Zambrano to 15 Day DL

Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano will be put on the 15-day disabled list Saturday because of a sore back, major league baseball sources told ESPNChicago.com

Article also, said Jeff Stevens will most likely be brought back up from Iowa to replace Big-Z on the roster. Glad to see Stevens back up but, not at the expense of Zambrano. Hopefully he won't be out that long but, I wonder if this means LIlly could be back sooner and not take the rehab starts before coming off the DL.

Thank you for pointing it out

I usually don’t like to point those things out, and I was kinda waiting for someone else too.

Not sure what they'll do............

for Zambrano’s next turn. Read today that Lilly is 7-10 days away from returning. Unless they have someone in the minors capable of starting a game (by Zambrano’s next turn Lilly could be ready to go by then) I think they just throw Marshall out there again and keep their fingers crossed he does better than last night.

by Rkfd Die Hard on Aug 8, 2009 4:32 PM CDT reply actions

The move is retroactive to August 2.

So Z could be back on the 17th, by which time Lilly should also be back.

Tough luck with Boston but he should be more effective in the NL and can be a closer if Gregg doesn’t come around.

CSN kept asking if fans thought he would be good for the bullpen

Something like 68% said they would want him. If we could do the same with him as we did with BJ Ryan I would be all for it but I doubt Smoltz would want to do that at this point in his career. I think he’d rather retire. Wouldn’t hurt to ask.

Anyone know how good he’s been at Wrigley? I’m not good at finding that stuff

Dumb question maybe....

but I never understood how a player can be retroactively placed on the DL. How does that work? Is that retroactive date up to the team’s discretion or do they have to have evidence of some injury at a certain time to shelf him for less than 15 days?

by sgerring21 on Aug 8, 2009 6:30 PM CDT reply actions

It is retroactive to the day after the last game the player was officially in

He’s a great pitcher and good for the team, on the field, off, and in the clubhouse. Sucks that he is injured. At least it’s not dehydration again.

Carlos doesn't test my patience or goodwill at all

“Carlos being Carlos” is part of the deal, it makes him what he is – a flawed #2 starter on a team who treats him like a #1 starter.

Testing patience and goodwill is reserved for guys like Aaron Miles and Carlos (walk the first batter to make it a challenge) Marmol.

it may be soon to trade his ass

only lawyers should care for grammar are you one?

by angryandy on Aug 9, 2009 1:01 AM CDT reply actions

No, he's not always hurt. He has been on the DL 4 times in his career. He has been unusally

healthy for a major league pitcher. He has had some minor ailments but he has never had a major elbow or shoulder problem. He has never had major surgury and he has pretty much been able to answer the bell when called. You may not like the way he reacts on the field, but you can’t accuse him of “always getting hurt”.

There is the little measure of a NTC

He won’t accept a trade to the AL because he likes hitting too much. And why should he accept a trade to any NL who is not a perennial threat to make the playoffs? And he wouldn’t want to go to the Dodgers because he wouldn’t hit as well at Chavez Ravine.

So that leaves the Rockies, the Phillies, and the Mets. Yeah, I really want Carlos Zambrano to be on one of those teams. Unless the plan is to pray that he gets so amped up when the Cubs face him in the playoffs that his head explodes.
