Just thought it was interesting... No matter what you think of the DeRosa trade, I think we can all agree it'd be nice if he didn't sign an extension with St. Louis.

Ahh, Paul Sullivan

The very first sentence talks about Bradley. Glad he got it out of the way quickly.

I'll stick with Jeff Baker, thanks.

The DeRo ship has sailed. He’s done a nice job of maintaining his home run swing this season, but his OBP has plummeted rather shockingly. Still seems like a great guy, but I don’t see him as a big threat.

DeRosa has been hurt since he got to St. Louis.

He’s hit fairly well even with that.

That said, and I’m a big DeRo fan, 2009 was the year to have him in the last year of his contract here. He’ll be 35 next year. Unless he’s willing to take a two-year deal for not much more than he’s making now, I’d say let him go elsewhere.

I think that the odds of Penn beating Penn State in football

are better than the odds of DeRo re-signing with the Cubs.

I think I've made my position pretty clear...

I believe that the Cubs traded DeRo because Lou wanted him gone. (That also explains why they made no effort to get him back in mid-May when the Indians first dangled him and Ramy was on the DL.) Since it seems that Lou will be back next year, DeRo won’t be.

Right now, I’d say it’s 50-50 that DeRo is a Cardinal next year because I think they will try to sign him before other teams can talk to him.

If he makes it to the “open season”, I think he will be a Phillie next year.

The FA 3B class this year is pretty pathetic; that’s why I think the Cards will re-sign him early.

Man

Lou sure did play DeRo quite often considering he didn’t like him. I figured he’d get no playing time (like Fox, who many assume Lou doesn’t like), but I guess he begrudgingly inserted him in the lineup practically every day. Poor Lou had to go against his instincts pretty much everyday. I feel bad for the old man.

by shoemile on Sep 20, 2009 3:34 AM CDT up reply actions

I think Hendry ordered Lou to play DeRo...

Lou tried to bench DeRo for Riot in game #2 of the 2007 season. (The original lineup had Riot, but was changed.) I think that Hendry intervened. After that, Lou decided that — even if he had to play DeRo every day — he didn’t have to abide by the promise that DeRo would be the “everyday 2B”. That’s why DeRo was a nomad the last two seasons. (cf. TLR’s use of DeRo.)

Lou was willing to take Kaz Matsui (remember that?) if it meant that Hendry would trade DeRo. After the Matsui and Roberts acquisitions fell through, he had to keep him for 2008 — but maintaining his nomad status.

Lou got his wish last winter.

I dunno.

DeRo’s moving around with the Cubs was mostly due to injuries (primarily, to Soriano). WIth the Cardinals, their need was for a 3B, so that’s where he’s played most of his games.

Lou is willing to play Scales in LF,

a 2B with a rag arm. Why wasn’t he willing to play LBR, a 2B with a rag arm, in LF?

Where would he play for them?

by Al Yellon on Sep 20, 2009 8:40 AM CDT up reply actions

Pedro Feliz has a club option for 2010

I think the Phillies will pick up the option if DeRo re-signs with the Cards before FA; if DeRo is available, they will turn it down and go after DeRo. (They would prefer Feliz to someone like Crede, and they have too much money in other contracts to go after Figgins.)

The Phils wanted DeRo in 2006, but wouldn’t guarantee the third year. (They offered 2/$6.5M and ended up with the ghost of Wes Helms.) In 2007, they waited until the Brian Roberts trade fell through at the Winter Meetings before signing Feliz — they were hoping that DeRo would be available. In 2008, they offered a good pitching prospect (Happ?) for DeRo as part of the Peavy trade. They have been after him for a while.

What free agent to be is going to say he wouldn’t be open to a team?
Just more garbage by the lazy Chicago writers.

well there are some cases where an FA might but not this one

Hell as soon as Mauddux was traded in 06 he said he was open to returning to the Cubs and there is zero chance
he would but most players know enough to just pretend. I imagine DeRo is sincere but that does not make it a good move.

There will be a player who went to Cleveland last off season returning to the Cubs.

Let me be the first to predict the Cubs get Kerry Wood back. Cleveland wants to get rid of the contract and the Cubs need a closer. Cleveland might eat quite a bit and the Cubs wouldn’t have to give up much.

I had to delete my twitter account. But you can still find me at fanfiction.net under puckish prosecutor.

Carlos Marmol is our closer.

And the Indians have money troubles, so I doubt they’d eat much of anything.

Does anyone think....

… Wood could be a starter again, a la Smoltz? Granted, he doesn’t have Smoltz’s talent, but Smoltz did close for a couple years and then return to starting.

Wood has, at least, been 100% healthy this year.

by Al Yellon on Sep 19, 2009 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Seems doubtful to me.

