Big mistake letting Marquis go

Worse Chicago Cub move of the year. Jason Marquis to get his 13th win of the season tonight. Carlos Zambrano is on the disabled list and Ryan Dempster was a one year wonder and most likely will be a set up man again in the future. What were the Cubs thinking getting rid of this capable pitcher who will win comeback pitcher of the year and flirt with twenty wins. Hopefully the Cubs will not repeat this soon

Big mistake letting Marquis go

He only had one year left on his deal and actually did a quality job in 2008. Stays healthy, takes the ball every 5th day, and can be counted upon. His contract was ridiculous, but it was even more ridiculous to eat part of his salary to get rid of him.

Dempster was a one year wonder who many of us cringed when he got his big fat new contract. But hey, Donuts Hendry is the king of bad contracts. He’ll keep spending this franchise into oblivion.

Do you not realize we HAVE to spend money to field a good team

My god man, can you say anything different?

How about acknowedge the fact demo has been going through he’ll on earth at home for alot of the season…

And maybe you should try not to be such a dick for making fun of hendry for being overweight. I am about 50 lbs overweight, I have chemical imbalances in my body. I work hard everyday of my life, and don’t overeat, but i’m still overweight. So stop saying that. Some people can’t help it!

Sorry if I stepped over a line here Al, but I can’t stand this guy anymore…he calls people names, and adds nothing to this website.

Marquis was only slightly overpaid, and the Cubs can afford to do that.

We shouldn’t have signed Dempster to such a large deal.

I had no problems with trading Marquis and I still don’t. He’s been good but not stellar this season, much like the guys in our rotation. Randy Wells has been a helluva lot better fifth starter than Marquis would have been.

The problem is

It’s kinda hard to sign a 17 game winner with a sub-3 ERA for cheap. He wanted big money, and that was the only way he was coming back. It was either Dempster or Marquis, and Demp had proven a lot more than Marquis in his time with the Cubs.

really?

He had one good year as a starter and two mediocre years as a closer with WHIPS hovering near 1.5; he, like Bradley, did an extraordinary job of cashing in on a career year which will more than likely never be repeated, unfortunately for us, Hendry couldnt see through that.

I think it wouldve been fairly easy to predict this wouldve occurred, he hadnt been a starter in a long time. I wouldve had no problem paying more money for someone who was a safer play, Lowe for example, theyre fairly similar this year, but he’s got the longer track record as a starter

I admit I didnt want Marquis moved, he is nothing fancy, but a durable pitcher. Hendry over paid him, and moved him. I am not going to gripe too much about it. Unlike many, I do not have a hatred for Marquis, and never cthought we were screwed when he was starting. But I feel the same way with Randy Wells starting.

comeback pitcher of the year
What were the Cubs thinking getting rid of this capable pitcher who will win comeback pitcher of the year and flirt with twenty wins.

I believe you mean the Comeback Player of the Year Award and he won’t win that cause it’s not like he lost 20 games last year with an ERA over 8.00. As stated above, he is a dependable pitcher that will not ‘wow’ anyone, but has had a great start to the season. With the Cubs starting pitching depth, they could stand to let Marquis go, and they have been able to work their way through the injuries to the starting staff just fine this year.

I think your time machine is broken.

Oh…wait…you don’t have a time machine?

Here’s the thing that bothers me about these posts. It’s not the negativity. I can handle that. It’s the fact that people show up, boldly pronounce what will happen in the future, not, mind you, what they think will happen but what will actually happen with 100% certainty.

And then when they are wrong they are nowhere to be seen. Until something that vaguely falls in line with their grand predictions occurs and then they are back to shout “I told you so” to the heavens.

How about some effing accountability?

Marquis will end up with

14 wins. And that is a few more than anyone, besides maybe Jason himself, and his own mother, would have predicted.

I didn’t like the Dempster signing, still don’t, and I imagine my dislike will grow to hatred of the contract in the next few years. I would rather have had Derek Lowe for the same money. More consistant.

Big win tonight. Need tomorrow as well. Go Randy Wells!

Cubs could never have signed Lowe

He would not play for Lou. The two did not get along his rookie season with the Mariners and Lowe has been critical of Lou ever since.

by IllinoisCubs on Aug 9, 2009 12:44 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Really? No one could have predicted that? Really?

Because Jason Marquis’s problem has never been racking up wins. He won 14 games in 2006. He won 15 in 2004. He’s been lucky in that sense. But, y’know, judging a starting pitcher on wins and losses is just kinda silly.

I have no problem trading Marquis

We have pitching depth, and he was making too much money for his role as a quality 4th or 5th starter.

However, I do have major beef, in that we got ABSOLUTLEY nothing for him in return. We had a quality major league starting pitcher, and dealt him a way for nothing. That’s the problem.

When you trade a mediocre pitcher on the wrong side of 30 with one year left on his deal...

You tend to not get very much back. Yes, he’s having a fantastic season, but hindsight is 20-20. Coming into this season, Marquis was a mediocre, back-of-the-rotation guy who was getting paid much more than he should have been.

This team is knee-deep in starting pitching and Marquis was the one player that the Cubs could aford to lose and still be OK. He’s, having a good year, good for him. Not much of a loss, let’s move on.

Randy Wells

If there had been Jason Marquis, there likely wouldn’t be Randy Wells.

Also, there’s no guarantee that Jason Marquis pitches as well with the Cubs as he has in Colorado. His career numbers certainly don’t suggest it.

To have a confident Randy Wells who has found a winning formula and will be fairly cheap for the next three-four years and has outpitched Marquis this year is much much better than anything Marquis has to offer.

Don't you get it?

Trading Marquis was a monopolist move by the Tribune Company, tripling its profits and further keeping the man down…only a true badass non-conformist would get that….or is that conforming to the non-conforming badass stereotype?

by sgerring21 on Aug 10, 2009 6:24 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Question Marquis will win 20 games

I doubt Marquis will get 20 wins this season; maybe 16.

The Marquis trade last winter comes off as an impatient move. For a team willing to pickup his salary, the Cubs should have gotten a better player or somebody with more potential in return. If nobody was interested in giving anything for him, then waiting could have gotten better results.

Sometimes, and I think this is common, the budget is something that has to be adhered to at the present time. Applying that possibility to this case, no deal for anything else would be possible unless Marquis was moved when he was, and they really couldn’t “save” $ allowed either because they couldn’t assume the expense would be allowed when they did want to spend. This could happen when the company is publically owned or, like the Tribune, has strict debt obligations to meet. Whatever, the process doesn’t allow for waiting for the right deal, or separating a plan over a period of time.

Coincidence – Marquis has been a part of successful teams.

More than one mistake

Marquis- got nothing for him, unless you consider Vizcanio something.
DeRosa- got nothing but a few “fringe” relievers.
Wood- got nothing for him (I don’t really care much about letting him go).
Miles- doozy of them all.
Heilman- his work speaks for itself.

We won’t be complaining if Stevens and Gaub (uh, and the other dude) turn into solid contributors in the bullpen. And a game like last night’s should reinforce the importance of such players.
