Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Not sure if this should be part of the FanPost discussion or if it does belong here...Mariotti threw up a column at FanHouse saying for this mistake, Hendry should lose his job.

I think it's unanimous that this was a poor choice on his part, but he's human. It happens - he made a mistake. Let us not forget the previous two years of success during the regular season.

Let's just rid ourselves of this cancer as best we can and move on towards re-establishing the Cubs at the top of the NL Central in 2010!

Well now I definitely think we should keep Hendry

Do you think you are creative

giving all the players names like that? Its just as bad as the Sox and Cards fans that think they are all badass with their Flubs, Scrubs, etc.

Soriano, Fukudome, Bradley…you dont like them. I get it.

How am I supposed to take anything he writes seriously after this?

I agree wholeheartedly

He’s done a horrible job this year, he put together this team and as such, he should be held ultimately accountable.

its not hendrys fault soriano was playing with a gimp knee and ramirez dislocated his shoulder

the lack of offense magnified gregg and heilmans love for giving up home runs

Not that I agree Hendry should go,

but it IS Hendry’s fault he didn’t have a bench to replace either of those guys. He also may have known (as well as Piniella may have) that Soriano wasn’t 100% and decided to keep him playing and off of the DL.

by Gurbal on Sep 22, 2009 5:34 AM CDT up reply actions

Its his fault for signing them to such exorbitant deals

that adequate replacements cant be bought or traded for and he shouldve known first hand the struggles of Heilmann and Gregg b/c theyve been in the NL for a few years now. He absolutely must be held accountable for his lousy performance; it doesnt take a genius when youve got the funds the Cubs have, but that money should be spent wisely

I've never been so mixed

Yes, he didn’t do a very good job building this team but had Soriano and Ramirez been healthy I think the team would have won the division. Yes the Cardinals are good but they only got good after making trades.

Had Soriano and Ramirez played like they should the Cubs would have been so far in the lead that the Cards wouldn’t have gone for the trades they did.

Hendry also built two teams that went to the post season. I’m only 26 so I haven’t suffered as long as many of you but I’ve really enjoyed seeing the Cubs in October with my dad even if they loss. I have no doubt in my lifetime I’ll see them win a World Series. Hopefully sooner than later.

My point is…if you’re only evaluating 2009 then Hendry might have to go even if there were circumstances out of his hands. If you’re evaluating his job based on all of his years working with the team, he deserves to keep his job one more year.

by ak123 on Sep 21, 2009 10:04 PM CDT reply actions

Huh?

“Had Ramirez played like he should?” Really? The guy’s hitting .319 after coming back if you asked me WAY too early from the injury and has managed to put up 13 HR and 59 RBI in 75 games and counting.

I just thought that was odd, is all. That’s why I pointed it out. Maybe I misread it.

by ZachenFoot on Sep 21, 2009 11:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I meant be healthy

He’s been extremely solid since he’s been back. But I meant had he been healthy. Something the team never expected.

You didn’t misread it, I just wasn’t clear. Thanks for pointing it out.

I see.

My mistake, thank YOU for clearing that up.

Also...

before anyone jumps to crazy resolutions the Cubs (and presumably Ricketts) should see what Hendry does to get out of this mess. I’m not expecting anything remotely close to Hundley for Karros and Grudz but this should be an even crazier off-season than last.

by CubFan81 on Sep 21, 2009 10:19 PM CDT reply actions

I would trade Bradley for Karros and Grudz, today.

I have zero interest in the writings of Mariotti

But Hendry is a bad GM.

I thought signing Bradley was a bad idea, but it’s not as though anyone could have predicted the mediocre playing as opposed to the massive number of games missed. So it’s not as though one can oust Hendry simply on the grounds of signing Bradley.

But. Hendry seems to have no idea how to build a team. He is very good at acquiring players, specifically players he covets. But he is prone to tunnel vision, and fails to see the move 3 moves down the road.

This is not to say that Hendry hasn’t made good moves, because he has. Ramirez, Lee, Lilly, Soriano (good but overpaid), Gorzo, Karros, Grudz, Howry, Eyre, Harden, Edmonds. All good moves.

And all GMs are to be forgiven for trades and signings that just don’t work out. Nobody can really blame Hendry for what happened with Nomar, for example. Looked good at the time, but just didn’t pan out.

