Beat you by probably 2 seconds. I’m so excited. This is only the second time I’ve ever been first on a game thread or Al’s pregame in over 2 years of being a regular here.
The fact that I’m this excited proves I need to get out more.

These are the times that try Cubs fans' souls
Cubs really had no business winning this game but did anyway.
Despite all the injuries, all the slumping and the occasional bad baseball defensively, this team still is hanging in there.
Last year it was too easy and it ended badly. This year hasn’t been easy. Not saying how it will end, but … never give up.
Chins up, troops. Assure that series split tomorrow.

A split will be fine.
Not sure how the Phillies series will turn out. They have lost the first 2 games against the Marlins and a few of their bats have cooled off.
I’m in Chicago for the Phillies series and the friday game against the Pirates. Going to the games with Phillies fans. Should be interesting!
Have fun
I think the Cubs could have won the series in Philly. This must be your first game in person, considering you’ve been following baseball for only a couple of weeks … :-)
(BTW, I was at the first game of that series in Philly. Nice ballpark, although the area around it is kind of barren.)
by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 8, 2009 10:23 PM CDT up reply actions
I was at that first game at CBP
Nightmare. I knew Lilly was hurt because he’s a better pitcher to be hit around like that. Got a lot of great text messages during that game!
The Phillies and the city wanted the new ballpark to built in Center City (downtown) but the neighborhood the Phillies wanted to build it in was against it. It helped that a powerful PA state senator lived in that neighborhood and was against it too. That PA state senator was just found guilty of 132 counts of fraud was only sentenced to 5 years!?!?!
Fumo?
I think that’s his name? I remember seeing it in the papers while I was there.
Yeah, that game sucked. Lilly got pushed back because of his knee, but as soon as Ibanez hit that rope to center field, you knew something was amiss. Did get to see Chad Durbin get the rare three-inning save. And saw Greg Luzinski at his barbecue stand, looking big but not as enormous as I’d been led to believe.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 8, 2009 10:34 PM CDT up reply actions
Yes
Vince Fumo. The defacto mayor. If you wanted state money for anything in Philadelphia, you went to him. He had the backing of all the unions.
Bull’s Barbeque is underrated. It’s good food. Most people at the park will go to Tony Luke’s, Rick’s or get the Schmitter. Lines are too long at those places for me.
Luzinski coached high school football and baseball for awhile. My high school football team played his team in the NJ catholic state playoffs. Got crushed. I was a backup and got a lot of playing time that game because the game was out of hand by halftime.
Luzinski a Chicago-area guy originally
They still talk about some of the homers he hit in high school. And, of course, about his time with the White Sox.
I had heard he had coached high school ball in Jersey.
He and Schmidt always used to kill the Cubs, Schmidt more so than just about anybody.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 8, 2009 10:45 PM CDT up reply actions
I'll be with a few
people who will be wearing Mitchell and Ness Schmidt jerseys to the games next week. The powder blue ones too.
People always try to find on video or dvd the game in 1976 where Schmidt hit 4 HR’s (I was only a few weeks old) and the game from 1979 where it was 23-22
Remember both those games
That 23-22 game was a classic. They used to rerun that game on WGN in the middle of winter for a few years after that. And of course, Schmidt hit the winning homer.
That four-homer game was disgusting, too, at least from my viewpoint. Although not as disgusting as a powder-blue, ’70s-era Phils jersey. :)
How did you become a Cubs fan?
by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 8, 2009 11:00 PM CDT up reply actions
Sometimes I wonder why
I’m a Cubs fan.
I was born in ’76, somewhat remember the ’80 Phillies.
Dallas Green went over to the Cubs as the GM in ‘81. Brought a lot of ex-Phillies, including my favorite player Larry Bowa. Some minor leaguer got thrown into that deal. Wonder what happened to him? My dad and I started following them. I’ve stuck with them ever since. Took a lot of abuse in ’89 after the NLCS. I was glad I had a company meeting in Anaheim when the Phillies won it last season
It’s a lot easier to follow the Cubs now then it was back then. Back then, I had to watch sportscenter for 30 second highlights of the Cubs or read the local papers. Now I have the extra inning package and can read the Chicago papers online
That's a non-traditional story
Usually if an out-of-towner is a Cubs fan, it’s because of WGN. Pretty cool. Dallas Green was the best thing to happen to the Cubs back then. We had been thorugh a lot of miserable seasons before he and guys like Sarge Matthews showed up.
Sorry for being a bit of an ass to you tonight. When things go bad on the field, the avalanche here can be trying. Anybody who thinks well of Larry Bowa is OK by me.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 8, 2009 11:34 PM CDT up reply actions
Well he was not a minor leaguer
just a very young bench guy. Turned out pretty well.
