"I'm not a doctor but I once played one on TV" OT but Cubs connections.
Tomorrow marks the end of an era. Guiding Light a show probably your mother or grandmother watched leaves the airwaves after a combined 72 years on TV and radio.
Why the quote? I used to cover it for soap magazines and got to be an extra as a doctor a few times.
The Cubs connections:
1. Irna Phillips used to sit at Wrigley and write scripts in the late 30s and early 40s.
2. Characters were Cub fans as Springfield was supposed to be in the NW suburbs of Chicago unofficially. Through the years many a Cubs souveniere was seen.
3. For a few years in the 80s one of the writers was a huge Cubs fan and many 1 day characters were named after Cubs.
4. A few years ago they had a storyline where a character was a major league prospect. One of the writers at the time actually grew up with Hendry and Hendry helped with accuracy for the storyline.
I watched the show on and off for 26 years. Been DVRing it all week.
Many famous people got their starts on the show.
And it's the linchpin for a lot of 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon arguments.
How are Kevin Bacon and Hayden Pannetiere (sp) of Heroes connected?
Kevin Bacon was on Guiding Light with many people who were on when Hayden was,

Nice Post
It’s sad to see such a long-running show go off the air. I can’t imagine another scripted television show lasting 57 years, cranking out shows for 52 weeks each year without a summer break. I’ve watched on and off for about 15 years, and definately have watched the last several days. All of the episodes this week, and especially today’s final episode, were well done and a nice ending. As for the Cubs connection, “As The World Turns,” which was also created by Irna Phillips, is also set near Chicago, and features talk about the Cubs and Wrigley Field often. It might be the only show to match the 57 years of Guiding Light (it’s been on 53).
