPS+ in over 100 ABs
are Koyie Hill at 55 and Andres Blanco at 60
You think you notice most everything around you, but in reality you're nearly blind to everything outside of your current focus. Hilarious example.
Another
not only does Miles have negative VORP
if you were to reverse the sign it would be the 5th highest on the team, in just 131 PA
You think you notice most everything around you, but in reality you're nearly blind to everything outside of your current focus. Hilarious example.
Another
a team with average pitching and defense
and a lineup consisting of 9 Aaron Mileses would be expected to lose 133 games.
You think you notice most everything around you, but in reality you're nearly blind to everything outside of your current focus. Hilarious example.
Another
and assuming average defense is assuming too much
his career UZR is -10

wow, that is beyond disbelief.

I have a suggestion:
let’s get some hits into the gaps
Crooked # time!!

1 and 1/3 or 2/3's to get 'er done
or we will have to do it against Cordero
where in SoCA Bob?
or are you a USC alum?

It's your fault!

80 pitches through 6.1 innings .... that should tell you the entire game.
Milton ...... see the ball hit the ball
we have trouble with the offspeed junk artists
always have. off balance with these guys
Sori beats out the 1-6-4
"Who ever heard of the Cubs losing a game they had to have?" -Frank Chance

lehr walks 6 batters last outing and just 1 against the cubs.... wtfffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff
Milton ...... see the ball hit the ball
personally, I would sit Fonzi down and let Fuld finish the game.
sometimes you have to let guys know you won’t tolerate this kind of brain dead behavior

but way to suck the wind out of the inning. Now we can have auto-out Koiye Hill lead off next inning
Ugh, this is getting ugly.

Complete game shutout in his near future (very near).

cubs just packed it in today
chance to pick up a game on St. Louis with a very favoable pitching matchup and we have this kindof performance.
I hope they have some kind of kangaroo court for mental errors still.
Because Sori is going to give them quite a party this year.

what has samardija done wrong tonight?
induced a grounder to SS
I think the general consensus is that the Shark needs to go back to Iowa.
he can’t make it here with 1.49 pitches

granted, he can't hold a runner on
and his contract makes Miles look like a bargain but…
Then they better start caring...

there is nothing to like about Miles or the Shark
they are not very good right now.

Run credited to one Aaron Miles
Thanks Aaron, if this were hockey your +/- would be -72
So - you don't have to
score to win anymore?
No offense to help out tonight.
Also, if Jim Hendry did not feel compelled to show off why he spent a $10MM
signing bonus on Samardjia, he would still be in AAA where he belongs. NO WAY is this kid even close to being a MLB pitcher on a want-to-be championship caliber team.
I agree - though
Aaron Miles is one of the several “blew up in his face” moves by the GM.