I thought the general consensus on Kerry was that his arm/shoulder would never support him being a starter again. It’s hard to picture him throwing anywhere near 100 pitches in a game.

Would Wood even want to?

I doubt it. But who knows.

Unless...

… he could learn to retool himself as a finesse pitcher.

Here’s a real good example of a guy who did that in the 1960’s. And helped his team win a World Series in 1964.

Im not sold on marmol...

not enough control and “mental stability” to be the closer. I would be very nervous going into 2010 with marmol as the closer, especially if there isn’t a backup plan.

Don't see Wood

Cleveland isn’t going to eat much … and the Cubs probably don’t have the room right now to fit Kerry’s contract and fill other needs. Now … when Kerry’s a FA again, a couple years down the line, maybe he finishes his career here. For now … no, don’t see it, but who knows.

by toonsterwu on Sep 19, 2009 3:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I can bet the farm Kerry will be back

But not this year.

I truly believe he will sign with the Cubs in 5 years (let’s hope he’s healthy in 5) and will finish his career in Chicago.

Maybe more of a dream but I hope that can happen.

by ak123 on Sep 19, 2009 6:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, he'll be 37 in five years.

I guess he could have a couple/few years of David Weathers-esque performances in the bullpen before retiring.

I've heard stranger ideas.

Bradley played for the Indians before, so they know what they’d be getting. It might be a way to exchange contracts.

Gameboard was traded soon after.

Probably the best bet is Gameboard for Castillo, or Zito if the Giants remain desperate for offense.

Largely no

I loved DeRosa here and wans’t big on the trade when it happened (although it wasn’t bad). Thing is, if Jeff Baker isn’t the starting 2nd baseman, he’ll fill, along with Jake Fox, utility/righty bat off the bench roles. There just isn’t a huge need for DeRosa.

I’ll leave out a tiny, tiny chance if

a) DeRosa can’t find a quality deal in the market

AND

b) Baker and/or Fox are dealt away.

In that situation, there may be a tiny chance, but it’s an awfully tiny chance.

by toonsterwu on Sep 19, 2009 3:37 PM CDT reply actions

Baker does, I would think, have some trade value.

"It's hard to win 97 games, it's hard to win the division. Our attitude is if you get in every year, you get in most of the time, sooner or later you are going to knock that door down." -- Jim Hendry

by EJThunder on Sep 19, 2009 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions

sure

but dealing Baker (or Fox) doesn’t really clear money … so you would only move them if it’s for a valuable asset that can start (obviously, as a package) because otherwise they are more useful to us as backups.

by toonsterwu on Sep 19, 2009 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I doubt it

They are going to go all-out in trying to resign Holliday, which will eat up most of their funds. If they get Holliday resigned, look for them to maybe bring back DeRosa and hope the system can provide some bats (Allen Craig for example) that can be useful, akin to how Jake Fox was useful for us this year.

Even if they fail to sign Holliday … I’m not sure Bradley is the type of guy they’d go after.

by toonsterwu on Sep 19, 2009 4:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Highly doubtful.

I mean, seriously, who would they be willing to give a divisional opponent and longtime rival in return?

Jeff Baker

is a younger, cheaper version of DeRosa, with more upside.

Hendry has had a below-average year, but Baker is one of his success stories.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Sep 19, 2009 4:15 PM CDT reply actions

I like Baker, but...

… does he really have the ability to play OF like DeRosa did? And if so, why isn’t he playing left field rightfreakingnow instead of Bobby Scales?

by Al Yellon on Sep 19, 2009 8:43 PM CDT up reply actions

IIRC, DeRosa wasn't necessarily a defensive whiz in the OF

Baker certainly isn’t any worse.

More Baker in LF means, probably, more Fontenot at 2B. Maybe that’s why Baker isn’t out there.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Sep 20, 2009 12:16 PM CDT up reply actions

DeRosa could play RF and LF passably.

I’d rather see Baker in LF and Fontenot at 2B, than Baker at 2B and Scales in LF.

I could go either way with him returning.

Just as long as he doesn’t re-sign with the Deadbirds. That will kill me if he stays there. I can live with him not being a Cub, but I cannot stand that he’s a Cardinal.

You can bet your life savings on it.

Why would he or any decent MLB player come to the Cubs. Why would he wanna throw his career away when e could make more money with a much better team like the Dodgers or Phillies. Heck even the Mets.

by Ami Hasagawa on Sep 19, 2009 9:05 PM CDT up reply actions

You lost all credibility when you compared Mets to Cubs

Do some research man, that organization made themselves far more of an embarrassment in one season than the Cubs could do in the last 100 years.

Seriously, you’re disgusted with Cubs…walk down NYC and see the disgusted Mets fans right now.
