Firsthand Observations from Great American Ballpark
The family and I attended the first two games of this series and overall it was a fairly enjoyable experience. The drive was long (10 hrs) from northern Iowa, but with two Cubs victories to bring home, the drive back was all right. I noticed a few glaring problems while I was there, though.
1 - As most of you know, Dusty Baker's ship has finally sailed. If not now, it sailed 5 years ago. I believe the Reds of all teams would benefit with a change at the helm especially with that very young core of talent. It just seems as though he has done nothing to help them down the stretch. In the first game of the series, he seemed bound and determined to get Harang a complete game even though he was well over 100 pitches after 6 or 7 innings. There were other things I could mention too, but I digress. Dusty Baker needs to go.
2 . Willy Taveras is a poor man's Corey Patterson (or vice versa) at leadoff. Sure, he can be a difference maker on the basepaths at times, but he's got to get there first. Dusty continues to bat him first though, hoping to catch lightning in a bottle.
3. Props to the grounds crew. On Tuesday, it rained HARD from 5 am to 6 pm without letting up. We were all sitting in our hotel room thinking about what the hell to do because there was no way this game was getting played. About 20 minutes after the rains cleared (1 hr before game time) the crew had the field all cleared off ready to play. Game started on time at 7:10 and went off without a hitch. Hell, the Ohio river was flooding into parking lots and was up to the tires of several vehicles, but there was baseball to be played.
4. The Reds have lost their fans. Clearly there was more blue than red in the stands for both games we attended. The biggest highlight of the night for the Reds fans was when the groundskeepers were straddling their rakes while doing the YMCA between innings. Thats not a good sign. It seems like a ball of negativity around those parts when you mention the Reds.

Pittsburgh and Cincinnati....
Perfect examples of how mediocre franchises can lose games just as easily in a sparkling new ballpark as in a dingy old one. 1-14 stretches probably weren’t included in the marketing blitz when the place opened.
Cincinnati and Kansas City
I’ve been to Cincy 3 times since 2004 and just went to KC in July. I sense that there are a lot of ardent baseball fans in both areas, but they are very frustrated with their respective MLB teams. Cubs – Reds games at GABP are de facto home games for the Chicago National League Ball Club.
The Reds last contended in 2006 in a very weak NL Central. Cincy’s last really good team was back in 1999. The Royals last played at contending in 2003 before falling apart at the end of the season. KC’s last really good team was in 1994.
Whenever we think it’s tough being Cubs fans, just think about how bad Cincy and KC have it.

the Royals and Reds have won championships in the past 25 years
The Cubs have made the playoffs four times in the past 11 years. But they have never made it to the World Series (as we all know). Also, the Cubs were TERRIBLE in 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2006.
I’m glad I’ve been able to watch competitive Cubs teams (aside from late 2005 and all of 2006) since 2003. But I don’t think we’re much better off in the who’s-suffered-more department.

Comparing Taveras to Patterson, that is just plain mean,
somewhat comparable numbers and style though. Dusty did always like having Patterson leading off too, whether with the Cubs or the Reds, for whatever reason he thought that was useful.

For more perspective on Taveras,
I noticed in the ‘Related Fanshots,’ Al made a post about Taveras signing with the Reds back in December . Read through some of the comments. Ah, hindsight.

by the way
there is no such thing as a poor man’s corey patterson
I went to the last two games
I grew up in Chicago and I live in Cincinnati. I’m not a Reds fan at all but I’d like for them and the Bengals (except on 10/25/09) to do well because it’s good for the city. It’s sad what has happened to them the last month. Turrible.
A couple observations from the games:
One thing I noticed from the game was Soriano’s actions between pitches (I’ll preface this by saying that I am not a Soriano hater). What is he doing out there?!!? He can’t stop looking around at the scoreboard, the fans, doing that thing with his hand in front of his face. It’s stuff like that that makes me question where his head is at when he gets picked off. Is he distracted because he has new fans to look at?
FYI, In case you haven’t had a chance to see a game in person, Aaron Miles sucks just as much in person!

Yes, I do think Soriano gets distracted by fans.
I see it all the time at Wrigley.

Not sure I'd go that far - but he may just love "performing" a little too much.
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.
