Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

From what I get out of the following article, Fox is sitting because he doesn't listen to the coaches and hurts their feelings by doing so. Well, boo hoo hoo Piniella I suppose it makes you feel better to make sure he watches the sinking ship fail to generate any offense from the bench. That'll teach him to swing so hard.

The story about Fox has been posted here before.

Sometimes, coaches just have to let talented players play. They (the coaches) aren’t always right.

WTF?

Did we read the same article?

It starts out with him being labelled as having an attitude problem. In the happy ending of this article, Fox improved his hitting by finally listening to coach Dave Keller.

Agree!

It seems like he had these problems 5-6 years ago and has learned from past mistakes.

I actually talked to Fox today before the game

it was at 9am…asked him if he was playing..he said probably not….

did you make someone mad?

" I don’t know,,it’s just one of those things. I asked them yesterday if I did something wrong and they said no…..

me——well I guess mashing the ball is a bad thing.

he laughed and walked off…

huh?

Maybe I’m missing something here but in the past, Cubs coaches were taken to task by letting the likes of Corey Patterson not willing to listen to yet being allowed to do as he wishes. I, for one, am glad to see that a player, regardless of his place on the team, is being told that when you don’t listen to your coaches, you sit.

by dmlichte on Sep 12, 2009 7:32 PM CDT reply actions

So players should sit even when they are clearly more talented than others?

That won’t win you many games.

Seems to me...

… that for quite some time we all felt that Corey Patterson and Felix Pie were more talented than others, yet due were allowed to play despite their inability to be coached. Yes, you sit players when what its called for, and if you’ve got guys who think they’re bigger than the team or that they don’t need to alter their approach, that is a great reason.

And, of course

we rail at Alfonso Soriano ‘not wanting to change’ some of his current ways of approaching hitting.

But the poster implies that Fox is justified in ‘not listening to coaches.’

This "Scales in LF" business has to stop, immediately.

The Cubs are going nowhere, and they need to find out what they have in Jake Fox. He should be playing somewhere, every day.

Bobby Scales is not in the plans. He does not help the Cubs win now, and he certainly isn’t going to be on the 2010 roster.

So why does Hendry allow Lou to play his little games?

Lou is running a competition for backup outfield

He decided to not bother with it during Spring Training this Year because it will mess up his leadoff man competition, closer competition, starting pitcher competition, and most likely to wind up in his doghouse competition.

Or maybe Hendry is letting Lou make the case of why we need a new manager...

And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.

LOU HAS BEEN AROUND

baseball forever . Hendry knows that Lou is fixed in his ways . Don’t expect to see Fox on the lineup card anytime soon . Can’t wait for Rickett’s to take charge . Right now the Cubs are a boat drifting out to sea .

because one guy who has no history of ignoring coaches has

an ops of 747 the past couple weeks and the other who has a history of battling with coaches has an ops of 278. Plus the former is an above average fielder while the latter is a below average fielder. Frankly, I hope this is a ploy to hide the fact that Fox isn’t all that good and thus up his trade value. I hope Hendry is demanding these “little games”.

by shoemile on Sep 13, 2009 1:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Exactly...

I’m not sure why people are having so much trouble seeing that Fox has looked awful lately at the plate. When Fox was tearing the cover off the ball, his defense could be overlooked. Now that he’s striking out at a 50% rate and has one hit in his last 20 AB, it’s hard to justify putting him on the field.

by SouthernCub on Sep 13, 2009 7:54 AM CDT up reply actions

As I posted elsewhere....

… it’s hard to hit when you don’t play. He has started only two games this month.

He stopped hitting BEFORE he lost his playing time, though...

He had the most AB in any month in August, and the second half of August is when his numbers took a dive. He hasn’t hit at all in September. Part of that could be a lack of playing time, but he lost the playing time because he stopped hitting – not the other way around.

but he lost the playing time because he stopped hitting – not the other way around.

lou has shown several times this year he has no problem playing people that cant hit

people who swing at the first pitch should get punched in the face

Honestly,

Him getting back-to-back starts out there last week was when I mentally gave up on this season. I know Lou loves those conventional LH/RH platoons, but seriously.
