Congratulations To Ichiro On His 9th 200-Hit Season
Amazing factoid: since 2001 Ichiro has had nine 200-hit seasons.
Since 2001 the entire National League has had 17 200-hit seasons (if Hanley Ramirez gets 15 more hits this year, it'll be 18).

Saw the highlight last night on MLB Network.
Amazing stuff. Ichiro is so cool out there and he’s still got pretty impressive speed.

ichiros the man
its a shame no one records his pre allstar game “speech”
people who swing at the first pitch should get punched in the face
Hits
He would have been the one who beat Pete Roses hits record if he could have played 20 or so seasons in the MLB.
Ichiro could still get 3000 hits in MLB....
… despite not starting in the USA until he was 27.
The guy who might beat Rose’s record, if he wants to play that long, is Derek Jeter.

Ichiro
is going to break Rose’s record if you add in his NPB stats. He should get 3000 hits in the US. He had 1278 in Japan, so 3000 will put him over Rose’s 4256.
I have to admit I never thought Jeter had a chance at Rose’s record, but you’re right, he’s right on pace with what Rose did. The issue is going to be whether or not he’s willing to do it. He’s probably competitive enough, but Rose really wasn’t good enough to play his final four seasons. Rose had to go to Montreal and then play/manage a good Reds team that was actually willing to put a drawing card ahead of winning baseball.
That was silly, because those Reds teams weren’t bad, despite having a Pete Rose/Tony Perez (A combined 87 years old in 1985) platoon at first. If they’d have say, moved Dave Parker to first base and put a young kid named Paul O’Neill in right field—or even just traded for a first baseman, they might have won a division title with that pitching staff they had.
Anyway, I digress. The point is, and you acknowledge it, is that the Yankees aren’t going to let a 42 year old Jeter play SS while he’s hitting .245. So if he wants Rose’s record, he’d have to agree to play for the Royals, Pirates or Nationals. Tough to see Jeter doing that. He’s always said it’s all about the titles.

You're right about Jeter's performance after age 40 being the determining factor.
We’ll see how many hits he has at that age, and see how he’s still performing. He’s having a fine year this year at age 35 and will be very close to 3000 hits after the 2010 season.

First ballot HOF?
I’d give Ichiro the nod even if he doesn’t get to 3000. Which, by the way, I think he will. He is a diet and exercise freak. I think he lasts long enough to make it.
With his defensive skill I’d say he is a lock.
i would vote him twice
he is an amazing player, nothing fancy, and respects the game. Pure class.
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
