September Call Ups... BCB's thoughts????

Do you think this could benefit the Cubs?

Star-divide

With September 1 approaching, I am thinking about the Cubs' possible call ups. I know there was a post about this earlier, but I have a different name to suggest.

Some guys who will be called up are pretty obvious (Atkins, Berg, Scales, etc), but a name no one has brought up is Brad Snyder. I read about people suggesting Vitters or Castro and other future Cubs stars(hopefully) being called up, but dismissed as the Cubs likely don't want to start their arbitration clock yet. Snyder, I feel, is different. He is already 27 years old, so is getting too old to be a true "prospect." He can play all 3 OF positions, but mainly plays RF in Iowa, and he bats left-handed. I realize he has just come back from a broken wrist, but if over the next month he shows that he can get back into the form he was previous to his injury (he was easily the second best hitter on the team at that time, behind only Jake Fox), does he warrant an addition to the 40 man roster? What do you guys think?

Cubs will win 79 to 83 games. Season has been over for weeks. St. Louis will eventually run away with this division. And you can print it. BLou (7/21/09)

No need, but seriously...

…. there is an identical post from less than two days ago. Please search the site before you post.

I thought we settled it that this left handed bat would be good to see

Well I got beaten up over the Prior fanshot...

because I pointed out that their was a Fanshot that said Prior was Going to be released and one that said Prior was released, so in that sprite:

This fanpost is different because the other one want you to guess who would get called up while this one want your thoughts about call-ups, two completely different things, sort of like someone going to be release and some released.

i said "duck and cover" because I figured all the would-be moderators on here

would be pounding this post as they usually do becase of the post i linked to from 2 days ago. i personally do not care what fanposts/fanshots are posted. notwithstanding the previous sentence, i will admit that this post would have made a fine comment under the previous post (but also makes a fine fanshot for all i care)

With Snyder not on the 40 man, he'd really need to bring something

the team doesn’t have beyond what Fox, Hoffpauir, Scales, and Fuld bring.

With all those guys, I don’t see another outfielder being added to the 40 man.

if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand

Minor site gripe - why doesn't the roster tab on the BCB home page

include the entire 40 man or a link to the 40 man?

if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand

Dubois?

He's hit better than Fuld at AAA

And if Hoff keeps struggling, he could bring more than him.

Fox does those things...

Fuld is up because he’s a speedy OBP guy that plays good defense across the OF (especially CF). Hoffpauir is up because he’s the only LH power bat off the bench.

DuBois doesn’t add anything that Fox doesn’t already provide, and Fox can also be a tolerable 3B and the emergency C.

I did know about the other post like this...

But no one had responded to the idea there because it is older, and I wanted to know what everyone thought. And in response to the notion of calling up Dubois, he is a righty batter, and isn’t as good a defensive outfielder as Fuld or Snyder, and I think the Cubs better hitters are all RH, so Dubois seems to buried too far. Also, he has been in a season-long platoon with John-Ford Griffin.

Snyder's been hurt a lot of this year.

Once Reed Johnson is activated, and Hoffpauir recalled (presuming he is sent down tomorrow for Soto), the Cubs will have enough outfielders and bench players.

I'll toss this on the fire.

A reason to not call up “borderline” people in September is to keep the 40-man roster as clean as possible. With Waddell being released, we would seem to have 35 plus two (cotts, chad fox can be transferred to the 60 if needed) on the 40 man.

I haven’t figured out who we will want to ‘add’ before November (the deadline for adding before the Rule 5 Draft). I also don’t know if we want to have 40 “on the list”, as we may want to go Rule 5 shopping again, though that ought to be based on if we have 40 worth keeping. (I’d be interested in adding an outfielder with pop, if one is available, for the record.)

I still think we should add a real catcher to the 40 man before September, so as to allow us to use both of our catchers and Jake Fox in their proper roles. No point in having a key September series with only one backstop if someone gets dinged.

It's more than just that.

As I posted in the other post regarding this, teams rarely recall more than five or six players in September, maybe carry 30 or 31 players. There simply isn’t enough playing time for more than that.

As far as the 40-man, adjustments can be made after the postseason.

agreed

and if we would add a player, they would take up a 40 man slot through the winter. or have to be released (casey mcgahee).

by tim815 on Aug 7, 2009 8:32 AM CDT up reply actions

Expect an addition or two from outside the organization

I think the team will add a veteran bench bat like Philly did with Matt Stairs last year. Who would fill the bill? Jeff Blum? Kevin Millar? The shattered remains of Cliff Floyd?

I wouldn't be so sure about that...

I'm saying

scales, atkins, stevens, mathes (i haven’t seen him mentioned at all and he’s good,) maybe chris robinson, john-ford griffin, blake parker, justin berg, maybe casey fossum?

check out mathes’ stats here http://iowa.cubs.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?pos=P&sid=t451&t=p_pbp&pid=448588