But it cannot be defended when he makes moves that are so clearly dumb from the minute it occurs. A good GM wouldn’t over value Juan Pierre for one year, a good GM wouldn’t think that Marquis was worth $21 million over 3 years after coming off a really terrible year (I was fine with signing Marquis, but anything more than $15 for 3 years was just moronic). A good GM doesn’t hand the reigns of 2B to a part time role player in Fontenot, and in turn deal a cheap and productive DeRosa for 3 coin flips (at best). Miles, Gathright, Bako, all just total wastes of cash that should have been obvious before the ink was dry on the contracts.

Good GMs will make mistakes. But good GMs will rarely make moves that are so obviously terrible. It’s one thing to overpay for Zito and have him inexplicably fall off a cliff, but it’s something else entirely to give Aaron Miles a dime more than $1 million a year.

but knowing Mariotti has called for his ouster, I hope Hendry is the Cubs GM for the next 50 years.

LOL

But agreed, up to a point.

Hendry has had a really, really bad time since the 2008 season ended. He has made only three moves that helped the team in any way:

  • Making Koyie Hill the backup catcher. Argue if you like that he got too much playing time, but he has done a fine job as backup.
  • Acquiring Jeff Baker for, essentially, nothing.
  • Acquiring John Grabow and Tom Gorzelanny for, essentially, nothing.

The last two moves may pay dividends next year. Otherwise, Hendry put together a poorly constructed roster and made the worst possible free-agent signing.

I believe he should be given one more year to clean up the mess. After that, let’s re-evaluate.

by Al Yellon on Sep 22, 2009 7:19 AM CDT up reply actions

I tend to agree

Ricketts, “Jim, you have 1 year to clean up this mess of a roster. If there are financial considerations needed, then let’s discuss. But I want you to get creative and find potenital partners. No one and I mean no one is untouchable in this franchise.”

“Yes, sir,” says Hendry.

by socalbob on Sep 22, 2009 9:11 AM CDT up reply actions

I'd prefer to part ways now...

….and avoid the chance for Hendry to lock-up more bad salary on his watch. Plus, I don’t want to have to dump an additional “Hendry guy” after Hendry himself is actually gone.

But I’d sign-on to the whole “one year to get it done” idea, if for no other reason than he might be more open to trading talent to acquire talent, as opposed to sitting around and hoping for a something-for-nothing deal to present itself. If there really might be no tomorrow, maybe he’ll finally approach the season as such.

Still, given the choice, I’d like to move on in a couple of weeks.

NBF and I don't agree on much

But I continue to support Hendry.

Hendry’s percentage of good moves to bad moves is still fairly good. We celebrate (rightfully) a player with a .400 OBP. I’d say Hendry has succeed much greater than that.

Now, you can make the case that his failures have been greater than his successes. That he can snatch the low-hanging fruit with the best of them.

But I still remember the guy who got us Derrek Lee, and Aramis, and Lilly and believed in Dempster.

I used to criticize him for fleecing the Pirates, but I’ve come to realize that every team has a trading bitch. The Rays gave up Kazimir to the Angels for nothing and it infuriates Yankees and Red Sox fans.

The Royals and Indians are basically farm teams for the Yankees and Red Sox. (In the “good old” days before the rise of the union and free agency, it was like that too)

In short, his track record is still one of success. Two division titles with the biggest payroll in the division (and second in the entire NL) doesn’t earn unlimited slack, but it buys a couple more years, I’d say.

Hendry...

… I don’t think this is worth firing Hendry over. At least not yet. If the Cubs haven’t won several times, and were playing like the Pirates over the last 10 years, then sure. But Hendry has done a lot of good here… so, he is allowed to make a few mistakes. Let’s see how this ends, how Hendry gets rid of MB, and what happens this off season.

Should Hendry be fired over this? No.

by TheHawkRules on Sep 22, 2009 11:00 AM CDT reply actions

F-ing Mariotti

His job is to write interesting columns, so I guess he’s successful. But calling the Ramirez signing a mistake? Not giving Hendry credit for good signings — Lee, Lilly, even (I’ll say it) Marquis?

All that said, Hendry had a horrible offseason, and I can see why someone would call for his head. I don’t agree — yet — but I think Jimbo needs to make a mea culpa before too long.

I think HImes...

…letting Maddux and Dawson go, and making a work place so miserable that Ryno wants to retire, was a much worse situation than what Hendry has done with MB.
