Cubs - Cardinals; Honor must be restored
A few days ago, BCBer memphiscub posted this Fan Shot regarding an anonymous Cardinals fan who'd sponsored the 2008 Cubs page at Baseball Reference, and left an...um, unkind caption for readers.
Normally, I'd let this slide. But then Viva El Birdos, a fine SB Nation site blogging the Cardinals, picked it up, and have spent the last few days hyping it up, asking readers to vote on a better caption. I'll spare those with delicate sensibilities samples, but let's just say that the recommendation involving a dog's arse is probably not the worst one suggested.
Now, I'm not petty -- okay, I am sometimes, but that's another story. I couldn't let this stand. As such, Cubbie Nation -- my web site -- has purchased the home page for the 2004 Cardinals, a World Series team, if you recall, and would like to enlist your help in writing a caption. Right now, I'm leaving my original placeholder on the site:
St. Louis - Armpit of America since 1876
I think it's good, but something tells me that a smart reader out there has a better idea.
I'll leave this post open for suggestions, as well as creating a forum at Cubbie Nation. Stop by, leave a suggestion or two, and I'll pick a winner at the end of beginning of the next home stand. Winner gets a couple of nuggets from my box of Cubs swag; all unopened, new goodies. And yes, I do have bobble heads.
Worst idea gets my White Sox Beer Guy figurine. You've been warned.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Yet St. Louis writers are worried about the rivalry not being strong
No offense to you Damen, but I thought it was dumb when they did it, so I have to say the same thing again.
In defense of all Cubs fans though, we don’t pretend to be above the Cardinals and pretend like we don’t care.
Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.
None taken...
It’s not my usual sort of thing, but since it’s out there, I think it’s something we can have a fun time with.

I have now changed my mind
I did myself the displeasure of reading the VEB thread and have decided that I am not above this.
Perhaps something about Tony LaRussa never having success without a steroid user, his DUI is always fun. I suppose the other alcohol thing is off limits, they did get swept in 2004 so that could be played with.
Upon a paragraph of thinking out loud, I think the armpit thing works better than any idea I could have.
Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.
I'm going through the same struggle.
Part of me doesn’t want to stoop to the level of calling an entire fanbase nasty names, but another part of me can’t help wanting to stick up for the team I support.
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.
the Cardinals fans are not dumb
no matter what you may think. As a die hard, lifelong Cubs fan that has lived in Saint Louis for 25 years, I will tell you they are extremely knowledgable and generally well mannered. That doesn’t mean there aren’t a few that have manners that leave something to be desired, just as there are some Cubs fans that have the same affliction. They push that button because they know they can, and it works. Do the right thing….wish them well and do not reward the ones who act poorly with the attention they crave by acting badly.

beautiful!!!!
I guess it could always
Cardinal Nation: at least they are not from Milwaukee
Cardinal Nation: Making White Sox fans seem classy
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
LOVE
The second one. That’s phenominal

I could go on for days….I still have not worked in a house with wheels or marrying your sister or anything like that…

Here's a novel idea...
Since I hope Cubs nation is classier than our rivals, why not put something tasteful up? Wouldn’t that be unexpected.
But if you don’t want to go that far, how about something about the Cubs instead of the Cardinals:
Congratulations on the lucky season Cardinals!
- Your classy friends from Chicago, the greatest city in the world.
I love it!
I’d just change the word “classy” to something more poignant… can’t come up with something quickly off the top of my head… Help.
One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.
Gracious?

Rise above it
This is tacky and petty and ultimately makes everyone involved look bad. Sponsor baseball reference because it is a great, but under-funded website, not so you can get in a dig at some other team’s fans.
Actually...
Cubbie Nation sponsors a number of pages, paid for well before this. But I’m I’ll for putting it to the fans; if that’s ultimately what people want, that’s what I’ll do.
by Damen Jackson on Aug 7, 2009 9:54 AM CDT up reply actions
See above.
If we can sponsor a Cardinal page by being CLASSY… it would make their sponsorship even more embarrassing.

For what it's worth
It was stupid when they did this over at VEB and it’s stupid to do it here at BCB. It’s beneath you guys just as it was beneath the members at VEB who did that.
As one of the moderators of VEB, I have to say that I’m pretty embarrassed that such a childish and juvenile endeavor got going over at VEB. I’ve let them know what I think of their enterprise and have closed the comments on the fanpost. In general, I think Orval is right when he said that this makes everyone look bad. Just reading the quotes of some of you here, it certainly has made VEB look bad. On behalf of VEB, and even those idiots who got this thing going, I apologize.

As a citizen of fair St. Louis
And a Cubs fan, I can say that just as Cub fans range from drunk people at Wrigley who act like it’s a nightclub it’s cool to say you went to, to the 90 year old scoring in his book, having been a cub fan since 1932, Cardinals fans vary a great deal, too. Some are petty, always heckling, and some drink less Budweiser.
In general, I support a classy message on their page.
Just my $0.02.
"Cubs Suck" in the Snow And Other Stuff
I thought that snow message was funny because it was done right outside the latest Busch Stadium in what is supposed to be Ballpark Village some day in St. Louis. I’ve seen the T-shirts “Choke: The Official Drink of the Chicago Cubs” and posters that said “Bartman Rules”. I didn’t think that stuff was out of bounds. I can take a joke. It’s only baseball after all.
If the caption regarding the 100 years of Cubs futility had been put on a Cardinals page, then that would have been fine by me. I’m a little surprised that BR would put the derogatory captions on the 2004 Cardinals and 2008 Cubs pages, but the money from the sponsorships is green (not red or blue) and pays the bills.
I like the city, St. Louis, well enough. Because of geography, I’ve seen more Cubs games there than in any other city. Most Cardinals fans that I’ve known have been nice to me over the years. They take verbal jabs at me from time to time, but it’s mostly been good natured.

I've used these for quite some time.
St. Louis – Louis & Clark figured the uncharted wilderness was a better option.
St. Louis – when Minneapolis flushes, it lands here.
I think the key should be originality. From my vast experiences, Cards fans have very little of that, clinging to 1908. That’s what makes the L&C option all the more funny; most of their fans don’t know who they are.

Sorry, after what two Cards fans did to my wife and SIL
outside Wrigleyville Sports while my brother and I were inside shopping, I find it hard to feel any sympathy for the honor of the Cardinals. In fact I feel none. Those boys would not have left Wrigleyville under their own power as angry as I got (they wisely told us as we were driving to Harry Carey’s after the game to get Ryne Sandberg’s autograph what happened).
That said, I know two Cards fans at work who are perfect Southern gentlemen and who I can have great baseball dialogue on and who are respectful contrarians who are credits to their chosen franchise. If only the two jerks who badgered our wives were that classy, fine.
All things considered, the Red Turds are a loathed abomination that only the White Shlox can arouse more animosity within my Cubbie Blue heart.

As a Cards fan
I found the whole thing extremely tacky. I don’t mind a little rubbing between Cards and Cub’s fan. But I found it pretty unsportsmanlike for a Card fan to sponsor a Cub’s BR page with trash talking. The Card’s mod at Viva El Birdos agreed and closed comments off the thread

cards/cubs
long way to go. since 03 the cubs have won the division 3 times and the cards 4 times. i think the astros won once.
As a Cubs fan who lives in St. Louis,
I find this petty crap exactly that. Petty, childish and stupid. Most of my friends here are Cardinals fans and I’m pretty open about the fact that I’m a Cubs fan. Silly ribbings aside, we all recognize that we’re fans of the game and part of the best rivalry in baseball. Most are classy.
Leave this petty shit for the Red Sox/Yankees fans.
