The Shiny New SBNation.com

If you have in the past gone to the main page of the group of blogs to which BCB belongs, SBNation.com, it was before today simply an aggregator, listing all the 212 blogs and their most recent posts.

Today, SBNation.com is relaunched as what we hope will be the premier destination for sports information anywhere. We seek to do on a national level what each SBNation network blog already does for its team or sport: provide the most timely, engaging and highest quality fan perspective information and conversation on the web.

When you go there you'll find articles and links from many sources around the internet on any sport you're interested in, with links to SBN blogs for discussion. There's also commentary from the SBN editors, but the coolest feature is what we're calling "StoryStream" -- that is, whenever an article is posted, it will be continuously updated with new information about that story whenever it becomes available. Here's a detailed description of what the new page is all about.

It's a Cubs off day -- the first one in 16 days -- so take some time and have a look through the new SBNation.com. All of us at SBN hope you enjoy it.

My initial reaction is

way too much info on one page. The MLB specific page has a lot going on. Still I think with a little getting used too it will be less confusing.

Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.

My thoughts as well

A lot going on in little space. But I feel like it could really grow on me.

It's all organized by sport.

… and also by major story. The top stories are in the middle; you can find the sport you’re interested in on the right; and little quick takes on the left. Take a while and explore it.

I think it's awesome!

It’s what I’ve always longed for: a sports publication written by fans. You get insightful no BS opinions from people who watch their team every day, as apposed to the slanted national ESPN coverage.

it does have a lot going on

but it is like Union Station for the blogs, and each link is a train leaving the station

Excellent analogy!

That’s exactly what it’s supposed to be, in addition to being a central location for sports links from around the web.

Looks pretty good to me.

Of course, I’m pretty much a “baseball only” guy, so all the coverage doesn’t interest me all that much. But it’s pretty well organized and there’s a ton of baseball stuff to peruse.

If you scroll to the bottom there’s a “Recent Posts From Our 212 Sports Blogs” table that lets you see everything going on in the SBNation blogworld. BCB appears prominently among the baseball blogs. Very cool.

Oh, and I was thinking of posting this as a Fanshot, but here’s a Washington Post article from this morning covering the business side of SBNation’s recent expansion efforts.

I had already been in the habit of going to the main page

and looking at the “recent posts” list. When I looked at it today, I was pleasantly surprised to say the least!

I'll repost this....it may be more about familiarity for me..

but I liked the old set up for it’s ease of finding things. The "recent articles" that you could click to different sports is now buried on the bottom. Having the "list" of blogs split up by teams and sports in the main body was also easier to look up particular teams. (Granted, I don’t search a lot….the occasional Cubs or Purdue opponents, or if there’s a developing story in the world of sports, like the Shawne Merriman choking).

Now it’s just kind of all over the place, and really crowded on the main page. I guess the "crowdedness" is what bothers me the most. It’s not an easy page to look at.

I go to SB Nation for the blogs, go to SI.com or Yahoo.sports if I want to read a particular story or look up a box score. I guess I go here for a fan’s perspective on what’s happening in sports. I guess the goal is to make me just stay on one site?

I’ll have to explore it some more, but first impression isn’t good for me.

Don't.

I tweak out if mine dies during the day and i have to suffer a couple of hours without it. Its like crack.

If you can avoid it, never EVER get a cell phone.

I plan to get a pay as you go cheapie

and use it very little but now that I am no longer a 9-5 person and have to try to get some small jobs I find I must be able to keep in touch and YOU CAN NEVER FIND PAY PHONES. I am thinking of getting a device for e-mail and text messages and thus really not using the phone but for emergencies. I am trying to figure a way not to give my mother the number.

Yes I have been looking at it but it is kind of backward

Might be awkward for business communication. I am checking out BOOST but it seems to get some terrible reviews.

Better than last night

After I wrote up the Chiefs game, I saw the banner headline “The new SBNation.com is live” at the top of the page. I thought “Hmmm, I don’t know anything about that” so I clicked on the headline. I got the screen that says “We’re sorry sports fans” and the whole message that they’ve been made aware of the error.

You can imagine what cynical comments went through my head at that time. So yes, what they have now is better than that.

you know how sometimes you get in your car...

…and some little prankster had already turned on the radio, wipers, blinkers, fan, etc. so when you turn the ignition, everything is blaring out at you all at once?

That’s how I felt when I went to the new SBNation site.

Put me down for a “meh”. Or maybe that should be “MEH”…

Good Lord, The Black Eyed Peas Are Awful

That’s the very first thing I saw when I went to the site.

Why???

by kanderber on Sep 10, 2009 7:47 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I can't see anything of that nature...

… which leads me to believe you can because you’ve yet to install firefox with Adblock Plus.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865

You can even turn ads back on for pages you appreciate (and trust won’t be obnoxious) so that writers like Al can be rewarded for their work. And then you’ll be able to avoid the Black Eyed Peas, anything about Classmates.com, those ones with that weird droopy stomach, and everything else horrible out there.

It's not an ad...

It’s this: http://www.sbnation.com/2009/9/10/1025101/good-lord-the-black-eyed-peas-are

The same guy who wrote that has wrote another, which is currently top left. And the original is under that. Just seems pretty weird to see that on a site that’s trying to be “the premier destination for sports information anywhere.”

I’ve definitely tried to drive the ball more, and I’ve accomplished that — more homers, more RBIs — so that would probably be my explanation to the strikeouts vs. walks," Theriot said. "I’m just being more aggressive, more offensive when I’m at the plate.

2009 .718 OPS and 85 OPS+
